This is a question to all Second Life citizens ;)

I am an artist who focuses on interactive works. I recently joined Second Life and my experiences in it led to the project I am currently involved in. This work focuses on avatars and our relationships with these virtual representations of ourselves.

All of us consciously chose the how to represent ourselves in this second life. Our choices vary. We look human, and alien. Our avatars are Robots, geometric shapes, animals, anything that our minds think up we make real as we take advantage of an opportunity that does not exist on earth, to chose how we look.

What I am wondering is why do we make the choices that we make? I am curios as to your thoughts on this subject. Tell me, why are you who you are?

My goal is to be the biggest asshole in Second Life. So far, I'm doing okay. I think I still have a long way to go though. Although I do know a few people who would say I accomplished my mission after only a few weeks of being here.

We're a reflection of our environment. What's scary, is that I was raised in a hall of mirrors.

I'm who I am because I can't make up my mind who I am.

The result is Multiple Body Disorder.

I'll try to answer your question as honestly as I can: If you may why do I wear a certain avatar, I'd say it's because that's what makes me comfortable. I tried gender-switching, I tried to wear non-human avs, but along the way I figured out that I was most comfortable being what I am in real life -- a pale skinned humanoid female :). I'm not a redhead in RL, though, nor am I six foot tall, or sport elf-ears. That comes from a combination of alternate personalities I took along the way before SL in mmorpg's. I usually played an elf of some sort -- I always played a female, and I often played a fighter/healer combo. My SL avatar is a strange mix of that my own sense of asthetic. My av is beautiful because she can be. But she's not ever been "normal" looking.

I am who I am because I can.

I do what I do because I can.

I say what i say because I can.

While most define their SL selves compared to their RL selfs (a valid comparison) The freedom that is SL is that you can choose to do so or not to so to ones content.

For myself It is less about being something I cannot be in RL, so much as being who I am to the nth degree..

I am Obic Malaprop because I care.

I strive to be unique. :)

Which is why my Phoenix is not for sale....... ever. ;D

But I am working on a new "public available" phoenix..... once the flexiprims are out. :)

I came to Second Life from another game that had a very strong community of role players but very limited tools for customizing your appearance. People really had to put some effort into their portrayal because the only thing that really distinguished you from anyone else was your personality. My characters there looked nothing like me because it simply wasn't possible given the game's technical limitations. When I came to Second Life I sort of imported my characters- both their looks and personalities- here, although I've only got a single active SL account.

So I have three or four distinct looks (different skins/hairstyles/shapes) and I play them differently depending on my mood. None of my avatar forms looks like me, but I think I'm going to change that. This morning, a friend requested to see a photo of me, so I finally uploaded a couple, loaded them into a couple of prims, and showed him... but I felt kind of silly being this tall dark redhead in silk and latex showing off photos of a short, fair, smiling blonde. I think it would be more fun to make that presentation as an avatar that actually resembles me. Time for a new skin and hairstyle... um and some more casual clothes. ;)

EDIT: Oy, I don't even know where to get clothes in SL like I wear in RL. What's the equivalent of Kohl's in Second Life? Or Target even?

I am... me... maybe not exactly the me I am in rl... few women in rl grow to 7'6" tall, at least not human ones... but still, the me I am on the inside. The me that would be in a perfect world, or perhaps an imperfect but slightly better than the real one one... if you get my drift...

... or something...

I like to think I am who I am in SL because of what I cannot be in RL.

I explore here because I generally can't there.

I socialize greatly here because text allows me to keep up with conversations, revealing the personality I might have had if my brain processed things a little faster.

I wear many different avs here.. Well, because I don't care much for the RL me, and thus like to get as far from that as I can, sometimes. And since sL's facial hair doesn't meet my standards, generally, I stick to furry and mechanical avs.

People tend to like me.. ..For reasons I can't fathom, but it feels nice.

I wish there was more creativity involved in my Avie's appearance. She is all sliders.

I had trouble with alpha channels when trying to custom-make my RL tattoo. When I applied the texture to my, then, pink and purple Avie, she had a big white square on her back. So, I made her all black and white. I won her flappy wings (*waves to Kim Anubis*) at a trivia contest. My RL tattoo:

We are both short; we are both female; and we have similar eyes, I've been told (*waves at Blueman*). Unlike Euterpe, I could *never* get away with head-to-toe leather; I could never pull off short-short t-shirts.

Oh, and sometimes I am a bunny. :D
