i am so mad at all these griefers. people like me (who i've been told is a minority unfortunately) who don't have the ability to verify themselves with credit cards or bank accounts (i don't have either. because i'm jobless at the moment) or cellphones (our cellphone isn't even in the list available) are going to be looked at as griefers because of these jerks. i joined because i wanted to have fun and i constantly see people blowing stuff up, or shooting at other people. they're going to ruin things for people like me.

I am beginning to think that maybe putting fines in place might not be a bad idea. If you grief on an alt or even your main, you pay a L fine to LL, using the hash system they've started. Maybe this would mark the minds of the little buggers?

I can see multiple ways of handling that, but I'm not sure how successful it would be or if it would even be practicle code-wise.

How would fines work?

Most of the griefers we've seen are unverifieds, they probably have no money (and probably would avoid getting any if they thought they might get caught), and fining them into a negative L$ balance would have to have some teeth in it to make it viable, like no login if your account is negative.

Come by my place in Satang sometime, I play live acoustic shows once in a while. My stage will always be open to unverified users. It's a tiny little 512sqm First Land thing, but I have a bonfire and a few chairs there as well as the stage. Innocent until proven guilty!

60% o.O I would have said 72.4% worse..

**edit** for no reason other than I have a tooth ache and feel like being a little bit sarcastic!

if(slMember == beenShot)
{
llOrbitNoobie();
}

heh. I can dream. :D

i was skimming though the forums, and when i came across this topic i felt i needed to post.

Im a little annoyed at the fact that ya'll want to ban ALL unverified people, not all of us are underage...i myself happen to be 25 years old. I just want to play the game for a bit before i decide to pay for it.
I have been playing expensive RPGs for years, and for once id like to try one for free first.

I don't know about anyone else here...but i dont have a ton of money to throw around on games ( hence the reason im on secondlife) so dont condemn me for it.

They are legitimate griefs Raevyn,,, however since your new if theres anything i can do im me and if i can ill help..Herry was there to help me when i got griefed..hes a great guy...two weeks now and its endless and i got the worst shock of all with the last griefers name....almost made me pack up and leave....

welcome to second life..hang on to your collectables tho its sometimes a rough ride....

The only ones that will want to remain unverified are the underage.

That's a rather broad and incorrect statment. I have two friends who play SL that cannot get verified (one because of slave wage labor, the other becuase he's german) that help make SL a better place and are defently not underage.

10 a day? Holy crap... I feel for ya then, didnt realise somewhere was THAT bad.

I share onionpencil's experience, but I also look at the profiles of the griefers we ban and I see almost as many pre-6/6 griefers as I do freebie alt accounts.

From: someone
What is there that can be done about this? any ideas?

I cant wait for that block for no payment info people, will be helpful.

I don't think you're going to find that the payment info ban will help you much. A significant percentage of the griefers we've banned in the last 2 months have actually been on verified accounts created before 6/6.

And to be fair, it seems to have gotten a little better since LL instituted their MAC address/hash system -- if nothing else, it put griefers on notice that they would be held personally accountable, after all.

Anyway I'm no longer convinced that the unverified registration has brought in a flood of griefers. Certainly a few, but more often I've seen freebie newbs who had this very strange familiarity with scripted objects and push weapons, yet could not possibly have any money. It's the alts who are the threat, not the newbies.

To me the best steps LL can take to limit griefing are:

* MAC address/hash -- already done
* Raise the ban list length from 50 to 200 to 500.
* Allow disabling of push weapons by parcel (coming in 1.11)
* Prohibit banned residents from using scripts or rezzing prims on land from which they've been banned. (The new mute option today is cosmetic and doesn't really solve anything important)

Two of the four items are either in place or coming. The other two would be a great addition to security options on land tools. None of these have a single thing to do with unverified newbies.

It's unfortunate that the actions a some ratphuk griefers have brought it to this point, but...*shrugs*...that just the way it is for now. I still believe it (group bans) would be a valuable / useful tool that landowners should have in their kit and they can each decide to use or not use it at their choice.

Who's asking you to throw around money?

You don't have to *buy* anything, just enter your credit card details. That will at least get you onto the part of my land that I'm using the new land ban tools on. That doesn't require you to spend anything.

Beyond that, to get the details confirmed by having bought something, you don't have to spend a *lot* of money. A few bucks, just once, spent to buy $L will do the trick and verify you forever after.

Anyway, in my case it's not so much the potential for under-aged users, it's simply to keep off the multiple throw away griefer alts that have been showing up *literally* daily lately to shoot up my and my neighbor's places. I have nothing against new users, but the griefing has gotten so bad that I simply don't have any other choice.

IT's something that Island owners have. I don't see why LL isn't even (Acording to a recent Linden post.) *working* on it right now.

I don't think you can estate ban a group, unless they recently slid that in. I'll have to check my estate tools.

Not even credit card details, verified paypal or credit card... Which if your worried about them billing your card, empty your paypal and verify it with your cc or bank card, then shizamm! you get payment info on your profile.

have a thing that happend...

The other day, and for a few days after we had griefers bothering our tenants, id rush over to check out the situation, and hmm there were a couple cops there, or avs dressed as and pretending to be cops. Said on both occasions that the griefer had called on them...and then offered their services to me as hmm "protection". LOL i have to admit what a way to make a few bucks..but as far as banning goes, ive noted after the griefing incedent, the av is abandoned, and they just move on to a new name..and continue on. As long as the free accts exist, this will always be a problem, its just too easy to assume a a new identity. (you can ban all day and all nite-but this isnt a workable solution)

Anywayyyyy wondered if anyone had run into the same scam as i mentioned above.??
