From: Aodhan McDunnough Who's using a knife? My S.A.Knife has a very good file. (It has 2 knives, two-sided file and saw combo, large-tooth saw, scissors, awl, corkscrew, toothpick, tweezers, magnifying glass, 2 screwdrivers, can opener, bottle opener, fish descaler, and ruler) /spaz seriously, that isn't good for your nails, thats why they might split or whatever, even using a file isn't that great on them :/

Yeah, when you go days without seeing the sun and only get fresh air when your checking the mail .. its time to re-evaluate... but then the sun and air can be like overrated too

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu you just probably don't notice It's a guy thing ... short nails, less likely to crack. And they seem to be pretty tolerant. They've survived paint thinner, various chemicals, and all tools I've handled.

I think it's far too easy for some people, myself included, to spend too much time in an environment like Second Life. I make a point of getting out and doing other things on weekends, and on certain weeknights, with RL friends and family. But honestly, playing in SL is often preferable to a lot of the realities of my real life. In SL I don't sweat to death because it's 110 degrees outside in the shade. In SL I have a wider range of friends that I like spending time with. etc...
But you need to have a balance there, too. It's not fair to your RL friends and family or even to on-line friends that you may have elsewhere, outside SL, if you are locked away in SL all the time. Two of my best on-line friends seem to spend almost every waking moment in SL or playing WoW, respectively. One I hardly ever see on-line anywhere but in SL any more, and the other I almost never see, because they are playing WoW all the time.
I spend too much time in SL, and I know it. I've been trying hard to build a business and a solid reputation in SL, and it's been working out OK. But it's also taken a huge chunk of my time away from other things that I could, and should, be doing in RL.

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu Im just thinking out loud basically here and just want other peoples reflections..
Spending time online vs in real life... Do you think it stunts your development as a human being? On the flipside of that a blind person can't see who they are talking to but they can still build lasting relationships like anyone else.. So you don't have to see the person.. I have a friend that is a quad so he doesn't get around a whole lot so we talk more on the phone... so being in the phsyical space of another doesn't establish friendships... So that would bring to me the fact that friendship and relationships (not intimate ones) are capable of being made online..
But what about what makes you you, what about your health, your quality of life? oh well.. one of those things that always bother me.. :/ Usually when i see a thread that starts with i was thinking i get worried... My real life is all over but the flushing so to speak lol but in second life i can walk and fly and keep all my inventory in a teeny weeny folder in my pocket and all the clothes fit...ill take second life for now....ty Volatile for an interesting thread Sometimes you feel the pain in second life as much as real because you associate the pc with the person/relationship and when it fails its more than pixels ..you dont even want to log in...but in all time heals/fades the bad stuff and we move on to do it all over again....is my 2L up yet?? rain

From: VolatileWhimsy Bu On the flipside of that a blind person can't see who they are talking to but they can still build lasting relationships like anyone else.. So you don't have to see the person My Mom lost her vision about 4 years ago and has had to make major adjustments, physically and emotionally. I have noticed that since she cannot see she is closer to people, more mentally and emotionally focused on them, and has formed deeper friendships than she had previously. I think it's because she lacks the distractions that would coexist while with friends in the past, whether it's driving, reading the paper, tv on etc. When she interacts now she lacks those external distractions allowing her to be more in tune with the person she is with. Maybe online interaction acts the same way, and we focus more intensely upon the person we are with.

I think all of you are right.. so I want to add a bit more.. I really honestly believe we get to know each other without prejudice... And the physical things in life that shouldn't make a diff but at tiems do does not have any relation online at all... I know people try to pretend they are someone else.. but honestly, they can only maintain that for a certain period of time before their true nature is seen.. So the great thing is we can actually say we appreciate each other for who we are not what we represent or how we look... So I think we owe it to the people in our lives to try and make our lives balanced... Hmm maybe you wont see it that way, but i like looking at the big picture vs the ity bity tiny one But on anohter note, i still think soccer players are HOT!

So that would bring to me the fact that friendship and relationships (not intimate ones) are capable of being made online..
But what about what makes you you, what about your health, your quality of life? oh well.. one of those things that always bother me.. :/ It is a very individual thing. There is no easy, set, pat answer to this question. The internet is a tool. Like a phone or a television or any other communication device we have invented. It allowes people to communicate and send information. Nothing more. Now...what people DO with that ability is a peraonl thing. Someone that used to go out and interact with friends and family but now stays home and gambles online instead likely has a problem. But...and this is the BUT with a capital...that person would done the same thing offline if they discovered a gambling establishment nearby. being online had nothing to do with it. The person is prone to being addicted to gambling. Any gambling. Thus when exposed to it online, they exhibited the latent addiction and lost perspective. same happens everyday to people around the world at real casinos, with lotteries, etc. Sure, someone that spends all day looking at pron online may be missing human interaction in their sexual relations...but then again, if they are spending all day loooking at pron online they likely already didn't have any human interactions in their sexual relations. The internet does not "make" people do anything. Nor is it any more dangerous to anyone than anything not online. People can become addicted to anything and everything...literally. It doesn't matter if you are addicted to internet pron, online gaming, online gambling, chat rooms, or watching TV 24/7, going to nascar or being addicted to ice cream. Addictions are bad because you loose control. But, it isn't the ice cream that is bad. It is you that have a problem that leds you to be addicted to ice cream. Take away the ice cream...the problem underneath remains and likely you will find something else to be addicted to...like knitting. On the other hand...the internet and online communities like SL can be a godsend for many people who otherwise would not be able to have any human interaction. People who are homebound for example. I myself am deaf. I also suffer from severe chronic depression and PTSD from a long history of abuse. I find leaving my house near impossible. The stress, panic, anxiety and fear involved in dealing with people face to face is dibilitating to me, not to mention the language barrier I run into every day of my life (More people in my city known Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Japanese than know sign language). Online...that language barrier disappears. I can type the same as a hearing person and hearing people can understand me for a change. Its an amazing feeling. Online in places like SL I can experience friendships and talk to people without fear they can attack me, abuse me or rape me. No, being online does not make it easy for me, but it does make it easier. Where I can't even begin to interact well with people face to face, I can at least mostly do so here...and that has saved my life I can tell you. So in the end...SL and the internet are no different than a phone, or a television. Its a tool, and yes some people can abuse that tool or become addicted to it. But for every person that loses themselves to that tool...there is someone like me that finds themselves because of it.
