*rant*
What is up with people posting the same event for the same time 5 times in a row? Please people check your event before reposting it!
It's frustrating enough looking at the events list without having to wade thru 5 listings (in a row) for the same event.
Is there going to be any policing of the events list?
*end rant*
Thanks for listening

From: someone Is there going to be any policing of the events list? They tried policing the event list one afternoon but I think they found it boring so they stopped. I don't expect that's likely to change unless they start charging for listings which has been proposed a number of times but has as many good reasons for as against so it isn't likely to change. Just think of it a useful service like Google, if Google allowed you to put your site at the top of the list if only you pressed a button more vigorously than anyone else, that is.

Since spamming the events calendar continues to be an ongoing problem and the community isn't willing to follow the very explicit Events Posting Rules, we have no choice but to consider charging for listings and further enforcing disciplinary action. If you would like to see event postings remain free I would suggest reminding your fellow Residents that the calendar is not meant as a way to avoid paying for Classified ad space.

Honestly? Don't wait. The Event Listings are (at least) as broken as Dwell or Developer Incentives. Time to kill 'em. Because appealing to the better nature of system cheats has worked so well to date.

BassAckward, BassAckward!! Why should I be charged for posting a true event? Why not fine the offenders? Charge them for the cost of a classified listing, and then something for your trouble. Also a fan of 3 strikes and you're out.

Thank you for responding and for sending me an in game message Torley! I know this is an ongoing problem but between wading thru the "endless yard sale listings" and the "multiple listings for the same events" it gets so frustrating. I use the events listing to go to *gasp* events.
Heck I've been known to hold events of my own, It's unfortunate to think that legitimate events would then pay the price by being charged a fee, even if it is a nominal one.
But seriously I'd be willing to volunteer to police the events. Not that I think I'm more qualified than anyone else, but I am able to read and interpret the event rules.
Perhaps moving the offenders automatically to classified which would make them automatically incur the proper fee would cause them rethink the error of their ways ? I also like the 3 strikes rule !
I haven't given up hope yet.

Hold on a second here! You're suggesting penalizing ME because I can follow the simple guidlines listed for posting events? Utter bullshit... In the absence of allowing some of the existing volunteers to police this, it is squarely LLs job to do it. And no, that doesn't include the easy way out of charging those who follow the rules. Get some staff and start doing your jobs. Three strikes works fine for me - Warn, Suspend, Ban. The rules are simple enough that any protracted disciplinary scheme is unneccessary. Frankly, I could live with Suspend and Ban. The warning is on the web page when you agree to the posting rules. And going back to the volunteer groups, you really need to consider expanding their roles to include some of this policing. Other games do it successfully. Oh, there will be a hue and cry over favoritism, blah, blah, blah. It will be, however, FAR easier to police an occasional rogue volunteer than it has already proven to be policing the army of idiots who cannot follow the simple posting rules.

Just in case people don't know what the event rules are:
Please read and agree to these event posting rules before posting an event. Be sure to click the "I Agree" button below to continue.
PLEASE NOTE: Advertisements for commercial products or services will be deleted from the events calendar. Repeated misuse of the event posting system for this purpose may lead to disciplinary action against the poster's account. See more details on this policy below.
You may currently post up to 5 events per day (including event edits). In addition, your friends will now be able to post events on a parcel that you own. However, you must set that parcel to show up in Find Places as a Gathering Place. If your parcel is not set up as a Gathering Place, the parcel will not be available to your friends, but will continue to be subject to other availability rules.
To further clarify, you may post an event on a parcel if:
* You personally own the parcel and is at least 512 square meters in size. * The parcel is owned by a group that you are a member of, and is at least 512 square meters. * The parcel is in a private island that you are on the access list of, and is at least 512 square meters. * The parcel belongs to Governor Linden and is set to show in Find Places as a Gathering Place. * The parcel belongs to a friend, it is set to show in Find Places as a Gathering Place, and is at least 512 square meters.
An event is defined as a special group activity that is led by a host on land owned either by the host or by a group the host belongs to. Examples include discussions, group meetings, hosted dances, classes, tours, and competitions.
An event is framed by a beginning and an end time. Thus '24hr Sales' and 'Non-Stop Casinos' are not events.
The 'Commercial' category was created for the purpose of grand openings, demonstrations, product launches etc. Each of these types of events should have a clear beginning and end time attached. Otherwise, they belong in the Second Life Classifieds, not the Events calendar. Posting events that are simply advertisements will not be acceptable.
The use of alts to post more than 5 events per day will not be permitted either.
The event descriptions need to conform to PG guidelines, consistent with the overall Second Life website policy - so no overt sex descriptions; sex for money, sex chat, simulated sex, strong violence, or anything else broadly offensive.
Mature events must be listed as Mature, and held in M-rated sims.
Respect the work of others -- respect copyrights and trademarks! Event hosts are responsible for making sure that all applicable rights and permissions are in order. See Digital Millennium Copyright Act for more information about Copyrights and Second Life.
By selecting the "I Agree" button, you agree to these rules for posting events to the Second Life event calendar.
Sometimes I wonder if anyone even reads this before they click agree

