Yes, it's all our fault. Why play the game when we could be doing LL's job for them and testing it? Marvellous idea..

Hint:

1. Patch
2. Beta test
3. Release.

Too bad they keep forgetting step 2.

well what do u think the Preview grid is for???? LL does not employ enought people to test the patches on the scale that they need to be tested so theire for they give us full access to theire testing grid/s it's our responsibility to log into it and make sure that what they(LL) want to implement works right so if no one goes on to testno one hase to right to complain

Point being that is what a beta test is(be it for an upcomming game or for a patch on existing game) it is used to test on a large scale the new things that have already been tested internaly and performed well on a small scale

and also complaining is no good LL does not take the time(nore do they have it) to read the complaints posted by people who are just raving mad and not saying anything constructive. The way to report a bug is to A. use the bug reporting feature in SL(why do u think it's theire) or B. post a competent topic in the Tech suport forum not just a post saying how much it sucks but list and explain what happend and what u think could be done to fix it

Also one more thing it seems tome like most of the people posting belong on the teen grid since they are acting verry immature and not respecting anything L is trying to do(but for the record i have also sceen some sensable peple on these forums we just need more of them)

I looked at the information for DLing and accessing the test grid and found that access is restricted based on a users join date, which I feel is absurd.

The test grid is restricted to certain users only because it uses a back-up of the main grid...so if you account was created after they backed it up then it will not exsite on the test grid....the preview link is right on the download page and it is advertised with a MOTD at least once a week so people just have to start paying attention to what they are doing/looking at befor they start complaining

nothing wrong with that but then you can't complain if a new feature does not work cause u could have helped to make it better...scale is the issue here people not enought are testing new features therefore when they hit the main grid they are not really ready for it cause they where tested on a verry small scale

Darnit, I want everything to work perfectly with as little complications as possible. Even though that might be a tall order to ask for, there is nothing wrong with them taking a bit more time on testing and telling all the cry babies to shut up and wait..

why I don't preview
07-20-2006 08:32
I don't do preview anymore because whoever set it up is a moron. Yep that's right I called them names. I normally look at an over sight as just that, but I've reported and reported that when I do preview and have to change my video settings because of one reason or another, it changes my main grid settings.. I HATE THAT.

and my SIM isn't even on the preview grid so if I wanted to check my stuff I'd have to pull every bit of it out and set it up etc etc etc.. forget it..

If they ever put any of the stuff we've voted for that they are "working on" and by "working on" I mean ignoring it, I might try preview again..

Seriously, playtesting is a full time job for some people. Why should LL expect us to do it for free?

If they want to employ us as playetesters, fine, they should give us some incentive to do so.

Wow.

Here's incentive: an online world with very few bugs. Jesus, people tend to feel entitled to everything.

No one is expecting you to. But then again, if you are not part of the solution, no one should expect you to complain about the problem either.

If they want to employ us as playetesters, fine, they should give us some incentive to do so. But they have no reason to expect us not to complain about a product where there is no proper playtesting done.

Does ANY MMOG pay playtesters? I have done a lot of play testing, and never seen any payment except for certain in game items that some games gave out.

It is all well and good saying there is a test grid, but there is insufficient reference to it on the site, and quite how I stumbled over it I can not say, I just strayed across the link somehow. I looked at the information for DLing and accessing the test grid and found that access is restricted based on a users join date, which I feel is absurd. If they want features tested rigourously access to the test grid needs to be open to all people. I myself have been in several beta's of MMOGs (I was among the first wave of beta players on Puzzle Pirates back in 2003, same again on Astonia 3 in about 2002, also beta'ed and Helbreath International and more besides), and indeed still do beta on one that I subscribe to with hard cash, Puzzle Pirates used to have the problem of testing a patch in house, finding it worked okay for them, then as soon as it hit Midnight (the only mainline server they had at that time) bugs a plenty were found and patches had to be ruched in within 2 hours. The result of this was prior to the release of Cobalt and Viridian oceans they came up with Ice, a small ocean by comparison to its (now) 5 sisters, for the sole purpose of allowing us to really hammer the crap out of the patches. In turn the result of this was that it effectively put an end to exactly the kind of problem we saw yesterday.

For anyone who reads the Linden section of the forums they quite often ask folks to preview test. The folks who are really interested in improvements tend to read the forums. Most of your whiners never do.

like i have said before these things can react differently on different scales for example lets say that only about 500 users use the preview grid at any given time everything goes smoothly but then(when it goes live) 3000 players are now using it and the code reacts differently because of processing an depending on the item if some specific aspect of the code has changed they may not work at all so there is no way that LL(or any company really) can employ enough people to test these things on the scale they need to be and since it's an option to test LL does not have to pay you....if you want to be paid by them apply for a job with them....long story short.....i you want to help make SL better spend some time in the preview grid and help identify bugs

Here are the possible scenarios, some as suggested by fellow forum members yesterday, some already in place:

- LL takes 2-6 months to test and bring out an update, people moan because there are no new features they are asking for and ongoing bugs are still not fixed.

