How many of us are content makers?

Something Eggy posted:

"5% make it, 100% enjoy it". According to Eggy, it was a slogan for SL back in 2001. I wonder if that's still accurate. I see so many people creating content. Is 5% still accurate? I'm surrounded by content creators so maybe I just need to get out more but it seems to me 5% is too low now.

Anyone have any guesstimates? Or stats? Hypothesisesseses?

Depends whether we qualify it with a decision on quality or not :/

Used to be omg yes. Recently, hell no, there is no incentive to build anything coming from the lab.

I guess it might make more sense to split up the percentage between Private and Commercial content creators. By private, I mean someone who builds their own house and stuffs, but does not make those items available for sale. My guess is that percentage is probably relatively low. Its hard to gage how high the commercial content percentage would be. In any case, I suck at math so the chances of me figuring out the percentage are slim to slimmer.

Numbers schmumbers.

I think the numbers are less now, if you mean quality content. Mebbe 2-3%

WOW! ingrid, if that *is* accurate then the odds really fall in the favor of the businesses, with so much of the grid populated buy mostly consumers!

I think the numbers in the forums are probably skewed, I think the in-world numbers are depressed from that quote. However, I still wander the world and see a lot of people out there trying their best to sell their creations in the darnedest places.

As for 'quality' content and using that to discount some percentage -- that's a subjective thing. I make what I consider a high-quality home with my Normandy prefab, but sales numbers don't reflect that. There are people who make houses that make me want to claw my eyes out and they keep growing and expanding, affording private islands, etc, because someone thinks it's quality. If you make content and offer it for sale, that's content, regardless of 'quality'.

I was thinking this myself.

Also depends on your definition of content. I am not a builder or a photoshopper, tho I have made a few things - mostly to be given away as freebies...But I create connections and also events that are different...I think that counts for something.

More events that are different to come too!

I've never been very good as a content creator. I've never sold stuff, but I have done some builds and created objects and scripts for the fun of it. In the long run I seem to be more effective as a malcontent creator.

I think the ratio there is higher than 5%.

Yes, Ingrid. Once upon a time, Robin Linden kindly forwarded to me something they accidentally uncovered: The oldest script in existance, which was a slideshow made in December 2001, for the DEMO conference.

http://history.secondserver.net/index.php/LSL1

The script was made in an ancient version of LSL that no longer runs in the modern simulators, but as it turned out, the UUIDs hardcoded into the script still worked, so we got it converted to the current LSL version and this is what came out:

Interesting question. Maybe it's time to take a census of all the serious content creators in Second Life. Once you have that number it's simple math to find the percentage. \

With 200,000 registered users, 10,000 of them would have to be content creators to reach 5% (alts aside). That seems REALLY high.

The amount of "active" accounts (Khamon's grumpiness notwithstanding) is about 60,000 or so.

5% of that is 3,000 content creators. Seems a bit low to me.

Let's assume 10% nowdays. So 6,000.

Sturgeons Law dictates that 90% of everything is crap; SL is Sturgeon's Law writ large.

So, about 600 people are worth sneezing at when it comes to the content creation engine.

The rest of us continue to make crap :)

That is interesting. Textures are really important to people, moreso than I thought.

Amen!

I remember ReallyRick Metro had (or has) in his signature saying he's a content creater and his content is smiling, or spreading happiness or something along those lines.

I do believe when LL carries on about "content creators" they for sure mean those that make physical objects and/or those that create physical builds and so forth.

I really wish they'd stretch their vision to include those of us who provide content in other ways. You know, like teaching classes, giving tours, throwing interesting events, streaking naked through the WA to give the Noobs a thrill and so on

But seriously - I mean it!

This is a good point, and something that i thought about after posting. I'm pretty sure LL considers all of that as being equal to, or even more important in some respects than the stuff that's made. Or I would anyways. As the world gets bigger and more new players show up, their "experience" in SL is going to really matter. It already does. I try to make a point of venturing to Waterhead a few times a week to meet new people and either explain a few things or show them some places, or stuff.

As a resdident who's primary interest in SL is making stuff, my question was leaning more towards wondering wbout how many people make and share scripts and things that are built or photoshopped. I see so many people tinkering in the sandboxes with things. 5% just seemed like such a low number to me.

I see event hosts as content creators myself. I do both events and building.

Sounds like you are describing Services. It would certainly interesting to know the number of users providing services and content.