It's begun!!! Have a look for yeself:The emphasis is, rather, on social awareness--that those who are doing the RIGHT thing will help make each other aware of this, and call out--e.g. abuse report--the egregious Event calendar spammers and non-event posters. We simply hope that a few bad watermelons won't ruin the patch, so to speak. And did I hear "3 strikes"? I did. While at this time we can't simply turn off "event posting privileges" for a serial offender, we can increase the regular disciplinary severity--as it extends to inworld--each time in hopes they will get the message, consistent as is done for other violations of our Community Standards. Positive action on the part of those who benefit the community with actual events--as defined by the Event Posting Rules--will save us from a bleak dystopian future! *huggles*

YES!
Now, does this effect those of us who host regular *ingo events? (ok, it probably doesn't, but I'd like to be sure of this)

The Story Of Torse Jr. And The Events Listing
05-05-2006 19:26
THE STORY OF TORSE JR. AND THE EVENTS LISTING
Once upon a time, Torse the Horse Jr. was a happy pony. He was content to attend events--even though trivia was a challenge for him to type out the answers.
But then, the skies darkened, and the Events calendar became bogged down NON-events and spam. Redudant postings of the same event in a single day, gratuitious and blatant ads, and fake yard sales--"fake" because there wasn't a host present, there was no start or end time, and there most certainly wasn't even a yard to begin with... so how could it be a yard sale?
The last one saddened Torse Jr. deeply, as he used to enjoy yard sales. Meanwhile, Residents drowned in the Events calendar, the world continued to grow, and pending better ways to find events in the future, what can we do now?
Today, if you see Torse Jr. at an event, it's an omen: this tiny cyborg pony has plenty o' might and randomly visits listings to check them out... to see firsthand if they're really events. And if not, Torse Jr. neighs for help from his Linden companions. And then the NON-events get deleted, and discipline gets doled out. *chomps at the bit*
You can help us help you so that your actual events, which you put a lot of passion into for the enjoyment of all involved, aren't drowned! See a listing which is not an event and thus doesn't meet the Event Posting Rules? From inworld, please use the HELP menu ---> REPORT ABUSE with all the juicy details, including who posted it, the date, time, and description of the NON-event, and also important: if this has been going on awhile and hasn't stopped.
And into the sunset, Torse Jr. galloped on, wishing the Residents happy, healthy, and truely eventful Second Lives!

One problem I am seeing with something diff., is with automated games with noone present. That, of course, is not in accordance with the rules.

OK...i realize that the event postings are OUT OF CONTROL...i do have to say 1 thing... ) i have hosted MANY events in SL, and MANY times, when i do, for some reason while posting, i crash so when i get back in SL, i see no event, so repost the said event, then WOAH there are 3 or 4 postings, so, MAYBE it's not always said event host posting the same event over and over

Or, should this fail, a Linden Liaison should be contacted for assistance to delete the events. A bug report should also be sent in from HELP menu ---> REPORT BUG inworld in case it's reproducible. ^^ Also, refreshing the Events webpage several minutes later should verify whether it appears.
