Here's one for the shrinks on the forum.
I have a furry avatar, and he has all the bits, and my friends have all the bits too. occasionly we've walked around naked, and we don't worry all that much about it.
There's a part of the mind that goes "I'm an animal. animals don't wear clothes... so if I want to strip everything off (something I rarely do) then it's fine"
But when I come across human avatars, I get a bit sort of... nervous.
I forgot about that until a female friend of mine said exactly the same thing. She didn't care that the males were nude in front of her, and she didn't care that She was nude either (although she has the standard anthrowolf body and is unequipped).
She told me a few nights ago that if a human shows up, she feels weird and wants to cover herself up.
That made me ponder.
Wolfie!

One reason is that furry or not you're still human. We're used to seeing naked animals (because they are) however due to cultural upbringing we are not comfortable being naked in front of other humans. We'd be comfortable naked around our pets but not when we have visitors. Our race is still human and we have conditioned reactions to being human and being with humans. You being a furry does not override everything. We know our pets are not judging us on our nudity, but other humans are.

I sort of know what you mean, but I'm a furry who isn't into the sex stuff. I just don't like having my dragon avatar when there's a lot of people who aren't "Furry" I don't like wearing it. I feel like I'm being judged. Maybe it's the same for you guys?

You know, for some reason, this is making me think that maybe I should get pants for my rl house cats. I had thought for a while about making them kitty-sized lederhosen, but their shoulders really aren't shaped right to hold up the suspenders, and you know, cats really don't like wearing hats, and the lederhosen outfits just aren't complete without the little tyrolean hats, and even if they would wear them, the cats would probably attack the little hairy tassel thingees on each other's hats, and they'd probably eventually eat them and then throw up, and man, I sure hate cleaning up cat barf.....
...I'm sorry, what were we talking about?

I think this sums it up. iRL furries are judged whenever they're seen. It's probably a reflex reaction to your meeting a non-furry.

Holding down the 'alt' key causes some active objects to become visible in a ghostly red color. I use the 'alt' key when moving my camera view around often. Quite a few non-fury types wear invsibile 'bits' out in public. I get that awkward feeling like when you notice someone's fly is open. I want to tell them.... but at the same time pretend likeI didn't see anything. Honestly, if it's a mature sim who cares... unless you're a shaved furry?

It'd be interesting to get reactions from the other side to see exactly what an uninitiated human thinks of the sight. If they're offended, then yeah, you probably have a better reason to tuck away the goods. Some will depend on where the observer is from, don't forget that the US is more uptight about nudity than most countries.
But are they? Or does it depend on the AV? Does the number of naked bodies add an element of peer pressure to ease the shock?
I don't know that I'm bold enough to conduct experiments myself, but it'd be highly informative to find out.

From: Wolfie Rankin he has all the bits, and my friends have all the bits too. Okay, well, besides the fact that this line sounds like something from an 80's old school rap lyric -- you aren't doing this in PG areas, are you?

Interesting observation...
Personally, Ceera's a bit of a 'clothes horse' - she likes dressing up in pretty clothes. But if she's in an all-furry group she doesn't consider it to be 'bad' to join the others and walk around 'in the fur', weather she has non-aroused adult bits showing or is wearing a generic skin with no visible details.
As a general rule, on the more rare occasions where I play a male. I don't appear in public situations while 'aroused'. I also usually don't show optional 'adult details' when I am 'in the fur' in public.
But if I am not in an area that is pretty much all-furry, then I would always be clothed, unless it was specificly designated as a 'nude OK' area. That's as a courtesy to other people's sensibilities as much as anything else. Not so much that I am embarrassed to be seen in the fur. (Then again, my Player also has no personal concerns with public nudity in RL, if it's in a socially acceptable situation, such as at a designated nude beach, or a gathering of friends who I know are all cool with people being unclothed.)
You're probably right though. Seeing a Human while you're 'in the fur' reminds you that to that Human, your clothes-free condition might not be socially acceptable, whereas doing so among furrs is generally considered acceptable.

Hell, I'll walk around fur sims in the buff, just like 'nude' fur avs. Humans are animals too.

Dude,
This is exactly how I feel when I wear my robot avatar. I'm like, here I am naked with no clothes on, and then I think.. oh how weird it would be to wear clothes. So I just pretend to be dead so anyone passing me would think I'm just part of the landscape and not a naked robot.
Does any other naked robots have similar feelings? I feel like holding sockets with compatible robots...

From: Jonas Pierterson Hell, I'll walk around fur sims in the buff, just like 'nude' fur avs. Humans are animals too. You know, under normal circumstances, that screams "I'm just here looking for sex" even in furry sims. Kind of a double standard, but that might be tainted by the number of times it's true. I don't think I'd have any problem with humans parading around naked in a furry locations, IF they're actually being friendly and sociable. If you're just standing around silently gawking- pervert. Just make some eye contact and it's all ok.

Interesting thread! I guess when I'm in furry mode, where I cross "territories" from furry to non-furry or open areas, I wear some clothing. If I'm not going out of a furry area I don't feel the need to wear clothes unless it's just for the pleasure of dressing in human clothes for effect. For me the assumption is that when I'm wearing my fur - I am not in fact "naked". But then the non-genitalized aspects of the AVs in SL make me chuckle anyway especially when not allowed in a PG area. *grin*

Oddly enough, for me, I HATE going naked with any of my avitars, even out in the open on a semiprivate (read: obscure) sim. However, I could be the only one with a fur av in a packed human-oriented club, and I'd feel very confortable, at the same confort level as if I was in a fur-oriented sim. I guess it is all about how you view others, I suppose.

I'm not a furry but I'm not one of those that shuns furries. What I think happens on the "other side" is that anti-furries are not even paying attention to the state of dress/undress. What bothers them is the furry himself. Those who are non-furry and not anti-furry I think they're not bothered unless genitalia or any provocative skin will appear.

Okay, allow me to put it this way:
If my pet cat would ever start walking on his two back feet, using his arms to manipulate tools, speak my language and learn how to open his cans of cat-food by himself?
I'd sure as hell make him put some pants on.

Weird Psychology? I do not think so. We are used to wear clothes, it is a common standard. We wear clothes in RL to protect the body and hide naughty bits. We do not need to protect the body in SL. But we wear clothes in RL to respect other SL users and their beliefs.

I think clothes look silly on furries. And besides, why wear a special avatar if you're just going to cover it up?

From: Shirley Meiji I think clothes look silly on furries. And besides, why wear a special avatar if you're just going to cover it up? Well, it really depends if they dawn the naughty parts or not. Some people just don't much care for animal cocks or other parts in their peripheral, specially since they take up a new... apperance/meaning when placed on something or in areas some people would dub anatomically incorrect.
