Well, at least Swivelmedia isn't still showing the video of Stagecoach Island in SL:
http://www.swivelmedia.com/

The new video shows Stagecoach island in its new home in Activeworlds.....except it's a lie. The video footage is of the -as yet unreleased- Activeworlds 4 client. Activeworlds is still at 3.6. So you cant actually VISIT a Stagecoach Island that looks like this. Yet, the video trumpets: SEE YOU THERE!

I visited Activeworlds and asked how I could check out the existing Stagecoach Island. It seems that the existing Stagecoach Island can only be visted by beta testers. So you cant even visit a Stagecoach Island that DOESN'T look as good as the video....

Thanks, Swivelmedia. See you there.

Huh? I can view the AW 4.1 stagecoach island just fine.

The reason that the main AW universe is still at 3.6 is because they're still testing 4.1 to make sure it doesn't break existing content. It has, however, been running the "new" Stagecoach Island for some time now. Registration is free.

Edit: To clarify: You can't visit Stagecoach Island using the 3.6 browser. SI is running on its own seperated servers and everything, with a (still in beta) 4.1 browser.

Frankly I checked out the video and I dont see anything there that could not have been done in Sl. I know Eric from Swivel and have told him I think moving SI was just plain dumb. Lets me assure you from the onset Infinite Visions will never pull a sim we do out of Sl and move it to AW. We believe in, and are big fans of the power of the Sl Platform

I downloaded the client. Registration was free, but the client claims that theres no citizen with my name. Do I have to be a paying member of AW to try Stagecoach Island?

No, you don't. Stagecoach Island is completely seperated from the main AW universe, different accounts and everything.

I forgot how the registration process went though. Did it ask you to set a password? Try checking your email.

Did you use a long name with a space in it?

I used my whole SL name when registering, but once installed the login dialog's entry field was not long enough to enter the name I registered with.

Got the same message you got.

They may just be slow, it might work tomorrow.

At any rate, there is an email address in the email they sent to contact about problems.

Heh, no. I've been following AW for awhile now (since 2003), and SL only more recently (since the end of 2004). I usually just lurk around, but I saw the misinformation in this topic, and I knew better... so... I posted. :P

My citizen name is DeltaPHC (in both AW and Stagecoach Island).

Honestly that video doesn't even look as good as SL in most respects. Nicer draw distance and the sky looks better, but thats about it. The environment itself didn't look nearly as enjoyable.

I was an AW user waaay back in the day in 1999. Since that time, the "major" changes to the client were bilinear filtering and the ability to "script" "objects" to "move".

Note that the terms "script" "objects" and "move" may not necessesarily mean what they are intended to in the English dictionary.

AW is dead. Period. It was dying in 1999. There are probably less than 10k users still active (probably far less than that).

AW has always been know to try new and incredibly stupid things, while completely ignoring the sensible outcrying of their user base. I myself finially left AW in 2001, after I finially figured out that they were never going to listen to their users, and the program would eventually die.

Im kinda suprised that it even still exsists at all. This latest attempt for AW to make something of themselves is nothing suprising. After all, up to a couple of years ago, if you wanted to tryout a persistant 3d building virtual world, AW was really the only choice (yes I realise there are others, but they suck even more than AW does). Naturally, AW would see SL as being a major threat since it is far superior to their own program. So, it only makes sense that AW will try to emulate SL in every way possible, however there is really no need to worry, as AW's track record basically states that they are destined to fail.

I did download the client for Stagecoach Island, I was not impressed. It has since been uninstalled.

I feel sorry for all the residents of SL who had their work stolen, and I feel that appropriate action may not have been taken by some or all involved parties, but I do not know the details.

Sorry for the lengthy post, this is just my two cents.

What did happen in the end re: content hijacking? All I see from the end of the old thread is that people said that cheques were in the mail. Probably.

I wrote an article in the Herald about this after visiting Stagecoach last night, but I honestly think that their going over to AW was the biggest favor that's been paid to AW, possibly ever. As a former AW citizen, the moving vehicles that they got to work surprised me - that must have taken quite some bot work since all the "actionscripting" that you can do in AW is run through pre-programmed bots.

So apparently AW never did anything about cinematic camera controls either?

Apart from some parachutes that was a misunderstanding and being worked out, I dont recall anything. Sure there was alot of bad/no communications from all sides. People (the same people, over and over) are just creating drama.

The thing I see with this, is altho it might sound crazy, in some games, less IS more. I think SL may be over complicated for SI. AW is more or less, well, idiot proof. For instance, you just click things, and they work. I think overall AW is a better location for SI than SL..

Woah, too many acronims..

Its not that crazy. The more power/freedom/customization/etc. in the users hands, the less power (horsepower maybe?) on the backend. And by backend I really mean the client as well, not just the servers. Hard to have awesome vehicle races if all the participants are allowed to wear hoochie hair with 100s of prims. But if avatar customization was limited, those races wouldnt be nearly as bad. Maybe SL should incorporate 2 avatars: the normal one and a "lite" version that is used in sim requiring it and that had other restrictions to allow better fps. And when you entered those areas, your avatar would automatically change to the lite version.

Precisely. It's still end/home for moving the angle up/down (and for changing between the camera views - they override each other by default these days, but the moving the camera wins out - how logical of AWI, as usual), numberpad / and * for zooming in and out, and three views - chase, first person, and front. Lovely.

AW V4.1 supports vehicles natively. I'm not sure of the precise method they've used, but it's not 'bots'.

It's a clever lie. It's all done client-side.
