Extremely low FPS in 1.8?

Logged on to take a look at the preview, and my FPS was extremely low. I checked all my settings and poked around debug. Every other measure I could find looked good/normal, but my FPS was between 0.7 and 2.5 or so. I logged out, went back to the main grid and my frame rate was back to normal (15-25fps). Any idea what this might be? Is this a bad omen for tomorrow?

Hmmm, I just dived back in, heart pounding, in case...

For my setup 1.8 is pretty much as it was before. Similar fps to main grid 1.7.
Which is worrying, as it's on that tiny uninhabited grid at present.
Last time 1.7P was actually faster than 1.6 - until it got on the main grid when, amongst other issues, it virtually developed negative fps.

Oh well, I suppose we'll know tomorrow...

Meantime, dunno why you are getting the hit you report, as I say, I'm getting the same as on 1.8P announced day.

Do you have ripple water turned on?
12-12-2005 11:20
Ripple Water seriously lowers FPS. For that reason, it is off by default. Can you please verify that you are not using ripple water?

Ripple water is off.

All options except full terrain detail is off under graphics.

Here is a screen shot of my troubles. Going to play around with debug menu to see if I find a way to get a better FPS.

I turned off everything under Debug > Rendering > Types... everything. I'm looking at a black screen and getting 2.7 FPS.

What is the make and model of the video card and general system specs?

Have you updated your drivers lately, which drivers are you using?

1.5 gb RAM.

And like I said 15-25fps in 1.7 on the main grid.

Take a pic of the frame console, its usually handy for weird slowdown.

Double checked video driver and updated it. Same problem in 1.8. Performance in 1.7 is fine, and I'm getting 2fps in 1.8. Do I have to wait until this is live to get customer support on this?

If it helps any, I logged into the preview too - same issue. I run dual nvidia 7800s, 3.8, 4 gigs of ram. I won't get into technical talk but I work on games for a living, way higher end (next gen)than SL, and everything is lightning fast (I also play them) In this preivew I had poor framerates. Maybe some optimization on their end.

I had one other friend who reported the same problem. I really hope this isn't widespread.

keiki could you take a grab of the frame console, also what version of the catalysts are you using, also have you tried the drivers from www.omegadrivers.net they are usually very much upto date ati drivers which can be used on most laptops

In about secondlife
OpenGL version should be 2.0.5469 WinXP release (for ati cards)

or 2.0.1 for nvidia cards using the latest 81.95 drivers

I pulled the most up to date drivers, directly from Dell (release date 12/5/05). One really important thing here is that I turned off ALL rendering and had the same frame rate. I don't think this has much to do with 3D rendering.

Now, is the console, shift-cntl-2 in the debug menu? I got nothing but red lines across my screen.

Where do I check my version of OpenGL? And where can get updated drivers for it if needed?

Manufacturers may not be uptodate especially on older laptops, but as far as the red lines, if you press ctrl-shift-9 do you see a blue bars, and a high reserve number?

I am getting 1.0 fps. Downloading the Omega Drivers.

Here is what I see when I press CNTL_SHFT-9:

By the way, Nathan, thank you so much for offering some help. I really appreciate it.

Again I turned off all rending types under debug. FPS under 2.0.

If any Lindens see this, can you make sure that the developers see this? I feel strongly that this is a new bug.

I have filed bug reports and a support request as well.

Support's answer was Firewall. It's not the firewall.

I really wish I could say I'm surprised.

Next it'll be "must be user content."

Well I agree with Nathan it definately looks like something related to networking which causes the slowdown but unfortunately the WHY is going to be a big mystery.

Things to experiment with:
Messing with the ingame bandwidth setting.
Updating motherboard firmware and/or network card drivers.
