Pre-1965 attire. Men without: long hair, tattoos, grunge facial hair and sunglasses. If I run into another long-haired guy with tattoos, facial hair and sunglasses who's seen too many Japanese cult movies and says he's into "goth", I'm gonna throw up. Cary Grant. Why can't men just look like Cary Grant? Pomada slicked hair, clean-shaven, business tie and vest, the whole prep caboodle. When at home, wearing slipover and smoking pipe. Conservative in dress and manner like real gentlemen used to be when there was such a thing. There are mob families in SL, although I haven't seen much actual 20-30's fashion anywhere, and none for men! Pencil skirts, gauzed hats and gloves - that's what I want for me! High-heeled boots without big clunky platforms! Chubby guys. I miss you... Wetsuits that you could swim in. Not the modern kind but a real shiny divingsuit of the smooth kind that Sean Connery could wear as James Bond. Thinking of a wide-chested guy wearing that just makes me weak... gosh.

My style is often that way.
Also there are designers who make such things. Check out Nephilaine Proatgonist, Vindi Vindaloo, Made Men by Rockwell Maltz. There are others too...

Monique, it's actually really frustrating to find guy's clothes outside the long hair/goth realm. I had to go way too long with the default hair, because I could barely find any guy's hair, and what there was either long or poorly made (thanks to the higher powers for Lashed!). Don't even start me on guy's shoes. They are almost non-existant, and usually are really ugly lumpy boots. I managed to find some good sneakers, which I live in, but I really long for some proper shoes. My dream is to find some nice pointy cuban heeled boots - I'd pay anything. I love wearing suits, but lack footwear to go with them. I think part of the reason there's not much for guys is that many don't concern themselves with fashion too much. They buy a couple of things they like, then live in it. Not me, I'm a total clothes-whore! It would be nice to see something different, wouldn't it?

I tried to make some 40-60s style clothing because that is a fashion period I really love, back in 2004. No one wants that stuff. Everyone wants to be a poptart mallrat hoe. I was in a store last weekend listening to 2 of the trampiest avatars I have ever seen were talking about their real life children that are almost my age and their grandchildren. So, if people my mother's age are coming in SL just so they can dress as slutty as they want to, there is no hope.
Fallingwater makes shoes that real women would wear, well done, tasteful, and not meant to be worn sliding down a pole.

My current outfit is a nice red fabric vest reminiscent of a victorian one over a black shirt (by ambergris), black dress pants (the pants of a free tux outfit, have a leather belt made into the pants, blend well with the top), dress shoes I bought off slexchange (forgot maker, prim leather dress shoes wiht walk replacement).. I often match hair to a outfit and today is no exception. I have the ponytail from Here comes toruble (vamped style for red in black) worn with no bangs to show a more serious look rather than 'ratty.' There is hope for people who want to see people outside of deep goth or mallrat or super bling..don't lose that hope. Personally though I may choose alot of black, I do use colors and accessories and don't do too much in the way of chains or bondage gear built in.. and ripped up clothes I refuse to wear..

I live in some boots from her. Her stuff's fairly expensive, however. I know Eryn Curie makes some bright '60s style things; I don't know if I'd place them as pre-1965, though. They're certainly refreshingly different from the usual SL stuff, though.

You're not the only one who's noticed this distinctive lack of midcentury style, so don't worry. There are indeed some guys out there who want their fashion statement to be something other than "Hey yo yo, I be a gangsta!" or "I've been to too many Tim Burton Movies." My clothing skills are improving, so you'll be seeing something distinctly non-thuggish in the near future. I'll keep folks posted

Try Little Rebel for clothes and Shiny Things for shoes. Nice vintage stuff. BTW, it's not nice to attack other people for their fashion choices. I can't imagine Cary Grant or Doris Day complaining here that someone else's style would make them throw up.

Hey if the shoe fits, I wear it. It's actually one of my favourite outfits in SL. I usually run around barefoot in jeans and t-shirt so sometimes it's fun to be naughty.

Yep, naughty can be good Usually my sl fiance is dressed well, whether it be silks (translucent ones reserved for special occasions privately and lifestyle gatherings) or normal clothing (typically jeans or other full pants and a top with a small amount of cleavage). On occasion she wears a naughty schoolgirl outfit, ot other 'slut' wear, but mostly for our own private time or themed events It does look good on you even as slutwear mind you My problem lies in people who wear slutwear all the time and look like prostitutes.. edit: makes me want to pull my pimpwear out

I love this forum, you always get a tonne of appreciative replies! And so many suggestions of where to go to find appropriate period and elegant stuff. A big hug to you all! From: Eboni Khan I tried to make some 40-60s style clothing because that is a fashion period I really love, back in 2004. No one wants that stuff. Everyone wants to be a poptart mallrat hoe. Obviously, there seem to be some people in this thread who wants it... Maybe I should also spend a few words in regard to this "slut" factor that keeps being mentioned (Jonas Pieterson, listen up! ) What I personally am after is decent period fashion for men (which, because it is vintage is inherently elegant), the same for women, and striking and extravagant female fashion. If you look how classy period ladies dressed also for everyday life, you'll find it's often actually way naughty (or "slutty" even though it shows only small amounts of bare skin etc (or maybe that was the precise reason. Women who wore tight dresses and short furs, but never left the house without wearing a pair gloves and a hat, what were we hiding? ). At least that's the impact this clothing has on me, while a pair of low rise denims simply leave me cold. Of course, people are free to dress the way they want, but it is when there is nothing to buy but trailer trash wear and "goth/punk" stuff that it starts being a real pain. From: someone My problem lies in people who wear slutwear all the time and look like prostitutes.. But Peter, it hasn't occured to you that maybe they are hookers?

Penny Loafers
03-27-2006 05:47
Monique. I'd settle for pre 1980 stuff. I have searched all over SL for some decent menswear. Either I find punk wear or very formal wear. How about something in the middle. Designers are you listening?
Made Man is very good. He made me a skin with NO facial hair and did not charge extra. Great vendor. Also, Barnesworth Anu has a nice collection of more moderate cloths. I think I've got everything he makes. I live in his v-neck sweater and tennies. Made my own jeans becasue I could not find what I wanted. But he has some really nice chinos.
Now shoes is a whole other story. How about some penny loafers, boat shoes, desert boots, you know the things that we have all had at some time in our lives.
Where are L.L. Bean and Landsend when you need them?

I can't believe no one mentioned Nicola Escher! She has a store in Midnight City, with some unique 1930's styles for women. I'd say Fallingwater for women's shoes. Although her's aren't modifyable, the styles are very tasteful and well executed. And try Barnesworth for tasteful men's shoes and clothes. Little Rebel has some nice 50's styles.

I was thinking about this thread, and what I miss in SL fashion-wise... on girls. I like what my girl wears... a lot. What I mostly see on and for girls in SL, however, I don't. I've always loved fashion, and I've always been more interested in women's clothes, when I draw, although I'm drawing life-size in charcoal, I'm reacting to fashion photography. What I miss is women wearing simple, elegant things. When I first got here, I was instantly struck by how horrible I thought women's shoes were. Horrible chunky platform things everywhere. I really like seeing a woman in a nice pair of pointy shoes, with a low heel (lately though I've started to see them). I miss what women wear in real life, funnily enough. Like when you see a beautiful girl in an understated, well made knee length skirt, with just the right shoes, and a top that plays on the shoulders, arms or back, rather than elsewhere. And you know how sometimes your girl never looks better than in jeans and a tank top? And nice accessories goddamn it! Not bling, but maybe a baguette bag. That's what I miss.
