Extremely low FPS in 1.8?

Pretty sure this is a bug in our code. Be sure to submit bug reports and include screen shots of that ctrl-shift-9 debug window. It does look like it is something in the networking portion of the code. Because Second Life is a single threaded app, if any 1 portion of the code takes a long time it can cause slow frame rates.

Hi Keiki!

Sorry you're having problems, but I just noticed you're running on a Pentium Pro processor...we require at least a Pentium III processor. It's no wonder why you're having performance issues...your laptop is just not powerful enough.

*sigh* where are you getting this info? I'm not running a processor from 1995. I'm running a 1.6 gHz Intel Pentium III M Processor, not pentium pro and I have 1.5 gb of RAM. The system is plenty robust enough to use SL and was running just fine last night.

Lindens Hear Me - Bring Back Keiki!!!!
12-14-2005 04:59
Here it is in plain English

SL ran fine before 1.8
SL ran bad in 1.8 Preview, but good in 1.7 grid
SL broken in 1.8
No SL for Keiki

To help you along, here is what the problem is not

NOT Keiki's computer's fault
NOT Keiki running a weird script
NOT Keiki's fault

Please find the bug and bring Keiki (and others who are having same trouble) back to SL

If you do not bring Keiki back, i will kick and scream and cry and throw things in welcome area.

WAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!

Keiki is not a bug!!
12-14-2005 06:27
I know Keiki and her computer is far from inadequate...and I know a Linden didn't knock on her door to check this computer out so let's not assume someone is on some outdated pc and rather SEE that there is yet another bug which needs to be addressed.

I need Keiki!! Bring back the Keikster!! :) and the number of others suffering this same issue. PLEASE!!!!!!

Im guessing they are getting it from the bug report, maybe the processor is being detected wrong and thats part of the bug, click help > about seconflife

You will see something like this
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ (2247 Mhz)
Memory: 1024 MB

I was a bit dubious wondering how a crappy old pentium pro was giving you 25fps on an ati 9000, if you see what above is wrong then reply to your bug report with a screenshot saying your cpu is being detected wrong and include a screenshot of the windows control panel > system window which shows the cpu/ram etc

Now here is an interesting piece of the puzzle: the client is indeed mis recognizing my graphics card. I do not know if this is new or not. In any case, when I check through my control panel or using dxdiag, it's very clear that I'm using a Mobility Radeon 9000, but if I go to about Second Life I see this:

Second Life 1.8.0 (6) Dec 12 2005 17:08:14

You are at 263189.1, 252083.6, 144.3 in No located at (72.5.12.12:12035)

CPU: 0.13 micron Intel Pentium III mobile (598 Mhz)
Memory: 1536 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
OpenGL Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL Renderer: FireMV 2400 PCI DDR x86/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 1.3.1030 WinXP Release
Packets Lost: 0/2090 (0.0%)
Viewer Digest: 089d1612-caea-efad-6750-96e9faaf16a5

Notice that the OpenGL Renderer is showing a different card than what I have. I don't know if this is relavent. Notice also, I'm using a pentium III mobile.

You might want to try uninstalling all ati drivers, then using this driver cleaner utility from www.drivercleaner.net, restarting and then installing the drivers from www.omegadrivers.net

Not sure how to uninstall drivers and don't feel good about removing them completely. I think I'm done with this until someone can give me a more definitive answer or the next update comes out.

Hope to see you soon everyone.

I also had the same lag trouble yesterday early morning on the preview grid, later in the day though it was fine (also after a viewer update). I suspect that the problem was fixed. Do you have problems on the main grid now that 1.8 has been deployed? If you still do, I suggest uninstaling SL, and the SL Preview. Restart your system, then reinstall, and see if you still have the problem

Yes, the problem is also on the main grid. I have uninstalled the SL and the preview and reinstalled. The problem is still there.

Water ripples
12-14-2005 11:43
I think clouds should be off by default too. Or the client should be able to remember all the things that someone does not want to be rendered. Who asked for water ripples? Is it something that many people craved for, or is it one of the things that one programmer on the team "thought" would be easy to do it and just did it.

Water rippples used to be available, but were incompatible with nvidias and looked abit nasty, from what the developer said he had been bug fixing for three weeks and finished that project and spent a couple of days implementing waves as some stress relief, and im glad he did, even the developers need a break sometimes to work on a little pet project or it all soon gets boring and monontenous

I love water ripples, they don't seem to effect my FPS (although I think my FPS problems BEFORE 1.8 were due to lack of ram). I've had an FPS improvement since 1.8 and I've had water ripples on nearly all the time..

Ah, I wondered if I was the only one getting this massive dip in performance with 1.8. I checked the game and eventually discovered that the game was reading my graphics card correctly.

Either the graphics card-thing isn't the problem, or I've got a whole different one.

Lol. Hey LL, I figured out the problem, I just realized all your servers are commodore 64s. True? Who cares! Its easier than actually figuring out the issue.

Hmm, ctrl-shift 9 appears to do nothing... I don't know if it was somehow doing it wrong, but I just got nothing.

On the surface of it, however, the problem seems the same, worked fine up untill 1.8 and then ground to a halt.

I eagerly await reports/developments, thanks. :)

Enable De-Bug by hitting contrl-alt-D, then do the cntrl-shift-9.

It's fixed?
12-16-2005 09:03
For the first time since 1.8 went live, I'm in and my FPS is in the high teens. I have no idea what fixed it, since nothing is different from last night when it didn't work. A fix on your end? I'll let you know if stops working again.

And if a fix got slipped in, TY!

:) Welcome back...

Incorrect CPU core ID is old news. My previous CPU was a Celeron 0.13 micron (which is the Tualatin core), that was always detected as a Pentium Xeon 0.18 micron (which is the older Coppermine core). Likewise, my current CPU is a PIII-S 0.13 micron (Tualatin), which is incorrectly detected as a PIII 0.18 micron (Coppermine).

None of that has ever had any impact on performance. Back in Previews of earlier versions prior to the 45fps cap, I was able to acheive fps as high as 150+ with all rendering disabled. In both 1.7 and 1.8 I could hit the max 45fps. My internet connection is full-speed T1.

I notice that your OpenGL Version is detected as 1.3.1030 WinXP Release. On my GeForce FX 5500 with the latest Forceware driver, the OpenGL version is 2.0.1. But fps with all rendering turned off probably wouldn't be affected by any video card or driver issues.

Sounds like your bandwidth was being throttled; which was a problem I had briefly about a year ago in an early Preview release. It limited me to about 4fps max. The throttling shows up in Debug (at least it did back then). I reported it and the problem was gone in the next release. Don't know what caused it or what fixed it.

Not there yet Kaz, it's still the ol' DEC PDP-1 boxes...the Commodores are on backorder.
