The big problem with SL scalability has been the asset server which handles textures, inventory, and such. Somewhere around the time where the active population regularly exceeded 1000, the asset server began to become overloaded and LL added secondary caches to each sim to try to distribute the hits on the central server.

Maybe if the client caching code was working correctly, there wouldn't be so many people fetching from the asset server. :)

This jibes with my memory of things. People have been mocked for suggesting going back to a previous version to the point where I have been afraid to say that. Are you saying it wrong with 1.6 or that 1.6 the last one that worked ok? (Note that I am not suggesting reverting to a previous version)

I'm trying to remember exactly when it started really misbehaving. I don't remember exactly. I stand by saying that its pretty much impossible to go "backwards" in SL... unless you want to destroy a lot of content created in the meantime!

Coco: I still would take SL 1.8 over previous versions without a doubt. Its a much better system than 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6... but still, yes, there is work to be done. The initial issues from the start of 1.7 were resolved. These are clearly different issues; the client seems to think the texture has been sent and is loaded, when it hasn't. The previous problem was with overload, IIRC. But a Linden would have to speak to that directly.

As you'll see in another thread I've started, I do have suggestions on improving both the performance and the functionality of the cache. Its long overdue for an upgrade due to the size of the world and the population to take some heat off the servers, especially with the 2.0 renderer coming (some day). I'd also like to see options for some end user control over the cache! :D
