I am currently using Wine from Gentoo, version 20050930. I don't know if one of the patches they apply is what's helping but the program is starting. I can log in. It's just that after being online for a few minutes, the bandwidth usage drops to 0. My avatar can't move anymore and if I click on Friends or Find or anything that looks up stuff on the network it crashes hard. The main problem that wine seems to be reporting is from the FMOD subsystem. It's seems to be trying to play the stream even though I have audio set on mute. The exact error I get is WARNING Could not load data 'c:\windows\profiles\thecrypto\Application Data\SecondLife\cache\4c8c3c77-de8d-bde2-b9b8-32635e0fd4a6.dsf': This command failed because FSOUND_Init was not called It seems to be looking better now so I hope to start seeing some more linux users in world. Can't wait for an offical client thought. UPDATE: I have been in SL almost an hour, talked to people even and moved around without dropping. I just hand to enable sound support in Wine. Vanilla wine with the gentoo patches does work. Along with -nopixeldepth Hey, I'm using that version as well, however, it doesn't start, and gives me this: CODE /raid-root/SecondLife $ ./SecondLife.exe -nopixeldepth Do you have a glu32.dll anywhere on your setup? |

I wish I could try this out before buying a subscription to transgaming, but my lappy wont compile because it gets the dreded errors no one can figure out how to fix.
So has anyone been able to get 1.7 final to work with WineX using the pre-compiled binaries? If so I may risk the 15 dollar minimum they demand for a subscription. Then again my lappy is old so I dont know if it would be worth it: 1 Ghz P3 512 MB ram Geforce 2 Go Ubuntu 5.10 But I so wana use SL on the go. -.- |

I can log onto sl with winex3 ... only thing is tho, the client itself is laggy for me as well as sl. I literally can't do anything. There's no point. Not like I could move if I wanted to anyways.

After an hour of trying last night, I was able to get on. Today thing've been better-- I have had no delays getting on.
One thing I notice about the client-- with 1.7 *before* I log in, resizing and moving the window appears to work much faster than 1.6. That is to say, from the outset it looks like the 1.7 client ought to be faster. However, once I log in, my client FPS are down to about 1/5 to 1/4 of what they used to be with 1.6. The thing is, though, almost all the Windows users I've been asking in world have been lamenting similar tales of woe with their client performance. So, I don't think winex is to blame for the poor performance. Here's hoping the Lindens solve the performance problems and soon! I haven't sold a thing since this whole fiasco started. I imagine the rest of the SL economy isn't doing so hot either with all these problems... |

Hrm. A quick check tells me that I compiled it with the opengl USE flag:
CODE emerge -pv wine Trying to locate glu32.dll seems to not work. The closest thing it comes up with is: CODE /usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/winex/lib/libglu32.so Which I suspect isn't what I want. Sorry to bother you about this again, but any ideas? |

I'm in also, login is pretty smooth. But I'm getting 125% packet loss according to SL, and my FPS is 0.9-1.5, when it used to be 30-40. Yeah, it runs. But is totally useless.

CODE /usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/winex/lib/libglu32.so Looks like Cedega and Wine aren't agreeing with one another, get rid of Cedega and try just running normal Wine. Just for comparison my emerge -pv line is as follows CODE app-emulation/wine-20050930-r1 +X +alsa -arts -cups -debug +esd +gif -glut -jack +jpeg -lcms +ldap +nas +ncurses +opengl +oss -scanner +truetype +xml2 0 kB |

Grar. No can do. Took out cedega, and compiled wine with many different USE flag combinations. Don't have a libglu32.dll.so or anything similar. Darn.

Mrrr! I just got rid of the CVS WINE completely, and installed 0.9 (the first official beta version!). Well, SL seems to work flawlessly on my computer now. No loading problems, no weird error messages, no sudden disconnects, no weird lag, and no bandwidth strangeness.
I'm very happy. |

1.7 working on WineX 3.3.2-1.
For 1.7 I simply followd the exact same install steps that I use with every other version. Click the download link in firefox, Chose open with -> cedega ( or save, then run "cedega /path/to/file/filename.exe" ) Run through the install. Chose NO to "would you like to start second life now?" Then run second life using winex3 IF second life is trying to run in full screen mode, You have to trick it into windowd mode. ( The arcane "settings.ini" file only exists AFTER you run and successfully exit second life, So no good for first time installs. ) Edit your ~/.transgaming/config file, login as root first or if your on ubuntu.. CODE sudo gedit ~/.transgaming/config Find the line CODE ;"Desktop" = "800x600" and replace it with, CODE "Desktop" = "800x600" ie, Remove the ";". Save the file and then run second life again with winex3 SL should start up and say that It can not run in fullscreen mode because your screen size is to small. Hit ok, and then PROPERLY quit sl by hitting the quit button. If you can manage to get SL to exit properly, It should save its !fulscreen settings, So now just re-edit your config file and disable the desktop by putting the ";" back in there. EDIT: Oh and if your lucky enough to have cedega make a nice little icon on your gnome or kde desktop. Make sure to... 1. Edit the launcher and change "cedega" to "winex3" 2. make it run from a terminal, Not really required, but helpfull sometimes. If it will help any, I have attached my cedege/wine config file. Lol the more I use linux, The more ridiculously funny the "windows world" gets. The forum system tells me " Invalid File Type" just because the file dosnt have ".txt" _____________________

Hmm... SL 1.7.1.3 runs for me on Linux (Ubuntu 5.10 + NVIDIA + Point2Play + WineX 3.3.2, in windowed mode), though that might be an overstatement...
I'm experiencing much much packet loss... which I don't when I boot Windows and use SL... This is kinda unusable ![]() |
