Tough call. I like being able to navigate unrezzed builds. But some effects (particles in particular) just look terrible with the grey blocks before rezzed. I am gonna lean towards the "revert back to invisible" but it's a close race in my mind. Does this mean a locally saved image file of one's own choice or even one's own making, or just one texture supplied by the Lindens, which might be, say, black with a white outline, or bumblebee yellow and black stripes? |

Does this mean a locally saved image file of one's own choice or even one's own making, or just one texture supplied by the Lindens, which might be, say, black with a white outline, or bumblebee yellow and black stripes? - I never heard any complaints about the old texture when we had it, nor a big hue and cry for it to be replaced. - the "ressing inside of builds" and "bumping into things" argument is non-sensical in that this happens no matter what the texture used. - The majority of the people in favour of the grey squares seem to be middle aged gamers with fond memories of "Tron." - Some of those against reverting to the old texture seem to be new people who are mistakenly thinking that the old texture was "transparent." - Since it's basically an aesthetic thing, LL will *never* satisfy a significant portion of the populace no matter what texture they pick. The only real option is to have a user identified/preferred texture as suggested. If they dont have the server resources to allow people to chose their own textures or somethign they could go back to 50% transparent but allow you to pick the tint. 50% transparent black would be more noticeable and it woudl give torley at least the pink option. _____________________

I far more often find myself colliding (server-side) with a prim that hasn't rendered (client-side) than the other way around. At least with the haze texture, you could see out of the half instantiated build you found yourself trapped in. |

I think they should leave it as it is for people who don't care, but make the texture key changeable in the settings.ini file.

I prefer the new one since it makes it much easier to tell where you are in relation to the objects around you. If I had a preference I'd like to see things in wireframe until the textures rez. It would give things a more matrix kind of feel (even though I doubt it's technically feasable).

That'd be cool... wouldn't a texture of a green grid with an alpha background achieve that look? _____________________

That'd be cool... wouldn't a texture of a green grid with an alpha background achieve that look? no, sadly, because the green lines need to trace the edges. However... what about something based on the editing wireframe only green and simpler ie. solid lines? If there's time to mess with pixel shaded water there should be time to do this . I definately vote for this feature._____________________

Two locally saved image files, one for solid objects, one for phantom objects. So you would have a choice of "the default texture", not a texture of one's own choice, or some other texture, neither of which would necessarily be one that a person lilkes, is that right? _____________________

What I had in mind was that you would be able to specify: "E:\SL\watermelon.xbm" for the loading texture for SOLID objects, an "E:\SL\smoke1.xbm" for the loading texture for PHANTOM objects (including particles, avatars, and attachments). |

Well, I imagine you could do things that way, but that wasn't what I had in mind. What I had in mind was that you would be able to specify: "E:\SL\watermelon.xbm" for the loading texture for SOLID objects, an "E:\SL\smoke1.xbm" for the loading texture for PHANTOM objects (including particles, avatars, and attachments). Who gets to decide which locally stored textures one gets to choose from? While we on this general topic, there are things that can be changed about the SL program, such as the font size used in the script editor, which aren't readily apparent, not even after checking the viewerart.ini file and the secondlife.log file and other such low level sneaky tricks. The font size can be changed by setting values for variable names which were found by looking for strings in the secondlife.exe file itself. Is there such a changeable variable for the loading texture, and if so, what is it? Cuz I want to change it right this minute! _____________________

The idea being that you can choose the default, or choose any compatible image file on your system - including ones you have made - or downloaded from somewhere. So Chip, Aaron and I could create our own matrix-style texture - the Torlinator could use her watermelonny goodness, SuezanneC could select bumblebee yellow and black stripes, and Enabran could just select the default.
And you could select the default or a custom image for phantom objects - and select the default or the same image or a different image for non-phantom objects. |

I like the 'choose your own texture' idea. It could be added to the settings.ini file as a key. Simply replace the default key with the key of any other texture and you're good to go. Best of all, it's not yet another menu option or preference option, and it only affects the person who chooses to use a different texture.

SuezanneC could select bumblebee yellow and black stripes Not so. Then how can you dispute the finding of the log? I do not dispute it. I merely state that it is wrong. Oh? On what do you base that statement? I know the captain. He is in-- Please instruct the witness not to speculate. Lieutenant, I am half Vulcan. Vulcans do not speculate. I speak from pure logic. If I let go of a hammer on a planet that has a positive gravity, I need not see it fall to know that it has, in fact, fallen. - I do not see what that has to-- - Gentlemen, human beings have characteristics just as inanimate objects do. I could no more choose a bumblebee yellow and black loading texture than I could choose to fly in the real world just by flapping my wings and wishing real hard. _____________________

all grey and white textures should be replaced with an animated gif of the bananaphone. dancing.

Who gets to decide which locally stored textures one gets to choose from? I don't see any reason LL should make the mechanism any less versatile than that. |
