I don't think co-location is refuring to redundency. A co-location normally refrences a non company owned data center that would have or maintain multiple companies internet data services. Often times these are class 3 or class 4 PSTN's . I do not think linden uses a PSTN data center because of the issues they contiinually seem to have with outages. For example a poweroutage would have no effect whats so ever on a PSTN data center since everyhting is ups on top of generater backup.
I imagine they are using a mah and pah datacenter that is inexpensive. Likely a local ISP. That it would be a logical reason why it is effected so often by outside influances to the network and power outages.

From: Cruise Swain Oh please, downtime happens.. stop crying about it. Its not very regurlar, usually its planned.. now it isnt.. its not their fault a colocation fails. Of course it is. It's called a redundant network connection. Stick around a while. It happens quite often.

From: Ketra Saarinen This is the first time in a very long time that I haven't been able to log into SL when I want to. I really don't see what everyone's problem is.. As it is, this was out of their hands. STUFF happens; moron excavators don't call DigSafe and backhoe a line, a community gets hit with a heatwave and everyone uses their A/C blowing out the local power grid, etc.. It's frustrating how people will whine and cry "JUST FIX IT" having no clue what happened or how it might get fixed in the first place.
As for reimbursement.. Do the math before you start making stupid claims. If you have a Premium account you get maybe 30 cents or so for an ENTIRE DAY of downtime. If you own a sim, it's closer to $6.50 for that FULL 24 hours. You want compensation, go dig in your couch or under your driver's seat. Remember it was YOUR decision to invest in a Pioneer Venture, noone else's. Where's YOUR redundancy? Um, I went to have a banana instead. Good source of potassium

OMG - a fix?

From: Zuleika Deere OK, not being able to login is no fun at all. But many people had serious problems because of connectivity issues. They could not log in at all, had huge package loss, or even worse became ghost avatars.]
Yep - downtime is frustrating and annoying. I have been having the WORST problems for days (see Thread: Weird behaviour with a sim). First Support Ticket sent in got the auto reply "Try logging into Different Region" O.o, Gee Thanks Hadn't thought of THAT one; Second Support Ticket sent in got the auto reply "Is your broadband capped?". Er.....No. And it suddenly hasn't become capped in the last few days......
So, after being unable to log in effectively for FOUR DAYS I am relieved to see that the Lindens are working on a connectivity problem.

From: Cruise Swain No, The entire grid is NOT down. In fact.. people are still on the grid right now.. The only thing thats been taken down is the login. Actually, me and 17 of my friends in different parts of the world all crashed out at the same time and still have yet to get back on. (if the grid didnt go down, why the sudden crash) Good thing simple servers like Skype dont have this problem, or i wouldn't even be able to talk to them. Anyway... "second" life as usual.

and no, "co-location" does not mean "redundant servers". SL openly says they do not use redudent servers as yet. Why I dont know. Any entity with a fraction of this load should be on a redundent system. Hell, Steve Case took AOL redundent while he was still opperating in his parents carport. Simple actually.
