Greetings everyone! I'm new and interested in exploring the possibilities of using Second Life to promote controversial political platforms. How vastly has this been explored in the past?

Also, I'm quite intriqued and would like to learn more about buying and selling land.

Any insights?

Been done.

All it did was get a few thousand SL people very angry at one SL person.

I now wash my hands from touching that photo. :(

Don't even go there. Whisper the words "Impeach Bush Guy" on these forums and see the hate mail you get. Your very name is an invitation to a lynchmob.

Good one.

I suggest "Peace On Earth" as the controversial political idea to support.

Hi Impeach! Welcome to Second Life! :)

It has been done to a point - but you're talking about a broad concept that definately could be explored further.

What I'd do, is click the blue FIND button at the bottom of your screen, click the groups tab, and start doing some searches & see what you come up with.

At the very least you may find like minds to collaborate with :)

Good Luck!

I had no idea there was such a great Republican stronghold upon Second Life. It looks like I indeed have my work cut out for me.

To the contrary, he managed to piss people off regardless of political orientation.

It was a matter of personality and tactics, really.

its actually quite the opposite there are in my opinion many more liberals in second life then conservatives. most just did not agree with the way the impeach bush guy sent his message.
and many more believed that his motives were more financial then political.

for a history of the war on the Impeach bush guy do a search for the term Impeach I'm sure it will return many threads and give you some background on the subject.

Dear Impeach, search the forums and you will find numerous endless threads about public display of political signs and their evils.

Long story short, there's nothing wrong with being a republican or a democrat or rooting for world peace.

When you use your propaganda on huge 20x20 signs all over the SL landscape to grief people into buying 16sq meter lots for 2000 lindens a piece, you become leave the realm of political activism and enter the fab world of being an ass. And that's exactly what this notorious person did. Why? Because he could.

Harsh words maybe but the person that did all this, actually ejoys being called names and having fun at the expense of others.

So there, I have awakened the beast. Damn. Must Cleanse and smudge the room now.

The impeach bush guy was a troll though. He wasn't doing it for his political viewpoint, rather for the fact that huge ugly signs annoyed people. There are still a buch of such retards on SL. There is one living just outside waterhead, I for one fear what the newbies would think of SL once they stumble into that dude.

So in a nutshell, don't bring stupid RL stuff into SL and make huge signs about it. Even if someone supports your view, they would get annoyed by your ugly protest sign in SL.

Protesting: Limit to T-shirts or your profile, keep it PG. Make support groups and hang out with them, buy an island build all your protest stuff there then invite people to check it out. FTW.

I do think it's really sweet how everyone's handing out advice and warnings like this guy might not know, and how people are getting riled and defensive and letting the drama rise again, but does nobody else think that perhaps, oooh, I don't know... perhaps that name choice and post could suggest he's having a wee bit of a laugh..?

Just curious. I think it's nice to explain the history of the 'impeach bush' debarcle to a new player, even one named Impeach Quackenbush.

Surely, Impeach Q. is just an innocent new resident looking to engage in harmless political debate.

I think we should offer to help rather than assume the worst.

Impeach, all political nonsense aside, owning land in SL can be a rewarding experience. It may not be easy for the inexperienced, however, and I would like to offer you the opportunity to start out with a number of smaller sized plots....say in the 16-32 sq.m. range. Just to whet your appetite.

How can you have an enlightened discussion with all the avs wishing to discuss controversial political platforms on a plot of that size?

EDIT: Oh, right, you stack them all and make them sit on big signs high in the air, duh

Actually, that's kinda stylish. A whole lot more pleasing to the eye than the originals. Do you think you could build those and make them go "ONK!" when you click them? Or fly within range, or turn to face them? Or blink?

I imagine them going "ONK!". I think that's something Mr Devine neglected, that would have caught my interest. Or "WAAAAAAAACK" - but ONK is a much better word; covers both your duck and goose angles.

Agreed! Don't forget how much political balogna and general nonsense people will look at if you make it interesting or pretty. (Seriously.)

Welcome to SL, Quack, love the name.

A Quack in the Bush is worth 2 in the Hand. o.o
Whatever that meens. :)

In my personal opinion i believe SL should have nothing to do with the real world. Therefor RL situations and polatics aren't welcomed. I consider it an alien or fantasy world.

There isn't and half the population is not from the USA.

The problem was with what the erm.. ahem.. previous guy did to ...erm.. ahem...promote his impeach Bush stuff. Not the fact he wanted Bush impeached.

Oh, it has nothing to do ith supporting the current, questionably legitimate president, whose foreign and domestic policies are both nightmares. *cough*

It has to do with one resident who deliberately irritated people not only by setting up the aforementioned ugly signs, but by committing what was perceived as blackmail, by offering the small plots of land where his signs were located at exorbitant prices, which was taken as a thumbed nose, saying, "Heheh... if you want to get rid of the ugly signs, you'll have to PAY ME BIG TIME."

This did not sit well with residents.
