While they have certainly made some improvements to texture rendering in the past few updates, major problems still persist. One of the most annoying aspects of it is the very unattractive grey texture with a white border. The previous nearly transparent texture was not as visually distracting, and still indicated something was rendering. Do you think they should revert back to using that texture instead of the current sea of grey?

No preference. Although, I will say that the grey is no bid deal if it goes away rather quickly. If you have persistent non-rendering textures, the annoyance may not be which one, but that it isn't rendered period.

I prefer the new texture, as it actually lets me navigate even if the world hasn't completely downloaded for me. It's not pretty, but it's not supposed to be.

I disagree, the solid grey makes navigating through unrezzed vegetation difficult. The 50% alpha grey texture from before was fine. However, leave it to LL to fix something that ain't broke. ![]() _____________________

In a reactionary sort of way, having an ugly loading texture makes you want textures to load all the faster. I've been vehemently opposed to all so far, including the current one, on the principle that: they don't have green outlines and pink innards. My dream one would look more like this okay:
![]() But... seriously... I am very enamored with souvenirs. So, if anyone reading this would like to take home the previous texture (as featured in "the Great Gray Gridstorm" for ol' times sake or just for chuckles, please IM me.![]() _____________________

Why not add this to the debug menu?

While they have certainly made some improvements to texture rendering in the past few updates, major problems still persist. One of the most annoying aspects of it is the very unattractive grey texture with a white border. The previous nearly transparent texture was not as visually distracting, and still indicated something was rendering. Do you think they should revert back to using that texture instead of the current sea of grey? Lord YES!. The rendering time on my system is extremely slow nowadays, apparently due to the changes they've made in the drawing system. the time it takes for the objects to get drawn at all. This is a separate problem that needs to be corrected also in order for the program to be worth running. I hate the gray the white textures with a passion. On my system it often takes minutes before they go away. The map comes up blank, with nothing on it at all, fairly often; at other times the map terrain squares are filled with the gray and white outlines. Pictures in profiles show as gray and white textures. Collision sparks still appear as gray and white textures sometimes. I was trying to look at the contents of a box of textures by double clicking on the contents, as the instructions suggested. Every single textures window opened as a gray box with a white outline, and took long enough to change that I gave up. At least ten minutes with no sign any of the textures would every arrive. The changes they have made in the drawing system and texture delivery system have pretty much ruined Second Life for me. I would no longer recommend it to anyone as a result. It's no fun flying around and looking at the world as a result of the gray and white textures and slow rendering. _____________________

I know people hate the new gray/white thing, but it seems to help me to know at least what it is I'm SUPPOSED to be seeing. So I'm fine with it. (I'm not fine with how long it takes things to show up.)
I think the best idea is what Enabran suggested - something in the debug menu enabling you to choose the old transparent thing. If that's possible. coco _____________________

I like the new grey-and-white textures; they look especially interesting if it's a particle effect.

I don't mind the new grey texture on prims, and like Sig, I use it to tell what texture repeats need tweaking.
I do have a big problem with it also being the default in Appearance mode, though, as it seems to have increased dreaded Texture Corruption on clothing. _____________________

Tough call. I like being able to navigate unrezzed builds. But some effects (particles in particular) just look terrible with the grey blocks before rezzed.
I am gonna lean towards the "revert back to invisible" but it's a close race in my mind. _____________________

i figure enough people wanted a change that LL made the move in the first place... and there's clearly people here that like the new texture... personally i much prefer the semi-transparent way it used to be, but will take what comes

I think it should just be a nice clean solid white texture

I'd rather choose what texture to use - like the 'default media' texture for video windows.
After all, wouldn't it be satisfying to use "Impeach Bush" textures instead of the grey... and watch them one by one disappear from the view as your client loaded them? Lewis _____________________

Why not add this to the debug menu? Simple: x Classic Loading Texture good idea, I second this, and I really dislike the grey and white rects. It's not like the new textures actually do the job they were intended to do. I,ve still found myself flying into unrezzed prims or getting trapped in builds as they rez around me. |

Firstly, Cristiano, you should know that you spelled "I don't care" incorrectly. Its correct spelling is "pie".
Secondly - a few weeks ago someone suggested a client option to replace the default texture with a locally-saved image file - and to have this as two seperate options: one for phantom objects and particles, and the other for all other prims. This idea gets my vote. |

Does this mean a locally saved image file of one's own choice or even one's own making, or just one texture supplied by the Lindens, which might be, say, black with a white outline, or bumblebee yellow and black stripes? _____________________

The Second Life website used to have a statement on it that the world would appear by the time you turned to look at it.
They should make good on this claim; then it wouldn't matter what the loading texture looked like because you'd never have to see it. _____________________
