I think what I said was that the graphics cards speed wasn't as important as getting the maximum VRAM available. Anyway....

Oh no Tread. Please do not tell me I have made a serious mistake.

Video Card: Area-51m 7700 NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go with 256MB of DDR3 memory
Motherboard: IntelĀ® 915P Chipset Supporting PCI-Express

That should be plenty fast. I'm not sure how the laptop chips compare to the desktop ones, but the 6800 is top of the range at the moment. You've got 256Mb of VRAM and PCI-e so that's all good.

It is actually awful not knowing what the heck you are doing.

A Mini Mac is perfect for SL :)

Hm, glad you are happy, or enjoying your joke. :)

My iBook is quite comparable to a Mini Mac. 1+ GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9200 32 MB, laptop hard drive. SL plays, barely, if I crank most or all of the graphics options down to minimum. I get anywhere from 2-5 FPS in primmy, scripty, heavily textured, and/or crowded areas. I can get up to 25 or so standing idle and alone in an uncluttered sim, going to very high altitude, etc. 1 GB is really the minimum amount of RAM, you might get by with 768 MB if you don't want to do anything else while you play.

NVIDIA is to be preferred over ATI for SL in all cases. Even a GeForce 2MX 32 MB seems to do better than many Radeons.

I am on 256 Kbps DSL. SL never seems to use more than 150 or so. I have SL's bandwidth throttle (more like a suggestion) set to 200. Latency varies widely from one sim to the next. Try to have land in a sim that has low latency to your client. If you want streaming music, you can do low bandwidth streams (< or = 56 Kbps) without too many big problems even on 256 Kbps DSL. If you want fatter streams and less lag, I'd consider 640 Kbps to be the minimum. High latency will kill your frame rate almost faster than anything else.

quite comparable except it costs at, or over 2x as much

Disk cache for performance
03-02-2005 06:08
One point that may make a difference with windows swapping: a disk with 8 MBytes cache. Other that that, I agree with Eggy - I have a 1200 Duran with a geForce 5200 and 1 GB Ram, and I have very predictable performnace, just like eggy... laggy only on laggy areas.

A second system with 512 MB DOES freeze when windows swaps. It is a 2.2 GHz P IV, wth the same graphic card. I would say, 1 GB main memory would be a great idea. But this is ALSO only a problem in a Very Dense Sims... TeaZers Isle, yesterday for example... Had to relog twice.

"how am I EVER gonna fill it? (I need to say that after every hard drive purchase))"

one word for you "Video" i have over 1200 gig of the stuff across my computers. any new comp should have about at least 500gig if your going to try to skip upgrading for a few years.

1 gig of ram makes a huge diff and dont skimp on the motherboard
cpu~250
g card~250
mobo~150
good hard drive(s) ~250

(o btw its a bit off topic but how do you tell your framerate?)

alt+1 brings up the statistics panel, which among many other things, has your current framerate as a number, and a 'history' scrolling graph

I use a strange graphics card on this PC and a Radeon 9200 on other. Both have 128mb RAM
This one is based on a GeForce2 but it's using PCI (not PCI-E, or AGP :() because this PC is a Dell without an AGP slot :\ However, this PC seems to do better on SL than my AGP Radeon, probably because the AGP acceleration doesn't even work on the Radeon...
