Well, I keep hearing that sitting is no longer the absolute defense against script push.

Used to be, simply sitting down would prevent a weapon from tossing you into orbit. Since the most popular weapon in the standard grief kit is a physical-push weapon, this prevented you from going sky-high.

However, I have been pushed while sitting on a non-physical prim. Not very high -- only around 300m -- but enough to demonstrate that there is no longer a %100 proof guarantee against such weapons.

Now, what I want to know is how this is accomplished, and what ways I can defend myself against this form of sit-pushing. (Does it only work against prims of a certain mass or lower, for example?) So I ask those with experience with SL to chime in with their observations on this, and see if we can't come up with a way to stop it.

I have seen one method that has been used against a friend of mine, which is to surround oneself with a giant invisible prim that has touch-to-sit enabled. If you happen to click near the griefer, perhaps in an attempt to alt-ctrl-zoom the camera, you will be unsit from your shield and instead sit on their object. It then simply unsits you and you are now vunerable for orbiting.

I've never been griefed ;0 It's all a matter of mindset...

Several questions first

1. Whose non-physical prim was that? Prims can be programmed to unsit you up 300m away (that's how short-range teleporters work). Prims can also be programmed to let you sit, then unsit you and push you anywhere.

2. Whose land were you on? A landowner can force anyone on his property to unsit.

Agreed, somedays people can do things to me that make me feel griefed and on other days people can do those same exact things and I find it just hilarious.. so its really on how you take it.. or how busy you are when it happens :P

If there is a push script, why is there not an AV attachment/script that negates any push scripts coming your way?

1. It was an object I own; A custom sit-shield that I wrote. So no chance that I was forced to unsit by someone else's object. I suddenly appeared 300m in the air while still sitting on my shield. (I use the term "shield" in the fact that my scripted prim lets me move around when sitting, so it's not just the usual rez-a-box-and-sit sort. Possibly why it worked?)

2. The land was owned by the person who was being attacked. She froze the griefer, and we were standing all around, oogling this particular post-6/6/06 species of SLitizen when he managed to escape the repeating freezings and dropped something that orbited everybody except those who were using sit-shields.

As for the assertion that griefing wasn't involved -- This person came in and started shooting at people randomly on a private sim that has nothing to do with combat, when asked not to do such a thing. It was pretty clear cut. Anyway, that's not the topic for this thread. I am curious about how to avoid the methods used to exert possible push upon non-physical objects.

I don't know if this will help. I have noticed that while my avatar is sitting and I'm moving my camera about I sometimes cause him to unsit spontaneously. I have not been able to identify exactly what caused it.

It only seems to happen when I'm moving my camera about while near the avatar, it never happens when my camera is farther away. So my suspicion is a bad click is causing the unsit (more like un-sleep).

So far it's only happened with the bed. I don't sit very much since I'm normally busy testing stuff, hence standing.

If this was yesterday, I am sorry. I was watching as my little brother destroyed lusk wood. I think that is what you are talking about, he got me perma banned, now I am trying to get my account back. I'm not letting him play anymore when I get my account. Sorry for all the trouble he caused.

Good for you, your little brother should be smacked upside the head a few times with a blunt object.

Seriously though.. LL is quite clear on account responsibility.. the "little brother" defense won't work here and few will show you any sympathy. If this DID happen to you, apologies are in order, but your account was not kept secure enough and now you're banned for it. If this is all bullshit (as most will think it will):

GTFO MY INTERNETS!

Sry for the possibly nasty tone - it's not intentional.

If there is a push script, why is there not an AV attachment/script that negates any push scripts coming your way?

There is no function or setting that specifically makes you unpushable. Sitting makes you unpushable as a side effect, but there is no way to get just that effect on its own. Anti-push scripts have to wait for you to get pushed, then try to move you back. They're laggy (because of how often they have to check), not robust (because the best way to move you back depends on how far away you got knocked and whether you stayed in the original zone), and ultimately futile because the griefer will just make his pushing script auto-RE-push you every time you come back.

Nope.

Also, the "someone else was using the computer at the time" defence does not work because bans are keyed to account and not to user. That means once an account is banned, it doesn't matter who was the owner. It's banned.

Aodan hit it pretty much on the head. That account and everything you had on it is now totally gone.

The only thing you can do now is make a new account and be more careful next time.. :o

That's just it. I didn't unsit -- One moment I was on the ground, next I was still sitting on my sit-shield, but hovering around 300-ish meters in the air.

I already outlined one potential method used to get around sit shields above. A friend discribed clicking near someone who was orbiting people and then suddenly unsitting from his sit shield and being flung into the air.

This, I believe, is something different.

I'm perm'd. I can't access second life on my computer : / To bad they didn't even give me some kind of warning ban, I am a newbie and all. It was just a mistake, but I guess it serves me. I'm not really sure if it's perm, it just says you can't access it from your computer. I had second life for no longer the 2 weeks

We'll need more info to verify this, if indeed the griefing is the cause at all.

Hence my request for more data.

I have seen references to "sitting is no longer %100 defense against pushing" in the forums, so I'm sure I'm not the only who has seen this.

Newbie or not, one has to be careful. Something as severe as what was described goes way beyond a warning. It's like giving a warning to someone who waltzed into a party and sprayed everyone with a vulcan cannon. It doesn't merit a warning because someone who does that does full well know what he's doing.

One of the first things I did before entering SL was to read the Terms of Service and the Community Standards. I really took the time to read everything before even my first login. So on entering I was very well versed with what was and wasn't allowed.

Furthermore no one has ever touched my accounts in any game and I've never revealed my username and passwords to even my closest friends.

It boils down to caring about your account. All the reading and the password privacy are just part of keeping your account good.

But that's water under the bridge. You learn.

Isnt the fact that Your scripted prim allows you to move the next logical step in figuring out why you were pushed? Unless you mean edit and using the position function then its highly logical that this is the cause of you being able to be pushed in the first place. Seems the logical thing if these "sit-sheilds" allow movement then that is why.

Hmm.. come to think of it, I was using a dance pad at the time I got unseated and orbited. Maybe any prim that allows movement of any sort causes it? Hmm.. looking at that moment, the ones sitting in chairs didn't get orbited, just those on the dance pads.

This excuse is more common than: 'My dog ate my homework.' If it really wasn't you I still hope you don't get your account back for being stupid enought to let anyone else use it.

I don't have much symphaty here. There are so many ways you could have stopped it, starting with "Not letting him log into your account". The fact that you say you "Watched him do it" was doubly damning, if you saw him whip out a gun in lusk, why not reach down and shut off the computer?

No, dude you're fscked. And you did it to yourself.

If you ever find a way on again, keep a better watch on your "little brother."
