During the deploy of 1.5.6 we moved one of our frontend servers around to give it more CPU cycles. Specifically, userserver.agni.lindenlab.com is moving from 66.150.244.192 to 69.25.104.148, and this required a domain name service (DNS) change.
This should not be a problem for most people, however some Microsoft operating systems have been known to cache DNS records beyond their designated time to live (TTL).
When SL is back up... if your SL client stops at "Contacting userserver", and you are using a variety of Microsoft Windows OS then you may be suffering from the above problem. To verify this you ;scan open up a command-line shell and execute the following command:
ping userserver.agni.lindenlab.com
If you get the old address then you will need to clear your DNS cache -- that is, you need to reboot.

Willow, if you are in Windows XP go to control panel and network connections. Right click on your connection icon and select repair. This will force a flush of the cache and renewal of DNS protocols. It wouldn't hurt to flush the cache folder either.

and you emptied the cache folder under documents and settings/owners documents/application data/secondlife/cache(sp) it is normally in hidden mode and you have to turn on view hidden files to see it.

Willow--
I'm sorry you are frustrated. Can you post the output of a ping to userserver.agni.lindenlab.com from your computer? That might help determine what the problem is.

Okay, so it looks like you are getting to the correct server. Next step: please post your secondlife.log.

Shouldn't the client detect this and ask us to reboot?

Jack;
there is no way for the client to detect this case; it can only guess, and most of the time it would be wrong.
