From: Kelly Linden And just to play devil's advocate: this way is much more user friendly for the users who will be changing these settings often. I'm not convinced it is more user friendly for a new user: the View menu just got 13% more complicated and cluttered for features that I'm not convinced an average user who had never experienced the old way would ever need.
well thats why several of us proposed hiding 'super user' kind of advanced (unnecessary but powerful, or powerfully informative) settings within their own 'area' of the debug menu... theres already a lot there, and theres no reason that 'culled' features from other areas of the GUI cannot get their own subdivision of the debug menu... and since the debug menu is hidden from 'the 95%' who will never use powerful/advanced features, settings/preferences there will be available to those who need them, and totally unobserved to the majority, who don't.. again the whole concept behind ui design is that the interface is simple and intuitive to pick up, and yet extensable enough to provide for advanced features and options suitable for longtime 'power' users who need/want them

I really don't understand how it could be more user friendly for anyone to have it in the settings.ini file. Why is it easier in there? I can see the argument about cluttering up menus. That's an argument to make, but usability? You have to log out, change a text file and log back in to change it. That's a huge pain. I'm very happy it's back in the menus, but I'm a little concerned if there are Lindens who think it's easier to change options through the settings.ini file.

From: Kelly Linden If I may be so bold as to quote myself:Additionally this may suprise some people but we, employees of Linden Lab, don't always agree with each other and have different ideas. Many developers don't actively participate in the forums. I like to poke my nose in every now and then, whether it belongs or not. When I weigh in on issues like this I try to post the general idea that caused the action on topic to happen. That doesn't mean it, or I, are always right. In this particular case I wasn't involved in the design, implementation or subsequent change any more than anyone else in this thread. I just had a little better view of the internal process. Yes, that's why an employee's opinion, not carefully prefaced as their opinion, can be confused with company policy or company ideology all too easily.
