With QT 7.1 SL will crash at the "initialising Quicktime" stage of loading.
Does anyone know if SL still tries to "initialise QuickTime" if streaming video is disabled in prefs?

If you like being able to get into SL, that is.

Yes, it still tries to initialize QT with streaming turned off.

Not been a problem for me, on OS X. I think that I have video turned off but it's a setting that can be altered during an SL session anyway.

Yep me too. I posted about this in the Tech forum after the first few times it happened.
I haven't tried to use QT in SL for months, but everynow and then I want to watch a video clip during my normal web browsing and I load it back up. I can log on for a time or two and then POW, "initialising Quicktime" during bootup and I get no farther. Only way to get back in is wait the 5-8 min for QT to be uninstalled. I don't think it's just version 7.1 either. I have had this problem for a while now. |

I doubt this will be a problem for Mac users. But Apple really needs to work harder on improving the QuickTime experience for Windows folks. On the Mac QuickTime is fantastic. On Windows, well, it's ... less than fantastic.

Luckily, you can find quicktime without all that garbage by Googling, but I don't think that's the way Apple wants it. ![]() _____________________

I'm a Mac and Linux user myself, but "lololololol" doesn't help here.
You can download QuickTime without iTunes and all that stuff directly from the Apple Website. There's a "Standalone Installer" link on the QT download page or you can use this link: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html I haven't tried 7.1 under Windows though. |

I just installed Quicktime 7.1 from the direct link to the standalone installer provided in antoher post here, and SL launches and initializes Quicktime with no errors. Once in world, movies and music streams are playing correctly. Must be a local thing. This machine is Win2K Pro, so if on XP, YMMV. |

On Windows, well, it's ... less than fantastic. ![]() See windows has more problems because it is more popular, if macs were popular they'd have hackers up the wazoo as well, but unfortunately they arn't, just dull little boxes performing dull little tasks. Windows has more problems because everyone knows that mostly everyone uses windows for mostly everything. The only thing a mac is good for is big business (really big) and music. Big business because it has almost no viruses because of its unpopularity so your business data will be pretty safe, but it isn't recommended for really anything else. ![]() All hail, your screen speaks the truth! Big business because it has almost no viruses because of its unpopularity so your business data will be pretty safe, but it isn't recommended for really anything else. Well once some of the smart hackers get onto their stolen macs (I mean who would BUY one) they will take advantage of your weak firewalls because you think you are safe from hackers just from the unpopularity and the windows ZOMFGPWNING!!1!! the mac, you are sadly mistaken my friends. If I appear to hate macs I do, they did something to me I will probably forget over time! MACS YOU ARE DEAD TO ME. Oh I am not saying that the windows doesn't have its problems but most of them (maybe 95% are because of so many H.A.C.K.E.R.S.) _____________________

I like having a computer that looks like every other one. I like being limited to where I can buy software! I like being limited to only what Apple offers!! I like having to buy a new system any time Apple changes its mind on hardware instead of just spending $50-100 on parts. I like only having a few choices for a system I like that if I want a better system I have to come up with over $6000 for what I could have in a $1000 or less PC. I like having to drive 40-120 Miles to get to the nearest repair place. Let them PC Users go just down the street. Serves them right! I like having 2 choices for industry standard 3D Animation Software! Pixar must be using Cinema4D! OMG!! The jobs out there for Cinema 4D users! WoW!!! AutoCAD runs like a dream on the Mac! I like knowing that Bootcamp will most likely NOT support Vista. It's good that they're doing a total re-write of Windows for Vista! I like having a computer that any simpleton can use! Just shows that I didnt need an education, certifications & degrees in computers! That stoopid Windoze XP Pro!!! HAH!! Had it running for 3 years and it crashed twice!!! It's garbage!!! OH! And worse!!! When a program crashes, it doesnt crash the whole OS!! WTF is up with that?? ![]() |

Please keep us updated because I get mine to work for a few days or maybe even a week, and then "BAM" "POW" "ZAP"..no login. Just did this like three days ago, no issues, then last night, no login. Uninstall, works fine. I will try a Googling for a stripped version of QT tho. Hadn't thought of that. |

I hate having to regedit the quicktime and itune codes that they want to load in on startup I just uninstall iTunes after installing the combo, and haven't had any problems. I'm on 7.0.4, though. Also, QuickTime does have an option to turn off the tray icon. If you just take that out of the startup, it tends to come back. Thanks for the heads up! |

Not C4D. And as a QA tester of alpha software... crashing does not take the OS with it. OSX (since 2000) has taken care of that. With the binary releases we are soon going to start producing mac/pc games side by side instead of first for PC and then for the (growing) 5% of us. (are we really at 5% still btw?) Proof of Stuergoen's[sp] law. |

Ok. I AM having this problem.... I installed a new codec pack and quicktime 7.1 installed.
I'm screwed now... can't log on... SL crashes when it reaches the 'initializing quicktime' portion of the logon. Please help!! Where do I get 7.0 again?? The Quicktime site only has 7.1 available. thank you _____________________

Ok, so I fixed it myself... (after receiving a reply from LL tech support stating my graphic card does not support SL... haha... thank you for nothing LL tech support...)
So anyway, SL was fine before I installed these codecs. Then SL was crashing. Now It's fine again... I just re re installed quicktime 7.1 + itunes. It's all good. _____________________

i love SL... MAC sucks. I can do anything your MAC can do on my AMD64 (and faster too).
Does windows suck? Yes. Badly. But not as Bad As A Mac. Does Linux Suck? I should kill you just for saying that. Does Quicktime Suck. OMFG yes. Why on earth would they choose quicktime when there are so many other more dependable formats. <ahem> realmedia </ahem> (And Yes It Will Play In Linux) *edit* Thanks to the guy who posted the quicktime without itunes. I came here to find something like that. About to try quicktime and bite the bullet for SL video. Only for you SL... Only for you. |

I should kill you just for saying that. LOLOLOL Thank you Neurosis for my morning chuckle ![]() And no problems here. Running 7.1 with Windows XP Pro on my spiffy new computer and I can get in just fine. On a side note, the only thing a mac is good for is graphic design and I should know.. i'm a graphic designer. The rendering is top notch, other than that you can't get a damn thing for it and your always reading the fine print on all the boxes mumbling "please let this play on my mac, please let this play on my mac." pfftt. Windows may be the fat hog of the world sucking everyone into its inescapable gravitational force but at least you can pick up a game box in the store and know its compatable.Oh and LINUX ROCKS!! |
