several threads have been closed on this basis.

while this serves to prevent people from getting around the whole point of closing the thread in the first place, it also serves to stifle any concrete discussion about how ll does forum moderation

in the end the meta-rule about reposting serves to prevent criticism of ll.

And that suprises you why? I love the kiss-ass ResMod comments when they lock threads now. I bet they're swelling with faux-Linden pride behind their keyboards.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

BTW, we do need to be careful overall to separate criticism of the ResMod program and the ResMods themselves. The vast majority of the problem is with the program. However, there are some patterns emerging already with some ResMods that don't bode so well. (an example is the spite used to rate two stars on Cocoanut's critical thread about not being able to rate threads ourselves - that is just fucking petty and childish) Unfortunately, we are unable to name names, so yet another way to stifle any criticism of the moderation is to use the rules themselves to limit speech.

Yeah I saw that and couldn't believe it. I don't really give a rat's ass about the stars but that was serious bullshit. Par for the course around here though now it seems.

Exactly - that star rating had very clear meaning. I do believe it is possible to detect who rated it - they should be removed from the ResMod program immediately. What they did there had zero to do with moderation and was just spiteful.

Yep, I think the ResMods are kinda like the waitress that you fuss at because your food is crappy. You know the waitress didn't cook it but she is the only one in your face at the moment.

Actually flagged by a resmod or not .. the ultimate decision to lock a post is done by LL.

However, linking to a locked post is pretty obviously grounds for having the current post locked as well. That is common sense I would hope.

to extend your analogy... having a resmod flag something (inappropriately) is like having the waitress spit in your crappy food before serving it to you.

Sorry, ResMods are complicit in my view. It's an optional thing. If they didn't support the program or what they were expected to do why did they,

(a). Apply in the first place,
(b). Not resign when they realised what a farce it is or,
(c). If they didn't apply, resign directly at the start as they had the opportunity to do.

My guess? Those that are still doing it love being "play-Lindens" and having some sort of power over others. I've seen a couple of comments on ResMod closed threads that have, quite frankly, made me want to puke my ring.

The star voting is hilarious. Those who voted like that are tossers. So yup, complicit.

All apart from Merwan, but then that's a good thing, because Merwan's posting in the last 6 months (about slexchange and constantly bitching towards Anshe at every opportunity) clearly violated the rules for being picked in the first place, so it's hardly suprising he's kept a low profile. The Lindens really researched this, didn't they.

Oh dear, named a name. Slapped hand. I am a naughty boy.

I appreciate your support on the star thing, those of you who also see it as a totally ridiculous and unfair thing. But I agree with Cristiano that it's important not to rag on the resmods as if they totally, as a group, were all complicit in anything bad that has happened or will ever happen with the program.

Nothing is ever that simple. There are resmods still modding who have nothing, NOTHING, but the best of intentions to make this a better place for all of us. Who are doing NOTHING but spending hours of their time to help things, and with no pay. It hurts them to read things about "holier-than-thou" and all that stuff when they are bending over backwards trying to be fair to all and make this work, and it is NEVER an easy job, even when the system makes sense and has clear guidelines.

We don't know who is doing what behind the scenes. Yes, there are obviously some who are causing more harm than helping, and they should not be there.

But let's not forget that some of our best people are behind those scenes, taking their own personal valuable time, a lot of thought, and great care, out of their own generosity and giving spirits, trying to do a tough job as best they possibly can.

Even some of those with a poor posting record of their own may be trying to change, so what do you expect, them to go on being blunt and crude? Those who may be trying to change, and trying to do their best - I have to respect that, even if it may look somewhat ludicrous.

You know I don't like a lot about this system, and I've clearly said what I thought has sucked about it. But I also know there are wonderful people in that group simply trying to do something for all of us, with little in the way guidelines, training, or coordination to help them.

Let's not hurt them! We may not know who has done what, but I can pretty much rest assured that most of them have NOT done anything wrong. They are our friends, and deserve our thanks and appreciation for at least trying, if nothing else, so let's not paint every individual with a brush that should be reserved for the system itself, and the way it was implemented.*

coco

*and for the bozos that star-degraded my thread.

I don't think what is going on right now is "corruption" so much as it is a bunch of people who suddenly have power over other people, and are using it a bit too freely.

Sokay though - in like 2 weeks we get to go through it all again :P

"But I agree with Cristiano that it's important not to rag on the resmods as if they totally, as a group, were all complicit in anything bad that has happened or will ever happen with the program."

Well - unfortunately thats the problem with group efforts... there is no 'I' in team and if the program shits itself then there's 'team lumps' to be taken...

Just one bad apple, and all that shit...

But what do I know? I'm just one of the teki wiki thats destroying this world.

But, but, but... SL is all about freedom of expression, at least that's what Mr. Impeach told me although with somewhat more graphic language.

Plus, it only took slashdot about 5 years to implicitly declare bitching about moderation to be boring - things are looking up in 2011! The only thing we have to fear is fear itself (and chickens on pot, oh and Sputnik, too)!

I would say not too freely, but with essentially no guidance nor instruction nor training nor defined set of critera.

Here, do this task, I can't tell you how because I don't know myself, the rules are horribly ambiguous and the measure of how well you do doesn't exist.

What a shitty position to put someone in. A juror has a judge to give them specific instruction as to what to consider and what standard to apply. Yes, the forums have always had "guidelines" but they are absolute nebulous shite. I don't even know that the ResMods have been given a goal to aim for. I have high regard for all the ResMods; I think I'm pretty clever, even judicious at times. But I'd have no bloody idea what to do if I were in their shoes, and I'm guessing neither do they.

Three cheers for another well conceived LL project!
