My point exactly -- I don't have a "real" CC - I use my debit card.

I don't know of any online provider -- in the US or ANY OTHER COUNTRY -- which does not take a credit card as a requirement of setting up a broadband account. So this argument, as far as I'm concerned, is absolute b*llsh*t.

Sorry Merlyn, look at my previous post.
No broadband provider in the UK asks if you have a credit card.
So sorry, your argument is bullshit.

Someone in Great Britian simply is not allowed to buy from Amazon.com US...unless they happen to own an American Credit card...which is rare.

That is absolutely not true. My British issued Mastercard or Visa is accepted anywhere in the world that yours is. What's more, I've bought many books from Amazon.com simply because they're not available from Amazon.co.uk.

Credit cards really aren't that inflexible.

Even while not supporting in ANY way the segregation of a whole part of the community (the unverified), better add a little piece of info. In most countries of the world it's pretty easy and absolutely unexpensive to get an hold on a VISA electron debit card. Those are accepted by LL. I use mine from Italy since when i joined back in 2004. No problems.
I actually use it all over the internet, both for online shopping and the accounts of several MMORPGs. Never had a single problem with it.

I do believe I admited that I was drastically oversimplifying the explination, yes? Not to mention, Visa and Mastervcard are american companies. You have an american CC...UK issued or not.

It all depends on exactly where you are, who has what agreements with who in your country, region, etc. Just because YOU have no issue accessing some american companies does not mean others do not have issues. You have proved nothing except that once again, you didn't understand what I was saying.

I just so love the insular "It works this way for me, so it obviously works this way for the whole world", crap.

Just forget it. It's pointless.

Zoe hon, remember.. never argue with a idiot.. they can't help their lack of understanding.. just pat them on the head and hand them another sugar coated dream. :)

Since it worked for them, it *must* work for everyone.. since everyone knows they are the most important person anywhere.

Er apologies, if you took that the way it wasn't intended. I assure you it wasn't meant that way...and frankly I don't think I deserved that. I merely pointed out that your statement about Amazon was wrong...and I'm now afraid to tell you that although Visa and Mastercard may have started out American companies, Mastercard is now a membership organization owned by the 25,000 worldwide financial institutions that issue its card. And my Visa card was issued by Visa Europe, a subsidiary of Visa international. But I *will* tell you because discussion is a two way thing...and I refuse to make inferences about your character simply because we disagree about something that's ultimately not worth getting upset about.

Have a nice day.

Just FYI this is completely untrue. I live in Japan and I only have Japanese credit cards but I have no problem buying from Amazon.com...

Ah, brace yourself. :D

Good post Dillon. You were right to point out the mistake about purchasing internationally.

That's what I thought reading some of the harsh replies in this thread. Sad that no subject can be discussed without degenerating into "I'm right and you are idiots" statements.

I'll also quote something I said a bit earlier:

From: me
For those who can't, LL definitely should put in place alternative modes of verification. But if you are over 18 and do not have a CC, you know that you don't fulfill one of the current requirements (Paypal aside) to be verified.

It's maybe not a choice exactly but more a personal circumstance that you can decide whether to change (just like you could decide to get broadband to play the game if you were still on dial-up).

Paypal looks to be a bit of a pain for UK verified accounts. So it's really up to LL to get that fixed and for users who really want to get verified and can't right now to see if they could get one of those cheap (or free in many cases) Visa cards that they can use everywhere to play SL. As I said, it's a personal choice to "upgrade" to meet the requirements, even if you don't like them.
