Hello,I just downloaded this game not to long ago, anxious to play it,i started it up right when i got it obviously, and it said i had to update my driver,so I naturally wen't to the nvidia site (I have a Nvidia Geforce 2) and downloaded the latest driver,I wen' to install this driver but,to my dismay,it said I didn't have the compatible hardware, now I'm positive I have a Geforce 2,I think the problem is is that my driver is way to out of date to get a upgrade for it,unless someone knows how I can get a new driver for my current version, thus enabling me to play.Thanks-Hayden

Hiya Chezafein!
You may need to use a previous version of the drivers... see here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html See Products Supported to see why this is. Hope you can get inworld. _____________________

Im not sure what you mean by bypass, after all I'm not much of a computer whiz. O, bypass, just... get past the error message. Because in that thread I linked to, seems like that error has YES or NO as choices. Does it allow you to continue on at all, or does it force you to quit? Another thing you can do... start up SL and then click the ABOUT button. It'll show your graphics card next to where it says OPENGL RENDERER--is it reported correctly there? _____________________

Ack.
I dunno why it'd say that if you have a supported graphics card. So what did it say next to OPENGL RENDERER as I asked earlier? It should show the actual graphics card you have. ![]() _____________________

Do this:
Open Second Life. On the opening screen with the big eye-in-hand icon, look near for the button that says PREFERENCES. It's near the CONNECT button. Click that. Then, look for the button that says ABOUT. Click on that and look for OPENGL RENDERER. _____________________

O, I'm sowwie, I didn't know you couldn't even get to the splash screen. I'd recommend doing some SL Forums searches to see if anyone else knows a way to fix this--or maybe someone will reply in here--and you might want to contact support@secondlife.com to ask for official help.
Realistically though, that graphics card will do awfully with SL. I can't personally recommend it. Best of hope! ![]() _____________________

New To SL... Same Exact Problem
01-07-2006 16:36
Thanks so much for posting, Chezafein.
I've just spent the last few hours trying to launch Second Life for my very first time. I'm receiving the exact same messages you are. I have an older, but still good, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. I ran all the necessary tests, & all test results say everything's up to date. When I answer with the 'Yes' option, to try & run SL anyway, I also get the pop-up saying 'Sorry...out of date or unsupported...etc'. Then, the SL launcher just quits... nada, nothing... back to desktop. I'm curious as to why the SL launcher can't tell that we're using correct & currently up-to-date NVidia series video cards, etc. I was going to e-mail tech support, as suggested; but I've been reading a lot of other posts saying that there's no replies coming from Tech Support, either. I guess I'll go ahead & cancel my account for now; & head back to other realms that have no trouble launching. Best of Luck to You, Chezafein, & to everyone else going through this. ~ Z ![]() |

There are some good reasons you are seeing similar error messages because they are basically the same card. THe GF2 MX 400 and the GF4 MX 420 are almost identical cards with near identical specs. The GF4 cards have more memory and a few tweaks to allow it to perform marginally better. The problem is these are both the bottom of the barrel as far as SL is concerned and why they say they still support them is beyond me. Even when they do work the performance is in the sub 5fps range a lot of the time.
When dealing with SL and these older cards is they are usually on older machines that aren't really up to date as far as drivers are concerned. So, to get them to work, you gotta update all the drivers on your machine. That means the motherboard, bios, the sound card, video card, DirectX; basically anything with a driver needs to have the latest (or the latest that works). Once everything is updated, remove SL and reload it off the website so it sees the newer versions of the drivers. _____________________

Thanks for Explaining,I Will Be Back, Someday.
01-08-2006 11:47
Cheers Kathmandu,
Thanks for taking the time to explain about the the GF 2's & 4's series ~ ~ much appreciated. While I now understand just how slow SL would probably work because of the low end GeForce, I must admit I'd still like to come & explore Second Life. The rest of my comp isn't that 'old', performance-wise: Pentium 4~3GHz~512MB RAM~80GB~seperate DVD R/RW & CD R/RW~WinXP w/SP2. All Drivers are up tp date. I'm able to play other high-end mmogs that also demand much, & I use it for professional music apps & some video, too. Ah well, I'll be back when I get a comp that wants to come along & explore Second Life with me. In the meantime, the Forums are fun so I'll stick with that for now. Thanks again, to All who offered help & suggestions. ~ Zyanu _____________________

you may want to go into preferences from the splash screen and check in the General Tab and check where it says......... Auto-detect graphics hardware on next startup
