LugRadio interview

I just finished listening to Cory's interview about the linux client, open standards, and open sourcing the client and server (someday/eventually) on the LugRadio podcast. Really great stuff. Check it out.
http://www.lugradio.org/ Latest show I'm an excellent driver 16th January 2006: Season 3 Episode 7 : 89:17 Show summary: Jono Bacon, Stuart Langridge, Ade Bradshaw, and Matthew Revell talk about Linux and whatever else comes along, including: * How can we get artists and designers involved in open source? (1.25) * The team talk to Cory Ondrejka of Linden Labs about Second Life... (16.35) * ...and then talk amongst themselves about it (41.00) * Belief in open source: is there enough faith that free software can really produce the right stuff? (46.30) * Your emails! (68.23) |

Honestly I can't wait to see the kind of performance the linux client produces. Watch everyone migrate to linux just for SL because it achieves 20 - 30 fps on budget graphics cards. lol With video cards, it's actually a bit worse ![]() From what I remember, reading in an article, ATI's drivers are somewhat faster under Windows than Linux, and yes, it's a noticable difference. With NVIDIA, things are better, though most of the tests the Windows driver won by a bit, but in some others, the Linux driver was faster. Anyone might have URLs to those articles (I forgot where I read them). _____________________

Haha, yea i get that. But does that mean we get a waving prim or cloth? Or will this only be a feature for the browser object? Frans, pasting a browser-rendered image onto a waving textured object is a pretty standard way to demo/test OpenGL rendering of something. Like, I've seen movies being played back onto waving flags before etc ... example code for making such a flag is easy to find and apart from looking nice it demonstrates conclusively to the audience that what you're seeing is 3D. Whether you'll be able to do that sort of thing in-world is anybodies guess. To start with, probably not .... they need a GL capable Gecko because everything that Second Life draws has to go via GL ... but perhaps later you'll be able to put HTML on one of the new flexible prims they demonstrated. |

Thanks Mack. I now have a big grin on my face thinking about the hamster dance website on a browser enabled waggling tail.
