Just a little gripe session - not something I usually indulge in. Am I the only one who finds it annoying when a big 1st Life company comes into second life and loudly proclaims itself the '1st *whatever* to create a presence in a Virtual World'? I think it's neat that they can use their connections to get people like Suzanne Vega, and Kurt Vonnegut to visit SL - but I wish that they could involve more residents or at least take the time to get a feel for what it's like in here. You can't create a 'Presence' by just setting up camp in SL and holding an event or two. You need to BE here and be a part of our culture. I was just watching the this Interview with Suzanne Vega (Filmed by Tao Takahashi - great job Tao!). I really enjoyed Suzanne's performance - but the whole setup just kind of bothered me. They had no idea about what actually goes on around the grid, no idea what the Metaverse Messenger was, no clue that they were taking questions from popular SL residents & musicians like Slim Warrior, and Cylindrian Rutabaga. It seemed to me like they were just using Second Life to promote their own 1st life business and not to contribute to the creative culture that is SL. I guess we were all noobs to begin with, but most noobs have the presence of mind to realize that they have no clue what is going on. They take the time to learn about our world, to contribute to the culture, before screaming out "Look at me!"

I just wish that they would spend a little time learning about the world or maybe hook up with some residents who are more 'rooted' in SL.

Musicians that go on tour rarely see much more of the city than the airport and the venue :/

How would you suggest the celebrity go about it? They buy a premium account, buy some land, wait a few monts, and then go around telling everyone they're a celebrity?
"Hello everyone, I just wanted everyone to know I'm Kurt Vonnegut"
I'm sure if you wanted, you could have your publicist call up LL to schedule an inworld event too.

You seem to have missed the point - the SL population are not PEOPLE - they are marketing targets. We don't count except as targets for their marketing campaigns. Once AMAZON et al can get us to use the browser function to order pizza, books, etc, and they ca serve FLASH ads to us, we become nothing more than an aggregate audience. Then LL will sell out to the highest bidder.

It's not really the celebrities in SL that bug me - it's the 1st life companies that set up shop and proclaim - Here We Are! - without getting a feel for what makes Second Life so unique.

I'm fine with celebrities popping into SL. I'm fine with RL companies setting up SL shop.
What I am not fine with is the RL companies (and LL) declaring some sort of statement that is false... usually "We are the first to...."

Dearly Darling Olympia,
That is too funny! My mother set herself on fire by accident during the filming of Silverado and John Cleese had to put her out. After all that, she only made the cutting room floor!
I'm much happier sitting at my home in Green looking at your wonderful sculpture than hunting for famous people floating around here.
Ever Yours,
Mrs. Showdog Tiger

Well, Suzanne Vega mentioned during her interview that she was a total newbie to SL, and that only hours before the show, she still thought that SL was something she would access through her web browser. As far as the good people of The Infinite Mind, they are all relatively new to SL, but learning fast, and they have some excellent tutors in Boliver Oddfellow and the crew at Infinite Vision Media. And insofar as the M2 is concerned, the Infinite Mind people certainly know who we are. We've been helping them get the word out about their project for some time now, and Katt and I were utterly shocked to hear our names as the first two mentioned at the top of the VIP list. Funny... I don't feel VIP. Anyway, more power to those who want to bring celebs and other real world atractions into SL. The more the merrier. P2

Wow, so you got to work with Mariel Hemingway before she became moderately famous and then washed-up! Consider yourself on the list, baby! -Pall (formerly a gawking teenager in John Carpenter's Starman)
