Call it what it is. Attack occured about five minues ago. How do I know? I was suddenly bombarded with objects, so fast it was rediculous, which I reported as a bug, because you cannot report "Unknown" as an abuse report. Thurnberg. There I was, quietly crafting away, and suddenly hundreds of objects, all screaming Death from above malarky started falling on my head.
You guys need to limit the propogation rate, first move, period. This would not happen if auto propogation was limited. I was SPAMMED with objects, god knows what my inventory looks like now. When I tried to log back in, message said, Login Failed.
I was working on a primo project. I am rather upset, the creativity was flowing. Linden Labs needs to address this issue, and address it QUICKLY. It will destroy any trust the residents have. Now, I am without SL, the creative spurt is interrupted, and I do not know if what I will eventually build will be what I had in mind when I started.
If you do not solve this problem, and solve it quickly, it WILL destroy the profitability of your endeavor. Second Life CAN NOT be a Hacker's Paradise. Find these people, and ban them permanantly. Sue them for economic damages, they are for sure damaging the economics of those who rely on the game for RL income.
GET RID OF THEM.
Make SL SAFE for the serious resident!
And do it quickly.

Though I have no solid basis for saying so, it appears to me that this attack has been in "distribution" phase for hours. The sims that I visit regularly that are typically rock-solid have *all* been intermittenty "hiccupping" for hours. I certainly hope in some ways that I am right, because that might indicate that if LL chose to they could implement an "early warning" system.

A warning system

Would be a definite improvement. I think limiting auto-propogation is a very good way to go too. It would at least slow them down, and allow more accurate reporting.

There already ARE limits on auto-propagation, as I know; I ran into them recently when I was trying to develop a scripted item. (And no, it wasn't broken, and it didn't propagate objects infinitely, just faster than the gray goo fence liked. It was a message board with a resize command.) But it looks like this particular script kiddie found a way to work around them.

Yes because SL purposefully let people spam us.. thats why they dont clean it up or shut sl down or ever update it... oh wait..
its a big community, it continues to grow, there will always be ways to harrass other users, as sl shut down more things other ways will occur, things have to go wrong in order to progress, get over it. if you dont like people being able to harrass you then stay in your home, lock your doors and cut off your internet and phone.

The easiest way is to make SL exclusively payment info required. So that every user can be tracked. This will take care of an enormous amount of the problems with SL. And it will close the biggest hole that people like this exploit to perpetrate these attacks.

I run 3 stores own group land, have been playing for under two months and have become quite successful, however IRL I dont have credit cards (I hate them) so its okay to limit me out of the game and LOTS of others which would cut the population to CRAP and would bring the economy to CRAP all because some scripter wants to haev his fun... BAD IDEA

It isn't a bad idea at all. NC Soft does so with City Of Heroes/City Of Villains. They require that info to be on file to even use their trials. And the griefing in those games is unheard of. So this tactic does work.
As for your hatred of credit cards... Well there are alternatives to using them. Blank transfer, for example. LL and Paypal offer unlimited options in that area.

And do it quickly. ..And if it was not enough for all of these script-kiddies making their BS, LL seems to be incapable of scaling their system, namely the asset servers to work properly when the grid has 10K+ residents online at one time... Last night, I was working on a very intricate build and had been for a good part of the day.. I nearly had a heart attack when I rezzed a copy of one the most complicated parts, and several of the VERY laboriously textured/linked assemblies were missing... I posted on the forum, and it was suggested that I clear cache/uninstall/reinstall the client.. Having done that countless times before, I suspected that this anomoly was a bogged down asset server.. I got up early for work, and checked my build again, and guess what? Everything was back... It WAS a bogged down asset server... If LL would spend as much time increasing the member servers in their asset server cluster as they do in thanking us for our patience, and causing more problems than they fix with their biweekly "upgrades" that are advertised as 5 hrs long but as often as not, wind up keeping the grid down for up to 15 hrs.. I love SL, and if truth be told, I'm more than likely addicted to it, in a heroin/cocaine type of addiction, but having said that, I'm getting close to the point where I ditch the premium membership and sell my land and de-tier, and drop back to basic... And I KNOW I'm not the only one thinking this.... <rant off> Tas

Here is the problem... some Arse makes an alt... offers freeby items to a noob... the noob rezzes the items not knowing what thier doing... owner becomes the unsuspecting rezzer of the attack...
Isn't it time to force people to register again... I am sure all the work LL has unfortunatly had to do since this open registration is not worth the new residents... I as a resident know its not worth the risks and ease of attacks that I have had to pay to witness as a land owner and supporter of SL. Nor is it worth it to me every time I cant log in due to these attacks

It's not the unlimited signups that are the problem, it's the ability for them to execute DoS scripts. They would think twice about it if LL could track them down via payment info.

It saddens me that I think LL will do nothing about this. To them this is a minor inconvenience to having open accounts. Clearly to the SL community who can't get in for hours or days, it's devastating. How many attacks have we had so far and nothing has really been done (on the surface or otherwise) to stop them from occuring again? In one sense I feel sorry for the staff at LL having to put up with this, but on the other hand, they're doing this to themselves.
They think open registration is their salvation, but clearly they have been and still are totally naive to the fact that people are using unverified alts to destroy SL slowly, one attack at a time.

Just curious

Has anyone in LL ever responded on the forums to these kinds of suggestions?
The idea of continuous free 'alt' creation specifically to attack, harrass and generally disrupt the game certainly merits not only attention and response, but action.
Having a forum that offers no interaction with the powers that be sorta stinks. Is it strictly a blog thing now with LL?
Not looking to cause an argument, I'm trying to get a feel for how things were/are now with about 2 months under my belt.

The growth in the financial sector isn't due to the unvarified. It is due to those working hard and producing when the grid is actually available. Those users who have taken the time and invested the time and money nesessary tro cause this economic expansion.
The unvarified just take. They exist off the effort of the others making the economy of the grid progress.
The downtime that griefers like this creates steals money out of the pockets of the merchants and the users. It causes the entire system to stop dead. If they were not around, the system would be open more and the economy would be in even better shape than those figures show.

Lets hope LLabs does doing somthing about this issue. Can`t they bring back the 9.95 account trails and by the time the trail is over they can get some sort of payment thingy.......As many great cities around the world grows better ( china for one) the more and more problem it and we are having. We nee laws and order now..... And having Mia linden scream at us not to call onthe Live hHelp channel really shows you where their concerns are for those of us inthe game......

From: Argent Stonecutter This begs the question of why in earth you have so little imagination to think that the only options are free logins or a "drab economy". It's the same mentality that enables and allows the griefer scum to continue their behaviour without opposition. It's the belief that just rolling over for the griefers and letting them do their carnage is the acceptable way to deal with things. When it is anything but.
