Watch Out Custom Designers!

Just yesterday i made a custom hairstyle for someone (IM me in game for the name), who has several requests in the classifieds. It took me several hours to make, all i asked in return was a donation, i didn't even recieve 1L.. I made the mistake of giving this "person" the hair first(won't do that again)... she said she liked it a lot and would give me something for it definately.. moments later my av was plagued by a swarm of bugs... not sure if that was their doing.. but it was quite the coincidence. and this person hasnt gotten back to me, or even mentioned hat she couldn't donate or anything. If they didnt have any money i would have been fine with just a thank you.. but i didnt even recieve that. So, i guesse i learned my lesson... always recieve payment BEFORE you give the merchandise over. P.S. IM me for the name of this person if you are weary about wasting hours of your life making something for free.

Maybe I misunderstood what happened to you, but if you were only asking for a donation from the culprit, how can you get angry if they didn't give you anything? I think the lesson you should have learned was actually charge people. Just my 2c.

I do custom work all the time at my tattoo shop.

I've learned the best way to do it is to figure out how long it will take to make their request and then quote them an amount.
Then if they agree to it, I make the tattoo and either show them in person on ME or take pics of the tattoo on ME and send them to them.

I tell them that if they like the tattoo, to then send me x-amount of $ and I'll pass it to them, or I'll meet them somewhere and they can buy the box.

You have it over without an agreed payment, you've just given it away.

How typically American: expecting tips, as if they are a requirement, not an option, when being served.

A donation doesn't have to be paid. It is optional.

I don't do custom work as a rule. I don't have the time at all. But on the few occassions I have...the object goes into a box and this set down and the buyer can then buy from the box like all my other work.

Actually, it was a required donation. She would've been happy with just 10L or even an object trade.

Regardless if it was a required donation, expected donation, or jsut a plain ol' donation, it is still sad, one would think the person receiving the item would feel obligated to give something in return, I would have. But than I am an American (looks around)

Um, Musuko, please tell me that this statement doesn't apply to the way you tip waiters and delivery drivers IRL. People who work in these jobs (myself included) don't do it for fun, and we very rarely make more than minimum wage. I currently work as a driver for a multi-restaurant delivery service, and my only pay from the company is $2.67-$4.00 per run, depending on distance. Everything else I make is in tips. So, roughly half of my income is entirely dependant on the generosity/ethics of my customers.

And driving 10 miles for a $1 or less tip is nothing less than a grievous insult.

Why in the world would you give the item to the person before being paid for it? You might as well just ask them to rip you off. Kind of hard to have any sympathy for you if you just gave it to them.

You should have put it in a box and set it to “sell contents” for 10L. Then, if they wanted to give you a “donation” they could have just given you more money directly.

Well, when it comes to restaurants, I tip according to the service. If I get great service and they actually seem interested in helping me, I give really good tips. If I'm in a situation like I was in about a month ago, where I'm having dinner with a couple friends and one of them is pregnant, and we keep raising our empty water glasses in the air for almost 10 minutes while the waitresses chat away with valley-girl talk "like oh my god, he was sooo.." and then actually walk up to the waitress and ask for water and she still takes several minutes to finish her valley-girl conversation with the other waitress, I'm not going to tip.

That doesn't even make sense. I feel for you for working hard on something and getting nothing in return, but mandatory donation?

I do a little bit of work for friends and when they ask how much I say I accept tips. If they feel it is worth alot they usually tip quite a bit, if it was something they view as simple they don't.

I never do custom work for strangers, we got burned on that 10 ways to sunday. It's never just what they want and they never want to pay what it's worth, and they always want to resell it, which I can do myself thank you very much..

Oh yeah and since the creators name stays on there I wind up still having to do the customer support for it, even if they've given it to 20 of their closest friends to sell.. No Thank You

With treatment like that (or just excessivly rude/mean/unfriendly waitstaff) I have been known to tip two cents, which is much more insulting than tipping nothing. Normally I am a very good tipper.

I definitely think a donation should be given. For example, once I asked a jewelry-maker in Port Caledon to make me a cross of St. Brigid necklace, and I got it, along with a wonderful SL partner. Now *that* is customer service and worthy of donation.

Typically in English, we use one period per sentence. It is OK to stop typing if you need to think before you write the next sentence, no need to put periods down while your thoughts are streaming.
