I have 1500 mb of ram, more than enough to run SL and other programs, Pentium 4 with HT. Like I said this isnt my problem.

i have
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 650 Desktop Processor w/ HT Technology 3.4GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB

Motherboard: Intel® 915P PCI-Express Chipset
Video/Graphics Card: 256MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go 6800 Ultra
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 1024MB

and i have experienced no problems
and my other machine with half the memory and half the processor with a geforce fx 5700 has no problems and i run every thing your do talk on skype and have photo shop running all at the same time with out any problems.

maybe I'm lucky

If you want to multitask with SL you need to get yourself a hyperthreaded processor or a dual core since SL will use up 100% of your CPU.

Ehh... thats not always true Striker. I have an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (1.92ghz 32bit) with 1 gig of ram and I run SL + Trillian + SAM3 + TeamSpeak + FireFox (as many as 3 windows) + BitComet + WASTE and suffer no problems with SL.

I have yet to see a common hardware related issue with the ones who are having trouble. It might help if the ones having problems could post more specific info on their system configurations.

My slowest machine, a 1ghz P3 with 512mb RAM and a PCI GeForce 4MX can handle 1.10 without crashing. I do admit that SL looks like crap on that machine, but it is stable, and I can run with shiny on.

Never said it would cause a problem, I remember someone with a FX-57 posting multitasking slowness earlier this week. Which is why I added on my 2nd sentence for those who have a single core / not HT and can still multitask with minimum CPU usage from SL. "Some ways to make it easier is to lower the priority of secondlife.exe in your task manager and minimize the game, not just change to a different window."

These are very similar to the problems I developed about a month ago, my hard drives on its last legs. I would think thats whats most likely.

By the way, I just finished a complete replacement of ALL my Windows components (i.e. booted from the disk, install, repair) and guess what?
Several of my programs are still busted. Trillian refuses to run with the same crash error.
I'm now off to do a check of my disc drive to see if it is corrupted. I do not think it is.
[EDIT]
Based on the results of the various tests, a Dell technitian concluded that my hard drive is on the verge of failing, that the error is intermittenet and that a complete reinstall of Windows, a system restore, etc. will probably only make the problem go away for a short while.

Lexie: Your Intel Extreme graphics card is still showing up on the crash logs. This onboard graphics card should be disabled in the Windows Device Manager as well as the computer's startup BIOS.

Out of all cards that meet our Minimum System Requirements, we hear the most complaints by far about the Radeon 9250, both for performance and crashes. The best recommendation I can make is to make sure all drivers are updated (especially motherboard, and other components), and disable as many SL graphics settings as possible.
