This has been argued alot... Price them according to whatever you want.

Most use the time =$$$ Some use the "Well I made some cool stuff got a name for myself lets jack them prices up some"

Its all a matter of choice to the buyer and even then when they find out said item has flaws like bad seams or not very clean edges then they may or may not buy from you again.

Price as you see fit..if you raise em high and don't make any sales well then your too high..but you can lower them.

Just test and see..

There is also the difference between the designers that actually create their works by painting them. (painting = making your own textures) Which is alot more time consuming then taking a item from a website. Whic you clean it and putting it on the template. Or the upload a texture and create the clothes in game with sliders.

Price is pretty subjective. I sell most of my tops for $200 and most bottoms for $150. The only real reason is that when I started there were very few people making clothes. I just got into it originally because I was desperately in need of an income stream to offset my huge tax bill every week. I didn't want to step on any toes so I decided to price mine above everyone else's. I try to justify it by doing very high quality work but not everyone will see it that way. Since then there are now tons of clothing makers and I just stick with the way I've always done pricing. I think it'd be kind of dull if everything was low priced. What would there be to save up for?

I price mine depending on how much time and energy it took to make the article of clothing or outfit. I sell some simple tops and bottoms for less than 100L each, but I have made some newer ones recently that I might charge more for since they took a long time to make. I also price them depending how complicated they were to make: I tend to use a mix of my own textures with other clothing pics (laces, zippers, etc.). Complete outfits I tend to make them between 350L-500L, but they have many clothing articles and I spend a lot of time making them. :)

As someone who doesn't make clothing and only buys :D :D..here is my opinion. I will pay a higher price for something that is high quality. I am not going to name names here, not to mention I haven't been around very long. There are one or two designers in SL with huge names and alot of hype surrounding their clothing. I personally don't see the quality in the clothing but I'm assuming the name perhaps came from the fact that there *used* to be quality or I'm not sure. I'm not willing to pay for something at any price honestly if the quality isn't there, especially a high priced item. Painted or not painted, I don't want to see low resolution, badly mismatched seams, discoloration, etc. I'm a picky person when it comes to this stuff lol. Anyways that's just how *I* look at what i spend on clothing.

Pricing is purely subjective. I try to gage it on how much work I put into it. For example, items I sell separately (tops, skirts, pants) I usually charge $100 a piece for. Outfits with multiple pieces I charge anywhere from $200-$500 depending on how many pieces and how much work I put into it. Personally I like to keep my stuff in that range. Its not to say that I wont ever have anything more expensive, but for now that is the price range I work within.

We have our own store and I've done enough shopping to know the price ranges other designers work within. Personally I'm not too keen on spending over $1000 on one outfit unless it is really well done, has prim attachments etc. or includes custom avatar skin, shape & hair.

My stuff has stayed essentially around the same pricing area from ever since I started. Now I do do limited editions which are a lot more pricey, but they're just that - limited.

Tops are anywhere from $75-$125, with the odd one more than that if it's especially unique/complicated. Pants are in that same range, with themed outfits fluctuating all over the place.

I paint my textures or use swatches to put them together. I price them based on how happy I was with them, not just how much time I put into it. If I spend a day on something and I don't like how it turned out, I'll often price it lower than something I realy liked that I spent two hours on. I want the quality of my work to reflect the price.

I always strive for high quality and can be downright obsessive about not having any seams showing. My work has definitely gotten better over the year and a bit that I've been doing this, but aside from creating limited editions, my prices have stayed about the same.

I also have an area called The Attic where I sell my past weekly freebies for $45 apiece. These can be lower quality, but often aren't. For instance, right now I'm giving away a series of untucked graphic tees.

So it's all a matter of personal preference. As it has been stated before in Second Life, if your prices are too high, people won't buy.

wuvme :) we wuv you :p

Alot of the people who are pricing their things that high are doing so because its a RL issue for them. SL gives them RL cash.

For these people I dont think it is a matter of quality as much as it is a matter of making money to convert.

Currently, im strongly supporting these designers as they are fairly new , and make excellent quality items with few issues of seams matching if any at all.

You can't go wrong with any of these designers. There are plenty that I failed to mention because it just isn't practical.

When I first began designing clothes I bought some clothing fom some other designers to see the quality of their work. While I try to make the items as accurate as possible (no discoloration, mismatched seams, etc.) I noticed that there were some items that I had bought that were kinda sloppily made.

This brings me to the next question: how many of the designers have made an article of clothing that turned out like this and decided to change it?

I made a set that had a corset, and when looking at it closely I noticed some discoloration (I usually catch these before releasing them, but this one somehow slipped by). Being the obsessive compulsive person that I am, I couldn't let it go (it was actually bothering me to see the bit of discoloration), so I fixed it and sent the fixed item to those that had bought it. As it seems, many of them didn't notice, but since I did it was my duty to fix it. ;)

If I can't get a seam to match acceptably after a bit of effort it tends to go into the black hole that is my "maybe I'll finish this some day" folder, never to be seen again.

Thanks to Briana for giving props out to the new designers!
It's not an easy world to break into with so many other wonderful designers out there, but we're doing allright and I personally appreciate every credit. Thanks to all of you who've been to Indigo's Mourning After and helped us out.
I try to keep my prices as low as possible, even with it being a RL money issue for me. Thanks again!

What I usually do is wear my new item around for awhile. If there are obvious seams or something mismatched, it will bug me to the point where I will make many new versions to make sure it's lined up properly. These things really bug me, so if it's a bit mismatched and it doesn't tweak me, I usually leave it. I find that's a pretty good indicator whether or not a little shifting is a big deal. Not to mention the fact that no matter what, with different body types, you /will/ get some shifting. That's especially a problem given how much unisex stuff I create.

On prices however.
08-18-2004 06:08
When i first came to SL, i spent nearly ALL my money on Fey Brightwillow. I then found this Chip Midnight person, who had ALOT of clothes up and they all looked so real. Until i choked on the price.

I saw his prices and was so pissed off that i told him about 4 weeks later.. Only after i started buying his clothes (begrudingly so) - because they are worth it.

Chip makes THE BEST photo-realistic clothing ever in SecondLife. And I own over 50% of his inventory and Im damn happy to pay it because its worth it. His seams are flawless compared to other people who charge $200 per item.

So anyone complaining about Chip.. your complaints only last about 4 weeks maybe 8 tops before you cave in and buy it after seeing others in his super high quality wear.

Also.. Chip doesn't mind helping new designers. Even those who comaplain about his prices because he is happy to give you the tools to be a competitor and only wishes you the best and hopes that you make things as good as he does.

Oh yea.. last but not least.

Chip really doesnt make his clothes himself. He has like 15, 6-8 year old kids in a room full of PCs surfing the web and photoshopping all day for him and lives with Kathy Lee Gifford.
