I saw that it was different for a bit, but now it's gone back to how it was before.

Gah..... they changed it back!

Basically the map was gone, there was a big picture with lots of avatars on it all across the screen, and the "residents/online/cash spent" box was on the top right.

I preferred it actually... the map always takes so damn long to load.

I think Lewis may be referring to the 'next great idea for a front page' which I also saw briefly.

Sorry, no screenshot, but it was about 50% full width image, a few buildings, looking a bit like a Wild West mainstreet - quite appropriate these days I thought - with most of the usual suspects posed across the image.

AND - a HUGE 'Join here - it's FREE!' button underneath the image. Don't hold me to the exact wording, what I've quoted was the essence of it though.

My first thought on seeing that? 'Hmmmm, someone's truly desperate to hit a number...'

Have I got that about right Lewis?

Pretty much yeah.

At least all that crap about "SL in the media" which is all economy based, and the article about Anshe Chung was gone.

We have to advertise SL more widely and not just "come and make money" if it is to ever hope to survive. My group, the Campaign for Real Advertising Potential (C.R.A.P.) plan to promote diversity in advertising at all opportunities.

Agreed, it was pretty nifty looking. :) I never have liked the map much.

You can still see it if you log out of the web site. I just went to the site in another web browser and the big central image was there, with JOIN FREE on the right side.

Odd, it was definitely underneath for me, maybe someone's been demoing alternative layout ideas? But WHY online? I mean, I KNOW they have their own intranet... *shakes head*

The only thing I noticed was all the page titles were wrong.

They start with "Life:" instead of "Second Life:" probably by the time the grid is back up we will have a new website also? They have done that before.

Hey lewis, there is another bright shining moment of hope (maybe). I did that interview with now playing magazine last week and explicitely avoided talking about anything dealing with XXX content or viewing SL as a business instead of social environment. Showed the interviewer to Yadni's, NCI and the BDay event area. Gave some demostration of the building tools and effects with scripting. Talked about the Volunteer groups and the in-world education system. Hopefully having an article with publicity about SLs more 'enjoyable' aspects will encourage a different type of incoming playerbase. :o

Excellent job. Make sure you post a link when it's out, if you can.

I saw it too, and am seeing it now. You need to logout, then go to the homepage, possibly by directly entering the URL. It may also help to clear your cookies. (I used an alternate browser for this :-)

Doc, can you name them from left to right, because i have no idea whos avies these are. Looks like these are the avies that are used on the normal site on the left side.

Like Frans, I don't recognise most of them. I think the one on the far left is/was Ingrid's AV, and the one standing right back with the white face is Bub I believe. But as for the rest, please name them if they're the usual suspects so we're all wiser!

Always presume the worst, don't you :) Looks to me like it's the splash screen for those who come to the site who aren't already logged into an account. Those that are get the homepage we're used to which makes sense as it gives more info.

That makes perfect sense to me.

I've always loved Bub's work. :-)

I bet the "map page" had a lot more to do with people not registering (on my machine - which kicks ass - it hung for a few seconds) than credit card verification. It is clear that the full court press for full new accounts is on. Only one click available, and that's to JOIN; kind of like pr0n sites, hehehehe. (Don't forget, pr0n sites typically have been about a year ahead of the rest of the Web.)

Regards,

-Flip

Dunno the names - but they are all visually familiar from previous LL website images, except maybe the yellow guy with no visible means of support.

No - but when you see a page that makes no effort to encourage new signups other than that it's 'FREE!', the conclusion is pretty inescapable.
Ah well, I guess it's worth what you pay for it. :)

You really are quite comical. You can find fault with absolutely everything that Linden Lab do. No matter what, there's always something for you to gripe about, pull apart or piss on.

Keep on keeping on.
