I think it goes without saying that for some people this will be the last straw.

What's worse are the new people trying to log in for the very first time who, upon dealing with all the frustration of just logging in, give up altogether and uninstall SL completely, never to return. :(

Well, it IS embarrassing for LL. My company, when we produce software we do this thing called testing. Regression, usability, acceptance....and wouldn't you know....our software works!

Might help you clowns over here.

I was borderline about to cancel my account this evening, just because of the fact that it took me 45 minutes to log in. Bear with me, I'm a patient person, but this was quite frustrating and if not for my friends that I have here, I would've given up. I'll keep my fingers crossed that these issues can be resolved, whatever they may be.

If I do leave -- and I may if they can't pull things together soon -- I'll make sure the people I want to stay connected to have my email address before I go.

If these problems are serious enough for you to consider scaling back, please consider letting LL know in this thread that has be ongoing since 1/5/2005.

Yes, LL might loose customers ... like Sean said, its especially frustrating to newbies. Who might not come back after their first tries.

But, please, fellow residents, let's be reasonable: SL is a system which has been in a kind of constant 'beta' since its birth. And no matter what fans of other 3D platforms (whith 'better' graphics) might say, SL is really cutting edge. We are all (mostly) early adopters and most of us are willing to bear with the problems. Why? Because there is no real alternative. At least the systems I checked aren't ;)

And I think with the current speed of development going on, it will NOT become not much more stable. Thats one of the reasons LL is NOT making a huge marketing campaign to get more users into the system. They want to perfect SL first. And if I look at whats already been planned for future releases, I dont expect SL to mature to an acceptable stability much earlier than middle of next year. Around version 2.1 maybe,

After that point, problems like that in the last few nights won't happen as much as today. But development will slow down, too.

We are guinea pigs, lets face it! And I still think it's fun (nearly) every day.

Assuming that I can log on again at some point in this century. I have to sell my land first so I can get my money back for it. Then i'm outta this sorry excuse for a MMORPG. This is by far the worst I have ever seen log in problems. I played games like UO and Lineage 2 and NWN for years and they never once had problems like this. Somebody needs to figure out whats wrong or a lot of people will be high tailing it just like I am and soon.

When I first joined it was great. I guess that's why I'm waiting till Tuesday... I'd love to see SL fully functional again. Like everyone else here, I sure hope they can pull it together.

None of you will leave, i would bet on it. 99.9% of you will still be here even if it takes a month. You spend outragiouse amounts of money to play this game and spend countless hours on it so logging on to this game becomes second nature. Lindens know this and thats why they can get away with treating you like shit and thats why most liason's in game dont do their job.

some are ok, Jack Linden was cool...thats it though

Hell, SL could go down for weeks, would I remain? Of course, there's nothing else like SL

I just joined last week and upgraded to a premium account, bought land, a house, and some clothing and this is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth. I will hesitate to continue playing SL if this is how they address a login issue. Its not that you don't expect a problem but saying it will be fixed Tuesday? WTF take the servers down and fix it immediately...back out any other changes from Tuesday's patch that aren't related and bump it up a few days. I have tried logging in all day today with no luck. It takes so long to time-out too its so not worth the time spent. If this problem is really left until Tuesday and I can't login until then. HELL YEA i'm so out of here and SL will lose alot of new players I would bet. On a side note, I pay more for SL currently per month then I pay for my World of Warcraft account which is substantially more stable, less laggy, and when it has login issues for an extended period, Blizzard is very good about giving you the time back (so you aren't paying not to play) and keeping people updated as to where the issues stand.

My 2 cents!

I personally was thinking about upgrading to a premium account and paying per month for this game just so I could have a small plot of land, but these login problems really don't do good for me as I am very cheap and if I can't play, I won't even think about paying.

Sure, I'll remain, but I'll go to a basic account and stop paying monthly. Trying to sell my land anyway.. even though I know there's millions of m2 of land out there that nobody is buying. (For other reasons).

maybe I should just release, cut my losses, and save myself some real $$ every month from here on..

Do people quit smoking because of emphysema or lung cancer?

Do people quit drinking because of cirrhosis?

Do people quit having unprotected sex because of HIV?

Do people quit making war because of death?

I got curious and read one of those For New Players postings that popped up all of a sudden. I'm as impatient as anyone else, but this helped:

From: Philip Linden

Hi,

Sorry for the load and login troubles. We are doing everything we can, and certainly going through some growth pains here. Nothing specific changed in 1.6 that is causing these problems - they are caused by SL's growth and specific types of in-world content that is being created. Here is an overview:

Our database load is suddenly increasing and creating the observed login delays when there are both lots of people in SL and lots of people trying to log in. We don't know why the load is increasing so sharply, and we didn't predict failure at these load levels.

While we are trying to figure out the specific cause of the problems, the next patch (1.6.5) has some changes that MAY provide some temporary help. The big change is an improvement in the efficiency of the way we check email for scripts. There are currently thousands of scripted objects in SL which are checking for email a total of several hundred times per second. This was something that we didn't anticipate - content creators in SL are way overloading the system with these email checks, so we need to redesign for a better approach. Hopefully this will drop overall database login load, because profiling suggests that this call is where the database spends most of it's time.

Looking forward, there are two types of database load we are trying to rapidly fix. The first is inventory, and the second is in-world searches via the finder. Because we have put no limits of inventory, people have staggering amounts (terabytes) of stuff in inventory. The size of the data (again something we didn't anticipate in initial design) is going to force us to rapidly build a distributed system of many database clusters to store everyone's inventory. Right now, the queries that find things in inventory are putting severe load on the database. With respect to in-world (when you type something into the search bar in the find window), we are looking at ways to move this data to a secondary server so that the queries can be made against that server rather than the main database.

We are working as quickly as we can to fix the problems - as you can see from above there isn't a silver bullet or a design error. We are just being stressed to the limit by some systems (scripted objects, inventory, and text searches) that are growing at a rate much more rapid than the growth of the SL user base. Obviously just asking everyone to delete stuff from inventory and not use objects that get email messages from outside SL isn't a sufficient solution - we need to quickly redesign to adapt to the conditions we are seeing.

Obviously Tuesday's 1.6.5 isn't going to be the final fix, but there's nothing like the freedom of SL, so I'm going to stick it out. This episode is just thinning the herd :P

I was a customer, now I'm not.
05-15-2005 15:35
Yes, LL will lose customers. I'm one of the customers they've lost. After I upgraded to premium, this happens. Well, Linden Labs, I don't need to pay for crap; I can make enough of it on my own.

I have to completely agree with you. I pay for a service that I dont get to use. DOes anyone else find this a little disturbing? If youre not going to alleviate what this is doing by crediting our accounts for a couple of months (yea right.. Linden go without taking money) at least compensate us $L lol hell im game! But seriously guys. YOu make enough money from all of our accounts to hire someone to fix the problems.. One more note, I think as soon as we complain about it (and it's a valid complaint that you KNOW how to fix) WHY oh WHY do you make us wait for sometimes a week to month to have it fixed. If you KNOW how to fix it do it plz. I mean seriously why wait a week.. we're having the problems NOW.

One very interesting thing is to write down how you feel now, even if it's heated and tense, and keep a link to the thread in mind. Even if you leave SL, say you come back in a few months or a year, and if this Forum is still here, re-read it. :)