- LL brings out an update every week to fix bugs and add features, people moan because of a weekly downtime.

- LL provides a preview grid so that the new fixes and features can be tested by a larger number of people than just LL staff, people moan that they should be paid to do this testing.

- Update goes wrong, grid is down for a few hours but is fixed by a rollback. People moan that they had little notice of the necessary rollback.

- Update goes wrong, rollback is needed. LL gives people 24 hours notice, people moan that grid is down for more than 24 hours, as it would crash if a rollback was not done.

Yesterday on the forums affirmed my belief that people absolutely suck.

The problem isn't people not testing.. its LL ignoring the users, even if 9/10s of them are against something.

LL needs to be part of the solution and not the problem.

Okay, ladies and gentlemen lets remember a few things. First, we're dealig with technology, which in its history has been known to crash, fly into a wall, burn, etc, etc. Second, we're dealing with something that is based on the Inetrnet, the Internet you know it crashes, severs get mussed up, things happen, Third we're dealing with something that has been around since '01 if you include all of it's testing/beta phases, needless to say, SecondLife is still young when it comes to the Inetrnet as a whole.

When you have something that is pushing the envelope like this, updating and trying something new, and yes, being tested, something ALWAYS HAPPENS. There's a lot in SL that LL tries to accomodate for, a lot that goes wrong, a lot that they do a damn good job in fixing or finding a way to make it work.

So, please, stop saying that LL did not do enough testing, etc, etc, etc... new improvements break a few eggs, a few eggs were broken, some things happened - they aren't perfect, neither are you. RATHER than bitch and moan, how about when there's a crash, report the damn thing, and not just file a report, search on the feedback thread, find if someone is having the same issue, and maybe respond to it.

I wasn't necessarily expecting any actual cash payment. But as you note, other games give special unique items to those who volunteer to beta test for them. We get... a product that we have already paid for anyway. I'm having a little difficulty understanding why I should feel obligated to better test something I have alredy bought.

I gotta disagree here. The percentage of paying members is unbelievably small, imo. There are way more than enough people using this service for free to tap into for volunteer testing in large scale manner; a way to pay back a bit, ya know? It's like going to a free concert versus paying out for one at a private concert venue; my expectations are certainly different. I make a point to buy a food & drinks and a t-shirt or something to help defray the costs at the great free festivals around here. On the other hand, after dropping quite a bit of cash for tickets, the cost of refreshments and parking tends toget to you. SL isn't one size fits all; getting down on a paying member who is naturally going to be continually evaluating the value of the product they are subscribing to just doesn't seem justified.

However, its also a matter of scale...
the preview grid is tiny
some problems dont become apparent till the update is run on the full grid.

Yes that is a problem - if more people logged in to try it then it would not be big enough for everyone to try stuff out.

You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.

It is YOUR fault the grid is down now. YOU didn’t go test and find this bug. So stop your bitching and get your ass over to the preview grid and help test this stuff out!!!

I HALF agree with you there - but a company has an obligation to produce a working product and usually pay people to test their product before its released to the public.

Yes I agree that more people testing the preview would help - and I do go to preview sometimes to test new features I am interested in. However I do not have time and I suspect most people are the same - to go into preview every week and not only look at new features, but also test every existing feature to make sure it hasn't been broken by an update.

Besides, as has been pointed out before - sometimes bugs CAN only be spotted when rolled out on production servers - the preview grid will never be the size of the main grid and scalability issues are not tested properly on preview - cannot be.

I think that saying that its OUR fault that there were bugs because we didnt test them is just like saying that its OUR fault that security flaws are found in Windows because we didnt notice them before. We should not HAVE to test everything - LL employ (or should employ - I imagine they do) people to do that.

So yes - testing the grid is a good thing to do - but I dont think it should be our OBLIGATION to test the product for LL - a lot of us are too busy to do that and the ultimate responsability - as with ANY software - lies with the company creating it.

Just my 2p.

LOL - some people feel entitled to a working product that they pay for instead of having to be beta testers that are not paid to do the work.

IMHO the preview grid should be to see the cool things that are being worked on. Its called a "PREVIEW" grid because it allows us to preview upcoming features - and its a great thing to have.

Its not called a "BETA" grid and it is not the resposibility of paying customers to test it for LL - and yes, we ARE entitled to have a working product that we pay money for lol.

The whole bug report system is flakey and will make anyone cynical. It's main purpose seems to be to generate numbers and stats of what is crashing SL the most this week, not to actually go to someone to read and queque up for repair like the end user would expect. Leading to disapointment with bugs unfixed and an image of an incompetent service provider.
