From: Argent Stonecutter So sell two versions. I keep running into this myself, and I've never got a clear explanation of why this was such a difficult thing to do, particularly with clothing where you don't have any embedded scripts or animations that also need to be set right... You keep saying this over and over and over again, but I have yet to see you inform anyone of how to do this without doubling a prim count or having to sell from vendors, which sucks. Do you have an actual suggestion as to how people can sell 2 versions without hassles, or should we all double our tier, prim usage, script usage and store size?

And double my inventory and require that I check the properties all the time. Ack!!

I assumed that most people were selling from vendors already, because most of the shops that I frequent do that, unless they're selling big objects like planes that require a full-prim version on display anyway. My favorites are the "holovendors" that rez up a temp-on-rez copy of the object on demand. Many products, like animations or textures, almost demand a scripted vendor. Clothing stores seem to be about the only major exception... why is that? Really, I'm curious.

Clothing stores tend to have a much larger inventory than other stores. No one wants to stand in place for an hour flipping through a single vendor looking at 1-12 pics at a time, after they've rezzed, and then realize you've only seen the shirts. They're also a pain in the butt to load when you have a large inventory. Some things also simply don't lend themselves to certain permissions..
If you get copy - you won't get trans. I won't give any script mod.
Over that I try and evaluate what perms set would benefit the majoity of users for each item... if theres no absolute need for modify - trans no-copy.
I don't mind sending gifts - I also try and direct people to SL boutique where I have my stuff on display for the express purpose of allowing people to buy gifts..

From: Jonquille Noir Clothing stores tend to have a much larger inventory than other stores. I would say that would be texture stores. Which use vendors BECAUSE they have such a large inventory. It sounds like you've got some fundamental design problems with your vendor scripts, because it shouldn't be that hard. But at least you've explained why clothing stores are such a primmy lagfest, and why it's so hard to find clothes I like with the permissions I want.

I am evil then. I don't allow copy, mod or transfer on my clothes. You buy it its yours. If ya lose it, I'll give you a new one. But then I don't have millions of people who want my clothes. And I am in business to make clothes, not money. Although really, when I decide everything is a limted edition, then you won't have copies, you won't beable to sell it or give it away, and you sure can't modify it. But given the size of my customer base so far you will be in a very unique club.
Oh and if you buy something and want to give it to a friend, I am more than happy to arrange something to make you both benefit.

Forgive me if this is noobish, but what about including 2 versions of the item in the same purchase, for the price of one: a no-copy/trans and a copy/no-trans? That way you wouldn't have to use twice the prims, or a vendor. Is that feasible? Does it leave room for abuse?
I've been wondering about this, specifically as regards selling skins.

Transfer Bug
12-25-2005 18:30
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but ever since one of the updates, I get IM's from ppl who cannot transfer an item as a gift. The items are indeed transferable, but they cannot transfer. I even pulled one out and made sure it was transferable, but they could not transfer it. Is there a bug that we are aware of?

So, the buyer could just keep the no-transfer version and give the transfer version away--everytime. Does that cut down on sales? maybe. But that brings up a conundrum. If you prefer mod/copy permissions, then you probably want to give items with mod/copy permissions. SLB/SLX is your best solution if the vendor sells clothing with no-trans. All my items are Transfer OK. I'm happy to exchange a transfer item for a copy item. But, yes, you have to contact me to do so. You just can't please everyone all the time.

What I want to see is the ability to copy the product within your inventory, AND you can give it away... but when you give it away, ALL the copies in your inventory are removed.
Buying a no-copy vehicle at this point is basicly like flushing your money down the toilet. You have to wonder if the people who sell such things have even played with their own creations enough to realize why "copyable" would be a good idea.

I try to have all the items in my Emporiums as transfer (and modify) so people can give them as gifts The only exceptions are a couple of Egyptian Temple kits I do. The reason is that these contain compenents that the owner will wish to copy (to make the temples have more than one walll, etc) - if I made them transfer too then there is nothing to stop the purchasers just distributing them as freebies.
