I just recently started using ArtRage2. Whilst the full version costs a massive 19.95USD, there is also a perfectly usable free version with a reduced tool set. Put simply, it's digital painting in real time. It simulates the look and feel of working with paints incredibly well. I figure it would be useful for anyone wanting realistic painted textures etc, so thought I'd mention it. Clickie the image below for a high rez version - this is just me messing around with various painting tools to give you an idea. I blogged about it here if ya wanna read more waffle by me on it.

You can always tell when da Kritter's bored, LOL... Anyway, it looks like some cool stuff if you're into it... and if not... well, check out Kris's galleries anyways... (same site ) ... Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go hide before she finds me...

From: Siobhan Taylor You can always tell when da Kritter's bored, LOL... Well I'm not bored now! I have ArtRage2! Although as Fran probably quite rightly said when I showed her the above example (which as I said is a brush test, not friggin artwork, in my defence!) and mentioned I'd enjoyed using it so much I'd been inspired to buy a new graphic tablet to use with it; "Congratulations. You just spent over 200 bucks so you can paint like a 4 year old." Da bitch.

Very cool, thanks Kris! And of course it's wonderful. Andy Bearsley, Matt Fox-Wilson, and a bunch of old Metacreations guys are behind this company.

I've been using Alias Sketchbook for ages, I think this is probably better ! What a gem ! My daughter is 9, and she told me today Sketchbook is "Better for colouring in", but ArtRage is "Better for painting". So there you have it I've run out of printer ink again, goddam children ! I think the pencil tool in Sketchbook is the best feeling, most realistic pencil of any software I've used, but I can see myself using Artrage more than Sketchbook now.

That's SUCH a cute art. Amber, you sure do post gems when you make something creative (the Infohub thing was so beautiful)!
I think what is particularly kewl about ArtPad is how USEABLE the interface is... if you're drawing on a big canvas and your cursor (brush) runs over one of the palettes, it autohides until the next stroke you make. You can also rotate VERY flexibly, and zoom by holding the Z key--ultra-nifty!
There are so many intuitive little touches.
I just got some time to play with this, so I'm making some textures for my next pack to hand out free in SL! =^_^=

ArtPad 2's paintbrush tool excels at giving things depth.

Awe, thank you Torley. Gah, I need to look through the help file. The only shortcut I've found was the color picker, and that was by pressing random buttons on my tablet. Just like in real life, I'm having a heck of a time getting paint to work!

Wow, Amber, what an elegant rat! Much better than my bit of half-traced scribbly silliness.

Painter sucks
03-06-2006 02:04
I'd been using painter since 3.0 and by 6.0 it got bloated as heck. It often didn't work with wacom drivers and changed companies like 3 times. I missed painter classic but it was oddly hard to get.... BTW painter was VERY expensive. Now this comes along and WOW... and cross platform! I just may have to take up digital painting again. Here is my old work (mind you this page is several years old so no, that address and the one it's links to, plus the phone number, is not correct) http://www.citycafe.com/resume/art/

The program is indeed fun to use and worth the 7K lindens (yeah, stupid VAT ) for the full version. Now I can draw like a 4 years old too!
