Anyone ever notice how much RAM SL uses up?

Seriously, even WoW dosent use this level of RAM. Even Maya dosent use this level of RAM.

No kidding. SL on my laptop? 3fps. Ironforge on my laptop? 15fps.

It's fine on my desktop, but yes, the processor gets hot even with a premium all copper heatsink and a really good fan. Several case fans.

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
ATI Radeon x1300
1024mb RAM

WoW is a VERY bad example. It's about a resource instensive as notepad.. well maybe not that low but it is VERY low. Graphically and CPU it's very light.

Oh yeah? Well, I originally had a P4 (2.00GHz) with only 256MB of DDR SDRAM, with -integrated graphics-. I couldn't do -anything- in SL, when I was a newbie. DX

I normally get 3-6 FPS, even after upgrading it to it's max potential.
(1GB SDRAM, GeForce FX 5200 PCI-normal [128MB].

All games are like this. With single-core cpu's, a game will use 100% of it at all times to keep the frame rate as high as it will go. With dual-core cpu's, like an Athlon64 X2 4400+, it will use 100% of a single core, making it appear at 50% usage. It's just the way games work. That way the frames per second is at its highest at all times.

OK, I beg to differ and I have proof now. As I have been saying in the past, my CPU had been running at 100% load even when just standing still staring at a wall. I didn't think that was normal, but you seem to think it was. I agree that they will work hard when doing something in world, but not doing nothing.
Well, Monday morning while in SL , my screen went blank and all efforts to get my computer back and running were futile. Given the history of my CPU, I suspected that it was fried.
Deciding this was my chance to upgrade, I went out and bought a new 800 FSB motherboard and a P4 3.0Ghz. processor. I installed this and ....nothing....still dead.
Fearing that it was my hard drive because the power supply was showing correct voltage output, I took it to CompUSA for diagnosis and they came back and told me that it was my ATI graphics card.
DOH!
So I now have a new mobo, CPU and graphics card and I must say SL runs VERY nicely. I have yet to tweak any settings for better quality, but I'm happy as it is right now.

AND

My CPU is runnning at 50% load now in SL......NOT 100% !!! I'm not utilizing the 800FSB of the board yet since I re-used my new RAM that I had recently bought (currently 768Mb)

So as I said before, the CPU should not be running at 100% capacity when just standing around. The proof is right here.

Would that be a pentium D by any chance.... dual core......sl only uses one core hence your 50% cpu load which is actually 1 core running at 100%....the same as your old processor did....k thx bye

Unfortunatly you forgot about Hyperthereading, your old CPU never had it but your new one does. It splits your CPU into 2 logical ones. Kinda like a virtual dual core. Ritaku was correct.

This is right unless the game is multithreaded.

ooOOoo... I had forgotten about that! I sit corrected :-)

Can it have hyperthreading and not be a Pentium D? I believe mine does have the hyperthreading, but I opted out of getting the Pentium D becasue the matching board for it would not accept my current RAM.

I guess the final thing I can say is.....woo hoo! I found a board that will handle SL

Of course, my laptop is a P4 3.06Ghz and it has hyperthreading .
