I apologize for the delay on this announcement, due in part to the forum downtime on Monday.

We are releasing a new version of Second Life at our normal time of Wednesday morning. Second Life will be unavailable Wednesday, June 28th, 2006 from 7AM to 12AM PT/SLT for the update. New client software will be required to access 1.10.5.

We encourage you to check out Preview in the meantime and see the new features 1.10.5 has to offer! You can download the special Preview software and get more information here:
http://secondlife.com/community/preview.php.

Here are the 1.10.5 release notes:

Release Notes for Second Life 1.10.5(1) June 28, 2006
=====================================
New features:
* Each resident's profile now includes a field revealing whether the resident has provided payment information to Linden Lab.
** The profile's "Account" field includes account status: "Resident" or "Linden Lab Employee" and, in the case of "Resident" status one of three status entries:
*** "No Payment Info on File" - account was created with no credit card or Paypal
*** "Payment Info on File" - account has provided a credit card or Paypal
*** "Payment Info Used" - credit card or Paypal on account has successfully been billed
** We plan to provide features in future updates to mark specific parts of the Second Life world (or allow residents to mark their own land) as accessible only to accounts with payment information.

Other changes:
* The "Report PvP Abuse" option has been removed from the Help menu
** Residents can and should continue to report harrassing PvP abuse via "Report Abuse" under Help
** Residents should provide as much relevant information as possible when filing Abuse Reports
* Residents explicitly banned from a land parcel cannot fly in that parcel's airspace, to a height of 768m
** Residents not explicitly banned, but not on the access list, can fly over the parcel at an altitude greater than 50m

* More categories have been added to the Places menu
* The Library is displayed at the bottom of the Inventory for quicker access to one's own Inventory
* Snapshots to disk are now taken with CTRL+` instead of just the ` key
* "Copy and Wear" now behaves identically to dragging a folder from inventory onto your avatar
** Existing clothing and attachments will be removed

Bug fixes:
* Transferring an island to a new owner no longer causes objects on group-owned land to be returned automatically
* The Open option is not displayed when the object has no contents
* PCI-Express cards should no longer give errors that AGP is disabled
* Corrected several error messages about incorrect driver versions
* The version number of an optional update is now displayed
* Fixed a bug that caused some objects to be missed by rectangle-select
* Fixed a display bug with transparent avatar textures in Upload Preview
* Doubled the space available to display the estate name in Region/Estate

Linux client fixes:
* No linux client specific fixes in this release

So. I like alot of it. I'm a little worried the Verif thing will cause segregation amonst SL, but it's something we'll have to wait and see.

they missed one that I hope they put in in the near future...

*** resident's access lists will go inactive when they are offline however this will not effect explicit ban lists.

Would be a good addition for sure.

The library moving to the bottom is a small thing I really like. I never use it, so it's always annoyed me having that come before my stuff.

The first time I read this I thought "hey, everyone's going to be naked the first time they log in to 10.5!"

SL "Darkies"

I thought this too.

Very ironic since LL previously removed the rating system because it was "unfair" and causing tears to those who were negatively rated. wah! ;)

The idea then was that we were to be an all-equal, all sunshine and rainbows kind of crowd that disn't "judge" each other.

Now we will have "regular" players and "other" players who according to Robin's posts will be increasingly marginalised (on purpose!), as more releases come out. Ha-ha :D

They won't be allowed in to certain places or there, they might not be allowed to sell things or participate in certain programs etc. How hilarious and ironic that the big "solution" that they have come up with is to create a sort of race of "SL Darkies."

(Edit: actually since it's based on money, it's more classist than racist but same diff.)

I want to know how anyone can do anything in SL without a few $L? Once they buy $L (presumably from Lindex), they become verified, right?

I don't think this discriminates against a class of player at all. Anyone, freebie account or long-time resident, can be verified the moment they provide identification to the Lindens. The ones left out will be those who create an avatar for the express purpose of doing maximum grief for a day or two until a Linden bans them. Meanwhile, their unverified avatar will not be able to get into some areas -- which really doesn't break my heart at all.

Money trees and the NCI "virtual stipend" can provide a very few L$ to buy cheapies and freebies with.

Hi there to all!

I'm just a bloody newbie, used the creation of a free account with nor credit card or paypal information. With new release, i fear that i can not enter every area that i like (at least those with the "payment info" -restrictions).
What happens, when i buy now $L for, lets say, 10$ (or €, in my case)? I have profen that i have a credit card. Will my "payment info" then be changed?
Hope that someone can answer this.

Thanks in advance!

What stipend?

And the money trees are already farmed, sorry. Maybe LL can come up with a way to track how long a newbie spends checking money trees -- anyone who spend 4 hours putting together $50L ought to get a free pass, IMO :)

I dunno Cin - to play devils advocate -

If your given the option not to put your payment details in - many wont - just for the simple reason that providing payment details to a company who isnt going to bill you is giving them information they do not need.

I dont give Cashiers my phone number at stores when i am paying with cash either.

In addition -

It is possible to survie in SL on next to no money - depends on what you want to look like =-p

And the Residents Moderators will use account status in making forum moderation decisions, just as they are already doing with account age and number of posts.

NCI and some other newbie areas offer a donation-funded "virtual stipend" for a limited time after a resident joins. It's only L$10 mind you.

What about people with private clubs? Surely you don't expect the landowner to be logged in 24/7 just to ensure the exclusivity of his/her property?

No, I think people just need to be smart about how they use their access control. If you've got a little shack sitting on your first land that you NEVER VISIT, leave the land open, goddamit. If you've got a members-only establishment, or you have several known troublemakers that you need to keep away, I think it's perfectly okay to maintain those access/ban lists regardless of whether you're logged in.

5 million people have given their card info to blizzard. not only did they pay for the box of cd's they also paid monthly subscriptions.

I played wow for around 6 months - I don't believe it has a shelf life much longer than that for most people. SL however is free with no monthly subscription and has unlimited shelf life.

If 5 million can freely give their info to blizzard, why cant a few thousand give theirs to LL?

For a large number of people it seems SL doesn't have unlimited shelf life :(
