Ahem.

you are all wrong. this debate is pointless.

SL ended as we know it back in november of 03. everything since then has been some wierd incorrect and unknowable mish mash of events.

that is all.

The End of Second Life - reprise
07-11-2006 10:57
To paraphrase some apporpriate quotes:

"There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly [what the fate of Second Life will be and why it is the way it is], it will instantly be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened, which in general has upset a large number of people."

And
"administering [Second Life] is the art of listening to people complain about a problem, finding the source of the problem, misdiagnosing it, and then misapplying the wrong solutions."

And
"in the final analysis it is the enthusiasts, the game players, the ones who embrace the faults and virtues togther in life that are the most richly rewarded. Those critics, naysayers, jaded idealists and cynicists who spend their dear hours decrying the state of things while not lifting a finger to either change or enjoy what is abundantly offered die slow painful and bitter deaths throughout their lives. They fail utterly their mandate to truly live by slowly poisoning the very well of experience from which they must drink."

Honestly folks - isn't this really kinda fun? *grin*

Unless you have some way of making money, there's very little left to do, especially if you don't like clubbing.

If there's so little "left to do" I'm curious as to what you did before that you can't do now? I could run down the list of things I did in 2003 and I certainly can do them all now.

Just because Linden Lab has enabled commerce and RMT to prosper on the grid does not mean creativity has been stifled. Linden Lab has provided a platform that is many things to many people. It's what you make it and always has been. It really is about YOUR imagination, not theirs.

Look, I'm the first person to admit I get bored easily. I recall fondly my first few months in SL -- I was addicted and couldn't wait to get in-world to see friends, build things, etc. Eventually, as happens with all things, the newness wore off. I'd been there and done that. I started spending more time in Photoshop creating clothing then actually existing in-world. Certain projects would get me back in-world and excited again. Sometimes it was new features. Sometimes it was to hang out with old friends.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the feeling a lot of people are torn: They don't want to leave the community and friends and leave the thing they loved so dearly, yet they're having trouble recapturing that initial excitement and finding something new and interesting to do. To those people I can only say: it's your choice. You can move on or take a hiatus from SL. Or you can try to find and interesting project to work on or meet some new people. But one of the last things you can do, in this case, is blame Linden Lab for not entertaining you.

And, hey, I'm not an LL apologist. My list of gripes with the Second Life client and decisions LL makes regarding the world (verification issues being the latest) is a long list. But saying "there's little left to do" and blaming Linden Lab just isn't fair.

The Vision

Although being a noob I just have to get my thoughts in this.

Firstly to those who claim that because of open reg newcomers are not paying to play anymore. I upgraded my tier the first day and if I did it then there's bound to be other noobs doing the same.

Now to the main point. or points. SL really is not a game. I saw that my first day ingame. In my opinion SL is a vision of the future. Or a part of the future. And because of that Sl will not be a perfect world free of bugs and whatnot. When something brand new is put out that no one has ever done before it will not be perfect. Its an ongoing learning process for everybody including the Lindens. So in my opinion it is not right to hold Linden Lab responsible because of frequent bug fixes and patches and the like. They are experimenting and learning just like everybody else.

Also the real world is built by people who had vision. Not very many people have the ability to see the future and those who do sometimes get ridiculed alot. For instance if you were to somehow go back to the year 1799 and explain to someone from that time about a box in which you can watch images on or a little device as small as your hand that you can talk through to someone who's a good two days ride on a horse from you, that person would have looked at you like you were insane. Another example although I'll probably hear alot of flak for this, Bill Gates, like him or not the man had vision. While other companies and people were building computers Gates set his sights on software because he realized that "without a program it's just an empty box". And look where he is now.

And now here comes another man with vision. Philip Rosedale. A man trying to bring the future closer to the present. And if he fails? Then he fails and someone else will come along and take what he has already done and add on to it to make it better. But at least the attempt was made and you can never regret not doing something if you at least make an attempt. And in my humble opinion one learns more from ones mistakes then successes. And that concludes thoughts and opinions from a noob and a great big hand to Linden Lab for their hard work and dedication to the future.

To many take for granted the complexities of an online infinitely customizable world such as SL.. hell I know NOTHING about how it works.. but I can appreciate that its highly complex and that bugs are the norm when working with such complexities.. Stop fucking moaning for CHRISTS sake!

If you cant stand the bugs that much then go away! stop cluttering up the forums with your bloody moaning and go make your own bug free online world with your own PERFECT vision.. this isnt to anyone in particular, just the people who seem to think they know better than LL in how to run such an online world.

This stupid 'vision' is why SL is failing. It is entirely unrealistic, totally unnecessary, and will never happen because the technology is not available, neither is the need.

Lewis

Remember, the Head of IBM said Realisticly, the worldwide need for computers Would be around Six of them, and Bill Gates once said 32Meg would be enough Memory for ANYBODY's home computing needs.

So Lewis, you are in Good company.
Wrong, but in Good company.

Visions, like their creators grow, and Change, because User Demand and technological Innovation ALSO grow and Change. What seemed completely unrealistic even ten years ago is OLD technology today. Running about saying it's the End, because you can't see possible innovations or requirements simply makes no sense. SL WILL continue to Evolve, and the Players (For the most part) can adapt along with it. Far from the End, SL is still just beginning.

Amen to that! When SL became a place to make money instead of a place to be creative, alot of it went down hill..

From: Lewis Nerd

The over emphasis on the commercialism of SL is why we have so many problems, and why so many people get bored and leave (hence the vast turnover of accounts but hardly any increase in in-world numbers).

The reason so much of the grid is underdeveloped and an ugly mess? Emphasis on commercialism instead of creativity.

The reason the value of the L$ crashed? Emphasis on commercialism instead of creativity.

The reason people don't stay? Emphasis on commercialism instead of creativity.

The reason people don't bother to pay to go premium? Emphasis on commercialism instead of creativity.

The reason that SL is not profitable? Emphasis on commercialism instead of creativity.

Lewis

Edit: Forgot to cut out the parts I dont agree with :)
