I'm using a Mac Mini w/512MB RAM, the absolute wimpiest Mac on the market, and 1.7.1's noticeably faster than 1.6 was. I only get 5-8 fps, but I don't have horrible multi-second lurches anymore and I can almost move smoothly. Dancing is no longer a strobe-light effect.
Were it not for the client crashing about 10% of the time when I edit textures, I'd be completely satisfied with the upgrade.
So, my advice: sell your PC for scrap metal, and buy the best Mac you can afford instead, since they actually seem to work with SL (but don't take one with 512MB RAM! It's just not enough on a Mac!).

1.7.1 = no difference

Since the 1.7 update came out, including the new 1.7.1 I went from 20-30fps to 3-8fps. I have a 7800GTX, costed $450
AMD 64 Socket 939 3500+ OC to 3800+ speed MSI Geforce 7800GTX 256MB OC to 480/1300 2GB Corsair PC3200 ram running in dual channel CAS 2.5 Soundblaser X-FI Xtreme Music 460 Watt Enermax Power Supply, 33A on 12V Rail Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA MSI Neo 4 Platinum (nForce 4 Chipset) SLI
I had to take off local lighting to get the same speeds I used to get with 1.6. I am not sure what they have changed to cause such a severe lag but well done SL, you make this game run like my FX5600 in my laptop.

I have an Intel Dual-Core processor, FX6600 256mb PCIx card, 1 gig ram. (translated: puter rocks). My system is also very clean. SL is buggy. It lags on a pattern basis, such lag attributable (from what I can make of readings) from server-side image handling. This is expected; LL has admitted they're having texture/image problems and are working to get this corrected. I can live with that. We knew 1.7 would bring its own bugs; system is too complex to expect otherwise. Any time LL levels with its customers and admits system problems, that lets me sit back and be patient. I don't ask for perfection... just honesty.
