The SL segment is online though - yay!
It was great to meet Paul in person in-world. A gathering of eager avatars surrounded him in his spanking new 512 in Monema and spent some of the time talking to him as well as to each other ![]() He found it really hard to leave - I estimate half an hour between him saying goodnight the first time and the last. I took a copy of the chat log but I'm not sure how it could be presented to anyone who wasn't there - it being against the TOS and everything. Anyway I'll try to summarise tomorrow when I've had some sleep. Paul is a really nice chap, by the way. Hooray for the BBC! _____________________

Am I wrong in thinking the SL population on the front page has gone up about 1.5k since the program?

I got in touch with Cory Edo - real name Sara Van Gorden - who runs a business in Second Life designing avatars - the idealised 3D personas that people use as their online identities. EDIT: Frans, those were my first two really good av skins. I didn't know I made them either until they were done ![]() Haha, leave it to the press to put a spin on things. *watching the show now* edit: Oh damm that was wednesday's episode. Should have stayed up and watched it live. x.x _____________________

I just watched the Newsnight video segment (for those who still have trouble finding it, just open the BBC article then click on the video link below the screenshot: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/4583924.stm ). It's 15 minutes long, about online worlds in general but spends more time on SL than other games.
I loved it. It's both entertaining and informative. And I wouldn't be surprised if it led to people trying out SL as a result. Wendel |

Haha, leave it to the press to put a spin on things. Yeah, I noticed that too, but that's ok. I make stuff, its all good. I was kinda bummed that Mak's contributions didn't show up in the interview, but scripters never seem to get their due. <3 scripters. Also, thanks to Ice Brodie for forwarding me the video of the inworld segment. I tried converting it to Quicktime but it seems like it got really choppy so I'll try it again later when I'm not running SL at the same time. I'll host it on the Tiny Seadog site for anyone that missed it. And thanks to everyone that stopped by last night to hang out with Paul Mason - lots of really good discussions on the past and future of technology, the ins and outs of SL, and general bedlam - including a military infiltration running DNA testing on Paul, a Torse with a slice of watermelon on her horn, and fake weather reports from behind the Newsnight desk. ![]() The best part of all: we actually had a brand new player that joined because of the Newsnight report find us! Got through orientation, hit Find, looked up Paul Mason, and teleported to the location listed in his Picks. We dubbed him the winner of Second Life. _____________________

That was a great piece. I love the BBC. I wish US tv news would do in-depth stories like that. Great job, Cory and Makaio!

Wait for a player to kill another player in RL, or for someone to get nailed for stalking underage in the Teen grid. Then you'll get US coverage. Afterthought: No, NPR does not count as 'mainstream' coverage. |

Finally saw the video. Interesting.
Basically saying that a) virtual/fantasy worlds aren't a joke, and are a booming business, b) can potentially influence us the way movies and television have over the last century and c) it cannot be stopped. It was pretty interesting. I'd like to see that Sacremento bioterrorism build. |

It was pretty interesting. I'd like to see that Sacremento bioterrorism build. So would I, actually. I wonder if they would organise tours and explain the kind of simulations they run there. That would be something different to do in SL. ![]() Wendel |

OK two last updates for everyone:
I tried and tried to convert this file into a Quicktime movie, but it gets really really choppy and messed up, so feel free to download it in all its .mpg glory here: www.tinyseadog.com/newsnightstudioonly.mpg This is only the SL studio part. If anyone successfully manages to get this converted to Quicktime, can you drop me a line? (Thanks again to Ice Brody and her friend who's name I can't remember for the hookup on this!) And lastly, Paul put up a followup piece on the BBC website, "Newsnight's Avatar Party", here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/4588618.stm Check the pictures out, you too may be famous! _____________________

Cory, I'd recommend trying virtualdub to convert the movie to the format of your choice. It works great and reads and writes just about everything except wmv.

Ok, I've just read the follow up peice to this artical, Now I may have pointed out that the peice in question Focused more on the Sex and Gambling side of the sim but I would not of called myself Irate. Guess its just the media hearing what they want again. To put things straight I did Enjoy the article but felt it didnt show Second life in its best light, Sure we all know that in British time there is very little else to do than Gamble and go to the strip joints, But there are alot more things in 2nd life than that. I myself enjoy some very very good partys at T1 Radio, The Barney Stone and The Silver Dollar saloon. I have made some very good mates, and manage to enjoy myself without visiting Gambling joints and Strip Bars Too much.
Just my 2 pounds worth. |

Well, I dunno, I seem to find things to do. Actually, it's okay being online earlier than everyone else, at least you can get some scripting and building done in peace.

Being a brit who regularly stays up until stupid hours one thing I've found is how much smoother SL runs during the times most people here would be up.
