Just curious. Why would anybody ever want to volunteer to be a forum moderator?

I just don't see any personally redeeming qualities to doing this. I'm not trying to sound like a jack-ass and I'm all about volunteering and all, but damn, I wouldn't do it for pay and apperently some of the Linden's won't either. Just curious about peoples motivation to do this.

On another note, I was pushing the envelope in the forums recently just to see what it takes to get a warning. I finally picked one up for some comments I made in the "Want to be a Second Life Forum Moderator?" thread.

What's interesting is I was told it was a personal attack. I did use coarse language but I didn't personally attack anybody in that thread. I guess making fun of a Linden project is considered a personal attack and inflamatory or someone thought it was. The warning was well deserved for language though.

Forum mod: This is not a personal attact and is not ment to be inflamatory. Please don't put me on the ban wagon.

Oh, I wanted to add. These are pretty well moderated forums. I think the vauge warnings are kind of goofy but over all good job Jeska. Some game forums are really handled with an iron fist.

To set the record straight, I appreciate whoever nominated me, but I didn't volunteer for the position more or less on purpose.

Carry on.

I volenteered. I volenteed because I'm in the UK time zone, so might be usefull there, and half the threads that need to be posted to different sections, I did accidentally :p

I'm in all the other volenteer groups, why not?

It is *wrong* for the forums to be moderated by a forum user.

Yes, and I suppose it's also wrong for your country's leader to also be a resident of that country?
The forums were once a reasonably quiet place where people could actually come to hang out and talk about interesting things or get help. They were also open, so outsiders could come here and see what SL's all about.
The only reason why I would want to be a forum moderator is to gratuitously lock/move/delete threads and posts until LL could once again point to the forums as a shining example of the best SL has to offer. It would get everyone pissed off at me, but what do I care.

Aren't almost all forums moderated by users?

In an ideal forum, this kind of snarky post would be seen as a personal attack, instantly deleted and get you suspended.

If I poke you once, it may be fun, if i poke you ten times, it's a little annoying, if i poke you 100 times, you'd probably punch me in the face, and I would deserve it.

One who does not want to see "He did it in beta" comments should not repeatedly say to people "I did it in beta."

If you poke people with the beta stick a hundred times, they might well poke you back.

It's just the predictable consequence of repeated actions.

I wouldn't volunteer for all the Philip Lindens in the world. And seriously, there are a few people who i would *never* want to see as forum mods. And if by some chance they became forum mods I would most likely never read or post in the forums again. Where is the objectivity? I mean if I didn't like someone and was a forum mod I could just make their posts disappear or ban them right?

Its not quite like that. They can only rate the threads to bring them to Linden attention. Only LL can lock/delete/ban.
