Enough Complaints, we Know it's Broken, What are YOUR solutions?
06-20-2006 19:03
Yes, but 140 IS over 18, and therefore NOT a Violation of TOS. :D

Seriously, I've been reading many of these Threads on the Free accounts. I have to Agree, Some form of Verification IS needed, but i also remember the halcion days of Ten Dollar Basic accounts, and Verification by Credit card when Many Teens got access to the Grid just by Using Mommy's Plastic and Name. That system didn't really work any better than THIS one. We still had griefers, Lots of them. Anyone remember the Attacks that took down the WHOLE grid? All players "Verified" Using the Old system.

Ok,, This doesn't work.
Credit Cards don't work.

Lets hear some REAL, Practicle and economicly Viable (Notice that is Last on my Priorities) ways that LL can Verify age and other necesary Data Without Violating the Law.

Angel.

Main diference is this. IT IS A CRIMINAL ACT, PUNISHABLE IN A COURT OF LAW, TO FRAUDLENTLY USE A CREDIT CARD. Lying about your age and name to a website form, on the other hand, is not a crime at all.

Using credit cards as ID verification may not be perfect, but at least if they fraudulently used their parent's card to some other stolen or fake card, and got caught, you could take the idiots to court for credit card fraud.

*shrugs* I'm not surprised. I mean when Linden Labs decides to do something they don't do it half-assed.

It's true, they don't even bother with a email check. Hell, I had to jump through more hoops just to get an SL Exchange account, and that was before buying anything, lol.

I'm still steamed that one of the gazillion alts created in the past couple of weeks took the alt name I was coveting for legitamite reasons. (I don't like the name I qucikly picked, without thinking enough about confusion it would cause)

I was talking to a woman tonight who said she just cancelled her 15 yr old daughter's account... an account created on the MAIN grid. She came in her daughter's room and saw her playing SL and recognized the club her daughter's AV was dancing in as a main grid club. So she cancelled the kid's main grid account and her teen grid account and took her computer away for a month.

(btw she does know I'm talking about her here, she said it was fine, :) not mentioning any names though)

The club the kid was dancing in (again I won't actually name) but a well known dance club with rooms full of a certain type of animation balls and bondage set ups. Want to hazard a guess how many days ago the girl created her alt? If her mother hadn't caught her, I wonder how long it would have been before LL did if ever. I'm not bashing LL, I know they really do plan to boot out any teens they find, I'm just being realistic about their chances of really finding most of them.

You're right Angelique, credit card checks are not foolproof, but at least it's something and something is better than nothing at all until better options are realized. That's all I'm saying, that yes there are other ways and LL knows what they are and they have those other methods in the works and that's great. But you don't take the locks off the front door BEFORE you install the security system.

yup. I've created loadsa alts recently when I've been bored, and I havent given a real name or email yet.

When I appealed to LL to AT LEAST have email verification I was told that people consider registration with any kind of activation or identification too 'high friction' - even including merely clicking a link in an email to activate your account to prove you gave a real address.

If you ask me, anyone who wants to join the community with so little accountability doesn't deserve to be a member.

Personally, I think LL's next step forward should be for anyone to log in at any time and create a user name on the fly. I mean, even the little verification procedure we have now is too much trouble for some people.

Even better solution, remove the username/password requirement. Someone just need to click on the SecondLife icon, and Bang! You're in game....

... your avatar would be randomly selected from the pool of 270,000 existing customer avatars, and at each login it would be someone else! ....

Imagine.

You could one day be a furry....

... next day you'd be a pirate...

... next day some drama gangster ...

... some scammer ...

... someone's alt? ...

... or a gorean slave?! (Great Gorean Auction!?)

Imagine the possibilities...

I propose an IRC style system, where you can change your name on a whim provided no-one else is using the target name.

I wonder what would happen if everyone used the same address.... something like "philip@lindenlabs.com", for example, to verify their account..... *ponders*

Merely a thought, not a suggestion by any means of course.

If unregistered accounts had limited abilities, not able to give/receive money etc., that might not be so bad. People could type in a username and log in with it with no password if that username is not registered. Then if they want an account, they have to register with credit card.

Zepp, I think limited functionality for unregistered/unverified accounts is the *only* way for LL to get themselves out of this hole. Unregistered/unverified accounts get people into SL with minimum fuss. The ones who like what they see can then sign up for a basic or premium account and enjoy the full shebang. The sign-up process would require, at minimum, CC & verifyable email info plus a possible 24-hour delay time for LL staff to process each application.

Great Gorean Auction! Can't we have a system to check the id number of your passports? I saw an adult page that used this age verification system once.

Mad... not every SL resident is US-based. Are you suggesting that LL access the Interpol database? CC's are pretty much ubiquitous all over the planet and I've seen plenty of sites that only accept certain CC's (Matercard, Visa, etc.) and not debit or gift cards. LL could easily do the same.

You could add questions as to whether applicants have criminal records and/or are convicted sex offenders.
