Anyone ever notice how much RAM SL uses up?

Ok, so I have photoshop open with 5 active files, uses up 82MB of RAM, but SL is currently using 728MB of RAM... what is up with that?
Seriously, even WoW dosent use this level of RAM. Even Maya dosent use this level of RAM.
Maya usually clocks in at around 250MB.
Why in the heck does SL consume this much of my system resources?
Anyone else have some numbers to post on this?

ten tousand of almost uniquely used textures, also each avatar texture s pretty much unique
actually i wish sl wold devour my 4GB of ram so i would not need this stupid dice sized cache

I have a screenshot of SL using up 1.7 Gigs of ram, yes, 1.7, IM me in world for proof lol. It would of used up more if I never ran out, I disable my virutal ram.

What they said.....
seriously - in Maya, try creating say.. 10,000 objects - keep it simple, cubes will do. now, render them all with oh, say 1000 different textures at about 512x512x32bit, that'll be about right.
Now, tell me if it can render all that in a tiny fraction of a second, and tell me that it is still only using a few tens of Mb or ram, becasue that is a single sim, that is only 2/3 full, and without any avatars in it. Now add the neighboring sims in 8 directions, and multiply up as needed, because that is what happens when you spin through 360 degrees while standing around.
Basically, there is NOTHING out there that does the same as SL does. The apps that you are comparing it to are very very different in the detail of what they achieve and in the methods they use to do it.

Well then perhaps SL should change the minimum RAM reguirements for playing this game? Or at least add a disclaimer to the current requirements? (it will run, but performance will suffer)

SL leaks memory way more than most "commercial" software releases. Usually memory leaks are the last cleanup work developers do, but it is hard unpleasant work and can easily break things mysteriously in code that has been hacked to death for 3+ years. Given LL's "we like to work on fun stuff" policy, this probably sits lower on the priority list than coming and washing my car.

There is nothing out there that does puts as much unnecessary load on the client in order to save writing server code. They've recently done some work on culling occluded objects, but this wastefulness wasn't so much a original design decision as a coding convenience.

That's what draw distance is for. I've got mine set to 96 meters, I'm lounging around a skyhome with maybe 10 different textures (some translucent, and some animated water in the pool), there's one other AV around and I'm getting 40 FPS. Now here's the problem, whenever I de-minimize SL, my GPU temperature gains about 1 Celsius every 2 seconds. It was at 77 C before I moved my case and removed the side panel to let it vent. SL needs a framerate limiter, that'd be the most basic function that it sorely lacks, but I could definitely see the utility of a memory limiter too. I don't understand why LL has 'optimized' the grid in such a way that complex games like Portal Wars are no longer possible, but won't place any user-adjustable limits on the client itself. I really feel they're out of touch with what I think is very important as an end-user.

heres a new one
06-24-2006 03:58
Last night I got on and was fine for about 15 minutes until I crashed. I crashed several times afterthat so I got back on and started monitoring my performance.
In my house....standing still for 10 minutes
30 fps 0 packet loss 120 msec sim ping 100 msec user ping ...and my CPU working at 100% CONSTANTLY!
the CPU maintained temps between 64-68 degrees the whole time but was constantly working. If everything that is visible in my area is rezzed...why would the CPU need to be cranking at 100% ?
Motherboard is a Asus A7N8X-X with 400Mhz FSB and an AMD AthlonXP3200 (barton) running at 2.2 Ghz
It just doesn't seem right that it woud need to run at peak if I'm just standing there doing nothing.
RAM is currently at 512Mb
I might add that it hasn't crashed this frequently and I've been running fine for the past week or two..just last night it started acting up...could it have semething to do with SL going down yesterday afternoon?

Ouch on the 64-68 its kinda high too high for my view for a AMD AthlonXP 3200+. You should change the heatsink and fan to a Zalman CNPS7000A-AlCu The Zalman and Arctic Silver 5 should bring it down below 50c

Ram

My system 'creaked' along also with just 512MB RAM, yesterday I added another 1GB and the lag has improved, not nearly as bad as before.

From: Markubis Brentano why would the CPU need to be cranking at 100% ? All games are like this. With single-core cpu's, a game will use 100% of it at all times to keep the frame rate as high as it will go. With dual-core cpu's, like an Athlon64 X2 4400+, it will use 100% of a single core, making it appear at 50% usage. It's just the way games work. That way the frames per second is at its highest at all times.

My temps ran at low to mid 50s with that game.....here I'm peaking at 68 C...not good. This just started happeneing very recently too. EDIT: I'd also like to add...in other games, when I'm standing still and nothing is happening, the CPU is NOT working hard...here, it is working constantly...even when I'm by myself and standing still for 10 minutes.....doesn't seem right

cs source aint really a cpu intensive game. SL seems to depend a lot more of the cpu than the graphic card, though i wish i could get a multithread version so i would make a complete use of my dual core, not just toasting half of it give me the full thing LL!!

More memory would make a difinite difference. Your specs are better than mine, but I have very few problems now that I've gone up to a full gig of memory.

I think I found what was causing my problems. Bad memory stick.
I originally had some generic 256Mb mem in my computer up until a few months ago. I added 256Mb more of Kingston RAM and the computer still worked fine.
I added 512Mb more a few weeks ago and my computer kept shutting down, so I pulled the new mem out until I could evaluate more and stuck with the 512 RAM (one generic and one Kingston)
yesterday I removed all of my memory and installed the 512Mb Kingston RAM in the first slot, fired up the computer and got onto SL...no problem. I then shut down, installed the other 256Mb of RAM and fired up the computer...still no problems. I then installed my original generic RAM and poof....blue screen and memory dump.
I removed the generic RAM and ran a memory diagnostic on the existing Kingston RAM with no problems.
So far, so good...no crashes...no freezes.... and I seem to have a 3-4 degree drop in CPU temps. A new fan is on order per a sugestion earlier inthis thread.

No kidding. SL on my laptop? 3fps. Ironforge on my laptop? 15fps.
It's fine on my desktop, but yes, the processor gets hot even with a premium all copper heatsink and a really good fan. Several case fans.

using too much RAM?
07-03-2006 05:35
you think using too much RAM is a problem?
since i installed the new version, everytime i try to log in, it crashes, i cant even log in fully before the crash report appears, 1.09 was fine, i could play it no problem, so whats up with 1.10.
I would love to hear what is being done about this

Indeed, it's a fairly GRAPHICS intensive game but no way is it CPU intensive. That's the realm of stuff like Flight sims, Racing sims and of course SL O.o
