UpdateGeom massive lag problems?

I've been experiencing this on and off for the last few days, and according to anecdotal reports I've shared with some, I'm not alone. I'm curious who else might be going through the "UpdateGeom lag", so if you are, please do post! :)

How it goes is like this:

I'll be travelling through any one of a given number of sims (for example, Gualala or Zermatt), and things will be fine. All of a sudden, the framerate will drop SHARPLY to 2-3 FPS. Which, of course, sucks. ;)

With Debug menu on, I quickly hit Alt-2 and notice how much the dark red color of the UpdateGeom is EATING UP the charts! Ouch. And then... when the framerate goes up, the UpdateGeom usage proportion goes down. It will seem to resolve itself if I just let time go by, but it'll likely come back again in another few min.

What makes it even more confusing is, with numerous avatars in one area, it will only affect some and not others.

I don't know more about the technical details behind this, but if anyone has info, it's appreciated in advance.

And: this has only happened to me recently with the latest version of SL, I think.

Cheerio! :D

I don't have a clue about the technical stuff you're talking about Torley, but for the past two or three days I've noticed everything will be just fine and then suddenly massive lag will hit me so hard I can't even execute commands or move. I have to relog and then everything is fine.

It's very frustrating, and like you said, it doesn't happen to everyone at the same time.

Add me to that list. The lag causes everything on my client to drop below 1 FPS. It's cyclical. It'll be fine for a few minutes, then it'll severely lag, then it'll be fine for a few more minutes. It seems to have no relation to what I'm doing at the time or to any of my settings.

same place?

Does this happen in the same places in a predictable way?

For me, no - it happens at different places, even places that have always been relatively 'lag free' for me. I haven't made any changes to my settings or done anything I can think of to make this happen.

Turn on show updates. Update Geometry sounds like someone is using a bunch of autorezzing scripts. Maybe its one of those wiseguys who think they're very clever and build entire malls out of temp-on-rez prims.

Y0 Uncle, wazzup... it doesn't happen in the same places for me. It has happened in the Welcome Area too, where scripts aren't allowed, so that struck me as quite odd. I must clarify it has happened in some of the very empty, new sims, as well as very crowded ones where it's less noticeable, but the UpdateGeom stuff comes up nonetheless so I assume that it's being caused by a similar or the same thing.

One place I know it hit me for SURE was during Jeska's Punk Rock Ice Skating Party. Some other people -- not everyone, just seemed like a few -- were hit by it too. Philip recommended I check out things in detail, and if my memory's not mistaken, he was being affected by the same adverse conditions.

Hopefully we can reproduce this again and again -- well, it seems to be the case, anyway.

Developing . . . :)

it's been happening anywhere anytime for me. i've not perceived a pattern yet. i can even be in a place with very few builds and no scripts to speak of.

Thanks!

You're most graciously welcome.

Hope you Lindens nail this sucker and pound the lag outta it.* :)

Noticed a problem for the last 24 hours or so, mostly OK, but out of the blue, heavy lag hits with no rhyme or reason, I find everything just chugs, stop-start as if rendering is saturating about every second. Relog gets rid of it OK though. Usual delays on updating appearance from asset server persist. Sorry don't have any facts and figures, just a 'me too'. Noticed it in Dacia, Lusk and Fairytale Island today.

Help us debug
12-30-2004 13:44
Hi all,

We could use some additional data regarding this issue. If anyone notices this slowdown, please activate the debug menu (Ctl-Alt-D) and hit Alt-9, which should bring up a different set of timing bars which breaks things down a little differently. I need to know which color bars are largest during the slowdown. (You can Ctl-click on the graph to change the display from 'centered' to 'ordered' which will make it easier to tell which colored bars are largest). One or two should be obviously larger. Match the color to the label and post the results. Or post a screenshot.

Thanks, any input will be helpful!

I also notice this myself. It's very bad and is linked to the same principle that the UpdateGeometry takes up a huge slice of CPU time, much to the effect that goes overkill. Another thing I've observed that doesn't seem to connect with the situation, but also seems to complain, is that in the ALT+4 debug message log how, "Mixing AGP and non-AGP pools, slow!" comes up when this frame stuttering occurs. I have some system specs below.

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
ABIT KV8-MAX 3 v1.2 motherboard
1 GB Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR 400
eVGA GeForce 6800 Ultra AGP 8X
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Western Digital 120 GB 7200 RPM 8MB cache EIDE
3 Mbps/256 Kbps cable connection

In my experience, its curly prim hair.. I know some people with hair that is a ton of toruses.. Sure the hair looks nice and all, but my client *stops* for a second everytime the hair comes into view.. I've taken to asking people to take it off and telling them why.

So please... avoid the torus hair :(

Steve,

Next time it happens to me (which probably won't be long) I'll try the alt-9 trick.

I've noticed it...

Watching the Alt-2 debug which is similar to the Alt-9, I notice framerate drops down to 2 fps when UpdateGeom jumps from it's normal 5% to ~ 35%, it seems to be fighting RenderGeom, which normally runs 40-50%, for resources. I'll see if I can't get some screenshots in the next few days, although normally it takes me 5x as long to do anything while under the framerate drop.

Update: I have noticed, fewer framerate drops when turning off tree rendering Alt-Shift-3. I don't know if this is yet linked to the wind speed and having to update all the trees rendered around me but I've found I only slow down to 5-7 fps when UpdateGeom is higher. Perhaps an idea but one I thought I should post at any rate. I'll see if I can watch the Windspeed information as well as the trees when I slow down next time.

You want Alt-9 proof that the culprit is Geo Update. I have it. Here's the information!

WOOHOO five seconds per frame!
01-03-2005 03:36
Man oh man.

I locked my screen for about seven minutes, came back. It's been pegged like this for about five minutes now. I'm killing it.

i experiment the same kind of shit, fps drop to less than 1 fps, its most likely unplayable and is cyclic , happend very often at my place

but i have nothing able to do this in my scripts

I notice all you posting nice images...
01-03-2005 21:23
But you all should have Alt-1 up as well displaying the decrease in FPS. I now have several images collected, this is not related to wind velocity, but Alt-Shift 3 seems to boost the FPS a little bit. I can go from 90 FPS down to 4 FPS when my client is doing Geo Updates. To me that seems a bit far fetched but I tell you it is all true. Not having the trees to render increases framerate only when there are a bunch of trees to render.

turn off local lighting, way way WAY WAY WAY too many things in SL are now set light, and it does not play well with 'dynamics' such as avatars, which have to have lighting recalculated by the cpu every single frame.
