For those who didn't look close, LOOK CLOSE.

Q1 2006: mono testing.
Q2 2006: API for IM.

boo-ya!

Oh, and the rumor mill tells me that part of the demo included Cory stating that "HTML is weeks away". Can someone confirm / deny this?

The slides that Hiro is talking about.
And what the hell is that waving in the wind like browser on the right in slide 1 supposed to mean?

Well, I suppose Slide 1 solves it... "Release openGL browser based on firefox in the next few weeks".

DING!

Haha, yea i get that. But does that mean we get a waving prim or cloth? Or will this only be a feature for the browser object?

Starting in Q2 2006, SL will begin switching from proprietary communication protocols to open/public protocols. Instant Messaging will be the first system revamped.

This is interesting, I'm guessing they'll probably use Jabber/XMPP for IM, would be really cool with Google's Jingle extension if it was made so you could right click someone and send a voice chat request. I wonder what other systems than IM they are working on replacing.

Shh... if everyone thinks the natural assumption, meaning "right after", LL may have to live up to the implications of its statements. ;)

.... I'm lucky I wasn't drinking anything when I read that. I would have shorted out my keyboard.

I want independant 'browser' prims and a 'collaborative' prims. I want... prim faces that accept static HTML code as if it were a texture. I want some styling options on SetText.
I want.... the ability to combine prims to make the biggest wall of pron the grid has ever seen.

Signs in the street that say where you’re going
Are somewhere just being their own..."

Heh, this doesn't at all surprise me. Although, I was expecting it later rather than sooner. Open Source development is essential for this kind of environment. The only thing I tend to be wary of, it opens new doors to potentially dangerous things. But all in all, its all good news to hear. I have no further reason to be sticking with the memory/processing hog of Winblows.

It only makes sense to me, Linux is a development platform of an OS, and Second Life is for developer content, put two and two together no? Sure as hell took them long enough though.

Well, since server-side they use Linux, MySQL, Apache, Squid, have pretty standard XML-RPC implementations, and their web servers use Ruby on Rails or DRUPAL for content management, and are now implementing Mono on top of that, so, I guess they're not exactly unfamiliar with public/open protocols...

Implementing IMs under the Jabber framework is the way to go ;)

OpenCroquet and Virtual Universes both use Java to accomplish cross-platform use.

That is not true, at least with respect to OpenCroquet, which is implemented in Squeak, a dialect of Smalltalk.

My apologies, I stand corrected. I thought that Squeak, implemented over Slang, was encapsulated on top of Java, since for some reason, the last time I tried OpenCroquet, I had lots of Java thingies popping up here and there. It was definitely a coincidence, since the documentation clearly states that OpenCroquet is developed on top of Squeak.

Sorry for the misinformation :-P

Honestly I can't wait to see the kind of performance the linux client produces. Watch everyone migrate to linux just for SL because it achieves 20 - 30 fps on budget graphics cards. lol :D

(yeah I know that probly won't happen, but from my experience Linux handles system resources better then Windows if setup properly)

I myself being a Linux user running Wine to play SL, but it has it faults changing clothes or skins seemed to get messed up. So I have to boot into windows to fix it.

I will be more than interested in being an Alpha or Beta tester when they do come out with a Linux version, I know I will be one happy camper.

Even a 10% performance boost would be awesome for many ;)

yay! I for one, welcome our new open source SL leaders. ^^

I run SL under emulation in linux as it stands, I will SO happily do testing for an sl client on linux. :D

If SL implements jabber for ingame IM's, and given SL's use of out of game communications for things like slexchange, think we'll have built-in support for google's googletalk, aim, msn, and yahoo access? :D

Person to email is Cory for Alpha testing -- cory@lindenlab.com, I fired one off a few days ago, although I havnt got a response yet (he's probably on holidays still.)

I cant wait to see this come out though - doing the Cedega/WineX3.2 dance every time patching is required is a royal pain. Plus things like alt-tabbing in and out crashing SL isnt something I'd like to have to endure much longer. :)
