New Clothing Shadows and Highlights Templates

I decided since I had such a hard time making up shadows and highlights in photoshop. Well I turned my attention to what I was good at, and i'm a decent Maya artist, so I loaded in the SL mesh into Maya, setup some lights and shadow maps and baked them, then I took the resulting horrible looking shots (The SL mesh isn't pretty) and ran them through photoshop, first manually smoothing out the worst area's then running it through a guassian. A little tinkering later results in two transparent textures you can overlay on your clothing to get a some basic but good looking 3D shadowing and highlights on your clothing in SL.

These are just black and white but i'm sure if you play with the color or texture overlay, layer blending options in photoshop you can get something better suited to your specific clothing.

You can just drag and drop the layers from the templates while inside photoshop into your project, these are 1024x1024 so I suggest you resize first if your working at a different size.

Note: If you knew all this already this is for those who don't.

Your welcome. ^_^

I admit the shadows are probably more useful then the highlights.

I can't help it. I am working on a new version. This version is just to low quality I think, I'll post the better one when I finish (I am doing alot more by hand @_X), I am also using a higher quality mesh provided by Zee Pixel.

EDIT: (To avoid triple posting X_@)

Here they are, these are a different set, made using a different method, they may be used in conjuction with or instead of the previous set. These ones include the base layer I used to make the transparent overlays from. I worked alot harder this time, but quality is in the eye of the beholder. ^_^

Aeron- I love the shades and highlights- thank yo uso much :)- I do have a question for anyone that can help me out with this. I first down loaded the not so sharp version and was able to add color- when I tried it with the sharper version it all comes up in grey- I am sure ir is me because to be honest I am trying to learn Gimp at the same time... how can I get color and away from greyscale? Thank you in advance :)

After you opened the layer go to the "image" menu and mouse over "mode"......check RBG. That makes the greyscale layer RBG instead of greyscale so your colors will work.

Edited to add.....that is for GIMP 2.4. I forget the method for 2.2 but I think it's the same.

Yeah, sorry about the greyscale. I did it because it made the files smaller.

Thank you!

And I am learning GIMP.

Wow, I will say one thing. I now certainly understand why
clothes and hair cost so much. It is *so* hard.

This forum is helping me tremendously.

Hope to see some of you in SL.

Here is an excellent tutorial on how to start doing your own shading. It should translate to GIMP ok, or at least give you the idea.

Wow, it's nice to see that more people in SL are finally helping newbies (myself included) obtain newer resources to play with when it comes to content creation. Thank you so much for posting this!
