Since P2P has arrived. Is there still a purpose the void sims hold to us? I think the reasoning behind the void sims were so that flying from point A to B would be easier. So, would in a business sense in order to save money, to get rid of them? do they still fill a purpose?
If so, what would that purpose be?

SWIMMING!!!!
Void sims are totally rocking for swimming or using vehicles - I love the hell out of them.. watching the sunset in gallinas from over 2 voids is the total bomb.
I learned a long time ago that flying / walking / jumping / driving in Second Life isn't for the function of getting from A to B - its for the sheer hell of it!

Watery voidy regions make the journey much much more enjoyable for me when the point isn't about the destination, but about what happens along the way.

P2P rocks when I just want to click and go. I support it fully. Void sims are good for low-lag "old fashioned" travel in planes, boats, subs, or driving under water . I'd like to see more void sims. I'd like to see void sims filled with land instead of just water. To digress a little bit: Even though I fully support the elimination of telehubs in favor of P2P, I do think it would be pretty cool if LL had large swaths of void water/land sims you could not teleport in at all. A place where there were remote places (islands?) that you could only get to by hiking/boating/... That would be cool. HP

Me too. I'd like to see grassland plains, deserts, tundras, more swatches of expanses to walk across... even camp in, perhaps. There really hasn't been a Linden camping ground since De Haro... Rickard Roentgen explained to me that there are current technical limits preventing more elaborate things, but even bare land to rest my hooves on would be nice. And then walk on!

scripted navigation of non-avatar objects. I'm really surprised hearing this from you, Einsman ... you're fairly script-savvy

I know i would be *very* unhappy to lose my amazing view of the water void sim next to my little getaway, not to mention less lag. (Even more amazing now with water ripples, sunsets just rawk.)

Why wouldn't there be a purpose? What, because of P2P people will stop moving around the grid? On the contrary, I'm far more likely to explore now!
Don't give LL the idea of nerfing yet more features, for Christs sake. They take out more than they put in these days.

Speaking of, where's the "Add Landmark" button gone to nowadays?

From: Torley Torgeson Speaking of, where's the "Add Landmark" button gone to nowadays? At a guess, since the default for the newly implemented p2p was 'tp anywhere you like' until landowners start specifying otherwise, and since the landmark implementation has always been hopelessly broken (or a great hack, depending on which way you see it) in that it overrides any and all land owner permissions, they probably just nerfed the button so less people would find it and set landmarks that let them enter private property and estate sims forever after

Those void sims are a godsend to navigating by air, and for autopilot algorithms that don't need a way to pathfind around them anymore. Are the void sims hurting anything by being there? I imagine they raise land values a bit on neighboring parcels-- who wouldn't like the LL equivalent of a wildlife/viewshed reserve next door?

LL should monitor traffic in the void sims and make the decision based on that.

I'd really like the sea the "big sea" void region all powered by one really good server. There are about what, 20 sims in there? Then vehicles wouldn't have to worry about border crossings (as much) and I think you'd see some fun events held there. As it is now, the border crossing problems in the area make it a hazard to true navigation.

-Flip

I guess the question should really be, what do the void sims hurt? They serve a purpose to bridge the gaps in the map. If we got rid of them, what benefit would there be to the world? A USD$0.01 savings on our monthly fees or something? lol

Totally agree. These spots are the closet thing you can get to a wilderness prserve. I especially love Baffin. Great place for hoverpodding! And sailing.

Now that you can swim in SL the void sims rock... Ferran and I went on a long mainland swim which included some void sims. First thing to get me back to the mainland in quite a while.

Void sims are brilliant from two points of view:
1) They make sailing the Tako wind powered sail boats over great distances possible, and, with the new ripply water the effects are something to behold!
2) The view from waterside sims, like mine, was improved beyond measure when they were introduced, with further improvement with ripply water!
Bearing in mind the void sims are recycling obsolete server hardware and improving the 'immersion' of SL, the suggestion they should be removed as 'of no further use since P2P' is nothing but trollish mischief making in my opinion.

How about real sims for the void?
12-16-2005 08:49
Personally, I'd like them to have permanent floating void sims. Any place there's no sim now, if you move into it, it'd let you... it'd keep running you on the original sim for a few meters, then hand you off to an available void sim. Maybe let estate owners disable this on specific sides, so places like the dAlliez islands would still remain islands. Or even better, let estate owners specift the certain sides are "void only" and travelling across that border would take you to a common "void sim" that only lets you return to the sim you came from.
LL has some kind of code like this already, because when you go into the space sim you still look like you're over the sim you came from.
