This looks so great ... sound editing is superb. Fantastic work!

... I will say though, the Conan O'Brien-esque mouth dubbing screams out for Linden Lab to upgrade our AVs with voice -> lip syncing.

Amazing job. That was incredibly well done. I especially loved Jimmy's brilliant texture work (as always). Congratulations to everyone involved. Bravo!

"This content requires the Macromedia Flash plugin"

And I'm pretty damn sure it is installed on my Safari browser  v7.0 r24, precisely.

I've got the exact same problem as Jesrad. Any way we can get a Quicktime version?

Apparently you absolutely need the v8 flash player... I was able to view the movie after updating it.

It was great, the people involved deserve a pat on the back. Very good job. Very interesting. Would be really cool to see a lot more of things like that.

That was great! Really well done to everyone involved. I can't help but giggle slightly at the mouth dubbing due to Conan O'Brien :p

visemes
03-11-2006 10:26
So, when are we getting the "viseme" mouth dubbing tech that we saw in the flim? :)

Visemes (according to the reading I've done) are doable in SL. The technology takes voice input (we would need voice in SL ) and uses the input to display one of 13 "visemes" (mouth positions).

In the film, it was used to display prerendered Quicktime movies of mouth positions. It might look more realistic if it displayed actual geometry instead, perhbaps using vertex shaders or the upcoming geometry shaders in DirectX 10.

Ahh that worked, that looks awesome, it's very hard to believe that THAT is SL!! It's a shame all of SL isn't built and textured as good as in the video hehe

Gorgeous work from top to bottom. Hopefully this movie will earn Second Life some major clout in the Machinima world!

Yes, and then when they come streaming into Second Life to do it, they'll realise that they can't do the lip-syncing  Showing the system off with features that can't actually be used seems pretty stupid to me.

Having said that, yup, the video is great and it's obviously had a large amount of work put into it.

false advertising?
03-11-2006 11:07
I don't expect the video will be used to promote SL, since the video contains features that don't yet exist in SL (mouth movement). I think the video is just supposed to be an example of using SL to produce machinima and the mouth movement comes under tha category of "special effects." :)

It would be dodgy for LL to use the video as promotion for SL. Maybe with a tiny disclaimer at the bottom of the screen: "Some toys not for use with some sets. Doll does not really fly or talk. Filmed under special lights. Do not attempt at home."

:)

Read the press release:

From: someone
...a machinima film based on the cowboy poem "Silver Bells and Golden Spurs" and created entirely within Second Life

From: someone
"Filming 'Bells and Spurs' proved that the only limit to film production in Second Life is your own imagination," said Eric Call

From: someone
To encourage the growth of the machinima industry within Second Life, new residents who sign up with the machinima promo code -- MACHIN -- will receive a Machinima-Maker kit with all the tools they need to get started making films in Second Life

This is all about promotion. They're wanting to get people in-world to do Machinima. Yet, they've done something that can't be done in-world right now. So yes, they are being stupid.

But then, according to an article with Cory recently, web browsers and RSS in-world are commonplace already. I guess I must have missed them.
