Same here, I usually have other things to do later in the day and I don't get to play as much as I'd like. I pay $9.95 a month to play and I feel like I'm wasting it because I'm not on as much as I'd like.

I liked it when it was every wednesday and things weren't as buggy.

Glad too see someone agrees with me :D

Also I run a sales buisness, and it takes away valuable time for me to have to wait for a update, when I could be making money...

Every week the same thing gets discussed ad nauseam. I'd call that complaining.

Updates happen. C'est la vie.

My guess is that the increase in updates can also be attributed to the fact that we've had 1.10, 1.11, and 1.12 come out practically consecutively. So, the downtime is justified; although I also agree that the hours are a pain.

And btw, the new snapshot feature rocks! Did you all know that it FREEZES time while allowing you to take multiple pictures?.. I'm still like whoa :O

Observations
08-09-2006 10:33
These are just quick observations going off of the Announcment forum.

Weekly update = 5hrs
Asset Server Problem = 30min
Brief Downtime = 30min
Emergency Downtime = 6hrs

This is a total of 12hrs for the previous week (unless i missed something)

Assuming also that this is non normal ammount of downtime this is 12 hours down vs. 156hrs uptime.

Perhaps Sl is out growing itself and is defo down too much, which i can understand even though its very annoying, grrrrrr.
I have just logged in at last and it told me to upgrade which i did cos of a new version, then it tells me i hav that version. So I log in again and it tells me again there is a new version, so downloading again. Fingers crossed it workes this time lol. Sl can be quite wako.

2-7 AM PST would probably make alot more sense.

I agree, but then we'd get all the Euro players complaining about the updates cutting into their in-world time. It's a catch-22.

I want to know what the public thinks, because this is what I think, I have played several online games similar to SL and I know they all did matience and everything, but to me I just feel that SL is down too often, most of the other games did their matience at 3 am and I notice when I try to log on it says SL is undergoing matenice, so I jsut wanted to get a feel of what other people think, is Second Life down too much?

It's down again?! OMGWTFPLXTHXBYE

The reason for that is not that hard to see Gothi, this IS something that is having a negetive effect on SL an many ways, and something that LL will have to deal with sooner or later. I read somewhere that they do plan for less updates and more tests soon, though it will remain to be seen exactly WHEN that will ccure, if at all.

But, most pll tend to get upset mainly because they feel that they are being robbed for time they pay money for, which IS frustraiting, as for many ppl we're talking about alot of money. And while many would call this complaining, the forums are also here for all of us, to express our thoughts and oppinions on different matters. Simply ignoring this whole update issue will not make it go away, and the sooner LL realise this, the better. Also, most of the people are not upset about the updates themselvs, but the long hours lost from SL, and all the downtimes and the new bugs that are generated by the updates, causing even more unstability, or at least that's why I've seen so far on the forums. This is the first time I've chosen to say anything about it, since I've been of the opinion that it's just the way it is, all I can do is to just suck it up, since it won't matter anyway. But there is a limit to everything, and so I decided, like many others, to let my opinion be known. If you feel like it's complaining, so be it. Just as me, you have a right to speak your mind.

But why does this matter show up in the forums every single week?
Simple, because ppl are getting sick and tired of LL's attitude towards the matter. Thats why they shout out in here, in hope of maybe, just maybe, some of the Lindens actually read some of this and take note of it.

Or at least, we all can hope, can't we?

Yeah they should make it have monthly updates instead of the annoying weakly ones. Then again the weekly ones keep things running more or less smoothly.

Damn Skippy Muffins.

Apparently with all the things that are broken or breaking within SL, it's not down often enough...

I'm not complaining. I am merely pointing out the fact that in a system such as SL, like death and taxes, updates are inevitable.

I mean come on... really... there's better things to discuss, like tonight's furry gorean slave auctions.

lol.. Darn.. I'm gonna have to miss that..

I just think that people should be allowed to bitch.. The title of the thread was pretty obvious what it was about.. I didn't bother bitching about downtime.. But the freakin lag lol.. Why do people go into a thread they know they don't want to read??

Personally I have stayed out of the child av doing grown man thread.. for that very reason.. ewww..

Every week it is the same, yes, a ton of "Grrr, downtime threads" Why not just deal with them, the same as having to deal with downtime.

anyway.. grid is up.. I'm out of here untill next week.. :)

No.

A game of this size that allows hundreds of thousands of residents to write their own code? I fully expect a weekly downtime.

You will find that the more non-tech people will think otherwise.

This has really messed with some peoples ability to play.. Some friends lag so bad they have to reboot the game at least 20 times a night.. and 5 of those aren't by choice.. They crash..

I used to crash several times a day, especially when streaming audio into SL. Then I got a new computer that could handle the game - I have not crashed *once* since. SL really makes a computer sweat, and if it is not up to the task, it will bluescreen.

The development plan for LL is a joke. For such a successful, thriving community it seems like LL is doing their best to kill it without actually closing shop. The downtimes and updates are a farce, every Wednesday is gone, I don't recall reading in the TOS that I agree to pay money to only access SL on certain days of the week. An update that's thoroughly tested or to fix major bugs is to be expected, but an update a week that bitch-slaps everyone who reports the REAL bugs that remain untouched is laughable.

If you want LL to get their act together, I created a petition in my signature, sign it and maybe with enough support it can be used as proof that LL need to stop and think for once.

No. ... yes...

We are given plenty of warning about the Wednesday updates. They don't last that long. In the UK I don't even notice them, grid goes down late aternoon, comes back up by the time I've cooked supper and got my child to bed. No problem really. And even if they were to move the scheduled update time, it wouldn't matter as long as we get a weeks notice.

Where it becomes a problem I think is when the system fails due the immense number of serious bugs. Bugs which are not being fixed because SL programmers are not properly supervised. In an environment where each programmer picks and chooses which work they'll do, the boring stuff is never going to be done! I've no bones to pick with letting programmers do what they want, that's great, but only after the serious work is in the bag. That's the real problem at Linden Lab. It reminds me of a nursery where all the toys are left out to be trodden on. It's a highly creative environment but surely it's time to pull in the reins a little and get down on those bugs.
