Why oh why can't people learn how to use sandboxes so as to not inconvenience others?
I've just spent about half an hour traipsing round a dozen sandboxes trying to find a quiet empty spot to test an elevator/teleporter system that I have been making for a friend.
Each one was the same, entirely useless, and I wondered whether people would agree that the following standards should apply when using sandboxes.
1) Before you leave, clear up your junk!
As you aren't supposed to sell anything in a sandbox, there's no benefit in leaving things for people to purchase there. Clutter makes it difficult for people to work, especially if you are needing to camera around a bit to see how things look.
2) Don't rez anything on or near the landing spot.
People will appear right in the middle of it, and may either disturb you or get stuck in your build, neither of which are helpful.
3) Vehicles, yes they're fun, but be considerate.
How many times have you been hit or bumped by someone with a vehicle buzzing round aimlessly in a sandbox? There are road networks about (one goes past my property in Rosieri and goes for quite a way in both directions), so why not use those to explore instead of just whizzing round a sandbox?
4) Look... but don't stare
Sure, part of the fun of sandboxes are seeing what others are building, but the amount of times I've had people just stand there looking at what I'm doing, then start bugging me for a copy... it's not finished, you can't do anything with it, so there's no point!
It just irritates me that people don't think of others. Sandboxes are public spaces, for everyone to use, so why not think of those who wish to use it as well as you? I am working on a vehicle project at the moment, which is around 40m long end-to-end, so I need a lot of space, which I don't have on my own land right now.
Should we have a set of rules to govern conduct in sandboxes in addition to those in the rest of the SL grid? I think yes, you may think otherwise... discuss.

That wasn't quite what I meant... sandboxes are provided for public use, for the benefit of all residents. I do actually plan to get a 'low prim' island to play with in a few months time if everything falls into place, but the point is that you should not really have to pay so much money simply to be able to do what you should be able to do for free in something provided as part of what I pay monthly for the privilege of being here. Lewis Unless you know of a land baron renting out low prims as singles, you can't buy them that way. They come in batches of four for the same price as a regular island. And as vocal as you've been crying out against renting, I'm sure that wasn't what you had in mind.

If you don't need to worry about scripting anything, Newcomb (the no-script sandbox) is usualy a good bet if you want to work in relative peace. For scripted stuff, an imperfect solution would be to go up a hundred feet or so and work on a sky platform.
Time for LL to add a coupple more sandbox sims yet, I wonder?

That was my plan - I know someone who is doing them individually. From: Karsten Rutledge And as vocal as you've been crying out against renting, I'm sure that wasn't what you had in mind. My views on renting have not changed... however it's the only way I'm going to achieve my dreams here (and can't afford $1200 up front), and am only considering it because I know the person well and trust them enough not to screw me over like I know some would do. There are no technical reasons why these islands can't be sold individually I am sure. I would guess that there are a lot of people in a similar situation to me, and they would sell. Not everyone has plans that are purely commercial/crowdpulling and can expect an income to cover $195 a month recurring. Lewis

Lewis If I had the money to throw at it, I'd love to have one regular island and two openspaces, that's 9 sims total. The island in the middle, surrounded by openspaces. 3x3 grid. It'd be fantastic.

There are tons of empty spots around..........and if people have large lots they often won't mind if somebody uses their area to build on, as long as they are asked first. I say this because I keep seeing builds of friends that occur up high, and they are usually on somebody else's land up in a skybox. There is this thing called a private workspace sold for 100L that is really great for builds when you wanna be out of the way of the general public.

Haha no you're not supposed to sell in sandboxes, but I have!
Accidentally.
On my Kokopelli house, I was testing out the contents of its box, which I had already set to sale. It was completely finished, but I was doing a final test.
I was sitting ON the purchase box, which someone literally bought it out from under me! I say out from under me, because apparently it made me stand up! (Though they bought a copy, of course, so the box was still there.)
I can't say I minded!

I've had a lot of success in the Plum region, especially when tuning land vehicle performance. The uneven terraforming there makes for an especially good crucible into which to pour a fledgling car. This is, of course, moot of your 40m vehicle is an airship of some kind.

-2fast I did find a lovely whole, flat Linden owned sim which was perfect.... but unfortunately a lot of others seem to have discovered it and leave their stuff lying around when they leave... but thanks for the offer, I'll bear it in mind next time I am trying to work big. Lewis

Lewis Just so you know Lewis... Every single rule that you mentioned is not only a good idea they are already rules that are in place in the Linden supported sandboxes like Sandbox Island. They are the precise definition of sandbox "etiquette" that was taught to me by older players when I joined more than a year ago and most of the time used to be followed. I remember not so long ago that you would be chastised by IM if you mistakenly left your stuff behind! In short people are already supposed to do all that stuff, but no one does anymore. Possibly because the whole SL society has gone to shit and no one cares about anything but themselves anymore. (scuse the language, but it's true.) More signs of the deterioration of what was once a very cool place.

From my experience it's been 50/50 with half being just interested observers & the other half being annoying. I dont mind someone stopping by, checking out my build, some small talk ensues. What gets annoying is when they have to show off every lil' thing they've done- gestures, sounds, animations, clothing, avatars, etc. One or two would've been fine. NOT your whole damn inventory!!!! Yea, folks with vehicles can also be annoying. At least most of them apologize if they bump you. I dont even mind if it happens once or twice by the same person, but when it's one bump right after another, yea, they're just being an ass. Heh, I might just rez a big hollow cube on the ground & build inside it

Simple solution to your problem:
1) rez platform on ground 2) sit on platform 3) edit platform, set z axis for 400 meters 4) work in peace

Well. This problem is par for the course, and one of the reasons people have asked for offline building for a good, long time. <shamelessPlug>And why people like me and this guy decided to do something about it. </shamelessPlug>
